The veteran value investor’s flagship Ariel Fund was up 14% in January after taking a hit in 2022. Now he is betting big on entertainment, private equity and — surprise! — housing. In an era when dyed-in-the wool value investing strategists have been pushed aside for sexier growth and quantitative managers, John W. Rogers Jr.’s patient contrarian approach has proven resilient in the aftermath of multiple market storms. Rogers, the founder and co-CEO of Ariel Investments, started the firm in 1983 just three years after graduating from Princeton. Forty years later, the oldest Black-owned investment firm in the U.S. manages more than $16 billion in assets. Most of that is in mutual funds and separately managed accounts, though $1.45 billion is in a new private equity fund dubbed Project Black. Mongkol Tirakote, an activist and online clothing vendor was charged with two separate royal defamation cases after posting defamatory comments online. According to The Hindu , the kingdom’s lese-majeste laws are among the harshest in the world with rights groups saying they are used to suppress public debate. A Beginner’s Mind: Ocasio-Cortez’s Key To Cracking A Political Victory
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few,” writes Shunryu Suzuki in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind . This idea is anathema to most politicians, for whom the very idea that a 28-year-old woman from a minority with no political experience could beat out a well-funded, high-ranking politician with legitimate aspirations to become Speaker of the House was outrageous. Until this past Tuesday, that is. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez beat out the Democratic incumbent Joseph Crowley in a defeat few saw coming. As the 28-year-old challenger who was outspent 18-1, she enjoyed a crushing victory over the long-time incumbent who was twice her age, with 57% of the vote. In a sense, age was also a real protagonist in this election. Ocasio-Cortez demonstrated that age does not have to define — or limit rather — what you can accomplish. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the winner of a … [Read more...] about A Beginner’s Mind: Ocasio-Cortez’s Key To Cracking A Political Victory

Kentucky Bourbon Trail 2.0: Louisville Positions Itself At The Center Of American Spirits
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Copper Pot Stills At Woodford Reserve Brad Japhe In 1996, Woodford Reserve opened a visitor's center as part of its bourbon distillery. The low-key operation amidst the horse farms of Versailles, Kentucky, offered souvenirs, specialty bottles, and daily tours of the whiskey-making process. While that might not seem like anything special now, back then it was nothing short of revolutionary; booze-tourism simply didn't exist at the time. "The success of that decision led other distilleries to follow our lead," says Chris Poynter, brand spokesman. "T oday the Kentucky Bourbon Trail gets more than 1 million visitors annually, and growing. This combining of tourism and bourbon -- which we call bourbonism -- has been great for our distillery and the state of Kentucky.” While most of these outsized operations exist along the rural edges of Bluegrass Country, a new wave of liquid is swelling up inside the big … [Read more...] about Kentucky Bourbon Trail 2.0: Louisville Positions Itself At The Center Of American Spirits
Sania Mirza: A trailblazer like none other
Sania Mirza became the first Indian woman to win a WTA singles title in 2005. In 2009, she became the first Indian woman to win a Grand Slam - playing mixed doubles in the Australian Open with Mahesh Bhupathi that year. (Image source: Instagram/mirzasaniar) Luisa Stefani had been waiting near the net as Sania Mirza returned Rafael Matos’ shot from the baseline. Her smash was too close for Rohan Bopanna to return. This course of action would have been routine – but for the fact that it brought the curtains on one of the most illustrious careers in Indian tennis. Sania Mirza will no longer play in Grand Slams . The world knew that before the Australian Open began, but as one opposition fell after another – Jaimee Fourlis and Luke Saville, then Makoto Ninomiya and Ariel Behar, then Jelena Ostapenko and David Vega Hernandez, then Desirae Krawczyk and Neal Skupski – the expectations soared back home. The nation that often cares for little beyond cricket woke up to catch her … [Read more...] about Sania Mirza: A trailblazer like none other
