Tale Of The 1989 Tape: How Ryan Adams’s Covers Compare To Taylor Swift’s Originals

· September 21, 2015 ·

Despite only being announced six weeks ago, Ryan Adams’s 1989–a track-by-track cover of last year’s Taylor Swift album of the same name–quickly shot up to the top of the “most anticipated albums, Fall 2015 edition” list. Taking the poppy, dancy, electronic-influenced chart-topper from Swift and having alt-country balladeer Adams reinterpret it seems like a weird move, until you remember two things. advertisement advertisement First, Swift herself got her start writing offbeat country songs, even if she’s a million miles away from that now. And secondly, Adams is a big-time musical weirdo whose singer-songwriter material is balanced out with , a punk rock album released under the band name “The Finger,” and a full, track-by-track cover of The Strokes’ debut album Is This It that was never released. Swift herself was elated by the announcement–she swore that she’d celebrate the day she learned of it as a … [Read more...] about Tale Of The 1989 Tape: How Ryan Adams’s Covers Compare To Taylor Swift’s Originals

George Michael And The End Of My Century

· December 27, 2016 ·

I remember exactly where I was when I first saw the video for “Freedom! ’90,” the smash single from George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1. I was 10 years old, crouched in front of the family television with my finger on the box so I could switch the channel from MTV to PBS if my mom or dad walked into the room. My parents never censored what I read or watched, but if you’ve seen the video, you may understand why I felt a bit shy. In Michael’s gorgeous fuck-you anthem to his past and the media, supermodels Linda Evangelista and Christy Turlington lip sync and pose; a steam-slicked Cindy Crawford writhes in a bathtub. Naomi Campbell, of course, makes the best entrance as she spins and dances to her headphones in the manner of some uncatchable sex priestess. Like many of you, I so badly wanted to be one of them. advertisement advertisement The “Freedom! ’90” video was a wry and successful attempt to call out the … [Read more...] about George Michael And The End Of My Century

20 Moments From The Past 20 Years That Moved The Whole World Forward

· November 16, 2015 ·

Do you remember the day when Netscape became a $2 billion company, or when Amazon upended our online expectations by introducing 1-Click shopping? How about when Napster faced down Metallica and Twitter showed us what was really happening on the streets of Tehran? These are the moments of innovation that changed our world and continue to point us to the future. advertisement advertisement 1995: The birth of the fast company It was the IPO pop heard round the world: How Netscape’s triumph signaled the arrival of a new business model—and a new mind-set. I first realized that August 9, 1995, would be a day to remember when two coworkers bet each other on the opening and closing price of a new stock issue from a Mountain View, California–based company called Netscape Communications. Their excitement was electric, and it only grew as the stock doubled its offering price from $14 to $28 that morning; by the time it started trading after 11 a.m., the stock had … [Read more...] about 20 Moments From The Past 20 Years That Moved The Whole World Forward

Today In Tabs: Riddle Me This

· December 14, 2015 ·

https://t.co/iOxmH1WGHt adding the word “Open” to make a fucked up thing squishy and non-threatening is so 2012 — Ingrid Burrington (@lifewinning) December 14, 2015 In his ongoing effort to develop a more lifelike personality module, beloved Star Wars character Elon Musk, his droid sidekick Sama-2Polo, and their ragtag band of messianic libertarian billionaires have founded OpenAI, which would be easier to dismiss as the sci-fi hobby of a bunch of overprivileged net.boyz were it not for the distinct sensation that it’s only a couple more years until “waiting for the Singularity” becomes “making the Singularity happen whether you like it or not.” The group of supervillains have pledged a billion dollars to the cause, because it is the smallest number of dollars they are able to count. advertisement advertisement It’s the week before Christmas Eve Day Week and frankly either nothing much is going on or I just can’t … [Read more...] about Today In Tabs: Riddle Me This
