Comic Tom Segura Books Funny

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The other night Natasha, my adult-ish daughter, asked me to accompany her to a book author event for standup comic and podcaster Tom Segura’s best-selling “ I’d like to Play Alone, Please ” (Grand Central Publishing). It would take me too long to unpack all the dissonance and significance in that first sentence but suffice to say that this was so rare an event in every respect that I eagerly agreed. The evening, hosted by Live Talks LA , and introduced by the ever-gracious Ted Hapte-Graber (whose glorious leonine pandemic-grown mane remains largely untamed) took place in the theater of John Adams Middle School (JAMS) Performing Arts Center in Santa Monica which is an 800-seat state-of-the-art venue as good as any performance space on the Westside of LA (my tax dollars at work). Segura, who is one the most successful comics on the standup performance circuit, and who has four comedy specials on Netflix, the most … [Read more...] about Comic Tom Segura Books Funny

Trump Asked Generals To Follow In Third Reich’s Footsteps, Book Says

August 8, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Donald Trump pleaded during his presidency for U.S. generals to act more like Nazi generals under Adolf Hitler, according to an excerpt from a forthcoming book published Monday morning in the New Yorker , a jarring comment demonstrating a particularly distorted view of history. Key Facts “You f*cking generals, why can’t you be like the German generals…in World War II?,” Trump told his then chief of staff John Kelly while still in office, according to the book The Divider: Trump in the White House by New York Times journalist Peter Baker and New Yorker journalist Susan Glasser set for release next month. Trump’s complaint came due to the military officials’ perceived lack of loyalty to him, according to the report, and Trump admired that Hitler’s generals were “totally loyal to him,” he reportedly told Kelly. Aside from the horrors committed by the Nazi regime he spoke favorably about, … [Read more...] about Trump Asked Generals To Follow In Third Reich’s Footsteps, Book Says

How to take risks at work when you feel burned out

August 7, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Have you ever felt pulled in too many directions? Have you ever felt that those in your professional life were being demanding or that no matter what you did your manager wasn’t satisfied? Have you ever felt that despite your best efforts, you weren’t doing enough? Most of us have been there, and most of us at some point have been told that the solution is “better balance.” advertisement advertisement As a speaker on gender-related issues, I frequently get asked to discuss work-life balance. However, I respectfully decline this topic in favor of a more realistic and empowering approach to “time and energy optimization.” While balance is an elusive ideal at best, it also misses an essential point. Instead of imagining a scale with two sides that we’re trying to balance, we would be better off imagining a wallet with a limited number of dollars. We have a choice of where to invest those dollars—our time—and we want to invest them in the activities and … [Read more...] about How to take risks at work when you feel burned out

Patagonia CEO was right to call out corporate hypocrisy on climate change

August 6, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

As the climate, tax, and healthcare package now known as the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 has made its way closer to passage than at any time previously thought possible in its 18-month existence, both the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable—a group of almost 200 CEOs from companies such as Apple, Walmart, and GM who back in 2019 pledged to address societal concerns alongside shareholder interests—have voiced opposition to it. advertisement advertisement The bill, though significantly pared back from previous iterations, still includes hundreds of billions in funding for climate and energy programs, making it a historic investment in addressing climate change. In response, Patagonia CEO Ryan Gellert asked corporate members of those groups to put up or shut up when it comes to climate action. “Many companies that belong to these organizations talk a big game on climate—just look at their websites,” Gellert wrote in a … [Read more...] about Patagonia CEO was right to call out corporate hypocrisy on climate change

Hamilton: How Lin-Manuel Miranda Created A Hit Musical

November 24, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The musical Hamilton was a hit when it first debuted, but it crossed another level after its release on Disney+. While people continue to talk about the play itself, not enough people are talking about the story of how Lin-Manuel Miranda created Hamilton. You see, while Miranda’s story takes place in the world of the arts, it has many takeaways that are just as applicable in the business world. The Story Behind Hamilton Our story starts in 2009. Lin-Manuel Miranda had just read Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton and came up with an idea … for a rap mixtape. He began writing and tinkering on songs, with no plans for a full-blown musical. Shortly after this, Miranda received an invitation from President Barack Obama to perform a song from his first musical In The Heights at a White House poetry event. Lin did what any of us would do — say yes, pack his bags, and head to Washington DC. But … [Read more...] about Hamilton: How Lin-Manuel Miranda Created A Hit Musical

Finally! The Secret To Short, Powerful Meetings!

August 6, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Want to learn the secret to short, powerful meetings finally? It’s not what you think. Terrible meetings are a perennial problem and productivity killer. You know this is true. Unfortunately, most of the advice you read contains rules for controlling the people in the meetings. Agendas with hard time slots. Time keepers. Rules about late arrivals and cell phones. This emphasis on rules perpetuates the myth that the problem with meetings is the behavior of the participants! But participants are not the problem. In 99% of meetings, the problem is a lack of clarity. If you start a meeting without knowing very specifically what must be different when it is done and how you will get there, of course you will waste time ! You won't even know whom to invite to your meeting! And if you bring a bunch of busy people together without a clear purpose, including some with no clue as to why they have been … [Read more...] about Finally! The Secret To Short, Powerful Meetings!

The network’s parent company, NBCUniversal, is believed to be the biggest beneficiary of the show’s astonishing profits. Universal Pictures, its film studio, invested about $10 million in the $14 million musical. “It will go down at the end of the day as one of the more profitable ventures that Universal has ever entered into,” commented one of its lead producers, Marc Platt, in an earlier interview. “If Wicked was a film, then it would be one of the most — if not the most — successful films of all … [Read more...] about NBCUniversal Basks in Own Success with ‘Wicked’ Anniversary Telecast

March 31, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Julie Ball is the founder of Sparkle Hustle Grow , a subscription box for female entrepreneurs and a subscription box business coach. In a culture that glorifies busyness, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype and compete for "the most overwhelmed." However, the only thing waiting at the finish line will be burnout. So how can you recalibrate and design a fulfilling life as an entrepreneur without burning yourself to the ground? Foster these practices to keep hustle culture at bay. 1. Redefine success. When was the last time you thought about what it really meant to be successful? One of the biggest traps in the hustle culture is chasing what others deem “right.” The thing is, going down this route often means going after things that don’t truly matter to you. To center yourself, consider these questions: • What does success look like to you? Not what’s expected from parents or spouses or … [Read more...] about Hustle Culture Can Be Toxic—Here’s How To Navigate It Successfully

Tips To Starting A Business Through Peer-To-Peer Carsharing Apps

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Cami Powell, MBA (Ph.D. 2024), is the Business Development Director at The Self-Employed Journey where she guides businesses toward success. After a few days in Denver, I returned home with one car less than I had the week before. My vehicle that I had left in the high security, long-term Denver parking lot only four weeks prior had been stolen, leaving me scrambling to make new transportation plans hours before a meeting at the college where I'm working on my Ph.D. The plan was to get a rental vehicle. However, the corporate rental car companies had no inventory for a last-minute request. That's when I learned of the emerging market in peer-to-peer car renting. Multiple companies are set up to allow individuals to rent out their vehicles. While I just happened to check out Turo, a few other companies include Getaround, HyreCar and Avail. I was able to rent a vehicle, have it delivered to my hotel and pay a … [Read more...] about Tips To Starting A Business Through Peer-To-Peer Carsharing Apps
