So far, more than 100 people have tested negative for Covid-19 after a 57 year old French/Thai woman tested positive for the virus in Koh Samui. Her case is the first on the island in 7 months and health officials are investigating to determine if she came in contact with the virus on the island, when travelling from France or possibly while in quarantine at an ASQ hotel in Samut Prakan, just southeast of Bangkok. The woman, born in Thailand, was repatriating back to Thailand with her family. She has dual citizenship. Meanwhile, 30 people are considered to be at “high risk” of contracting the virus. The Koh Samui Hospital director Veerasak Lorthongkum says those people, including her husband and son, as well as people seated close to her onboard a flight, show no signs of infection. A Chiang Rai activist will now spend the next 28 years behind bars after being charged with royal defamation. Mongkol Tirakote, an activist and online clothing vendor was charged with two separate royal defamation cases after posting defamatory comments online. According to The Hindu , the kingdom’s lese-majeste laws are among the harshest in the world with rights groups saying they are used to suppress public debate. Royal defamation convictions can carry a jail term of up to 15 years per charge. The 29-year-old’s prison sentence was originally 42 years but the court reduced it following his testimony, according to his lawyer. Human Rights Watch senior researcher, Sunai Phasuk, says the 28-year sentence is the second-highest handed down by a Thai court. The highest jail term sentenced over a royal defamation case came in 2021 when a Thai court handed down a 43-year jail term to a woman after she was found guilty of insulting the monarchy. State governments adopting the so-called old pension scheme may end up curbing current expenditure as they build up liabilities for the future, according to Raghuram Rajan, the former governor of the Reserve Bank of India. “I think the reason we moved to the new pension scheme was because in the old pension scheme there were huge liabilities that built up. It is important to remember that defined benefit schemes typically are easier for government to take on because you are not recognizing the liabilities,” Rajan told Moneycontrol in an interview at Davos 2023 . The Congress party had promised to take a decision to restore Old Pension Scheme (OPS) at the first meeting of the government and it stood by the promise.  The Cabinet also decided to adopt the Election Manifesto of the Congress party as policy document of the Government.
