BOGOTA (Reuters) - Colombian leftist guerrilla group the National Liberation Army (ELN) is open to advancing peace talks with the incoming government of President-elect Gustavo Petro, it said on Monday, and called for reforms to tackle social exclusion and inequality. "The ELN remains active in its fight and political and military resistance, but also its disposition to advance in a peace process to further talks which started in Quito in February 2017," the ELN said in a statement. Petro, who takes office on Aug. 7, has pledged to fully implement the 2016 peace deal with the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group and to seek talks with the still-active ELN rebels. The incoming president, a former member of the M-19 guerrilla group, has called for a rapid negotiation with the ELN, and has also suggested applying the 2016 peace deal with the … [Read more...] about Colombia ELN rebel group open to peace talks with next president Gustavo Petro

Pareja, Carcueva road kings
Nichol Pareja and Jonel Carcueva emerged victorious after Friday’s grueling men’s road race of the PhilCycling National Championships that finished in Tagaytay City. Pareja ditched the peloton in a lung-busting 400-meter climb in Agoncillo, before widening the gap at the ascending Sungay Road separating Tagaytay from Talisay City, Batangas, to rule the Elite class of the race. Carcueva, meanwhile, finished first among all the Under-23 riders. “When I saw the opportunity, I didn’t let it slip away,” said Pareja, riding for 7-Eleven Roadbike Philippines, after arriving at Tagaytay’s Praying Hands Monument—where the race also started—in three hours, 19 minutes and 54 seconds. Marcelo Felipe, Pareja’s teammate, wheeled in 14 seconds later for the silver. Philippine Navy-Standard Insurance’s Jhon Mark Camingao crossed the finish a split second behind a tad behind Felipe to complete the podium. Carcueva, riding for Scratch It!, finished fifth overall in the race to rule the Under … [Read more...] about Pareja, Carcueva road kings
Cordillera weavers as visual artists
BRAND STRENGTH Fashion and décor brand Narda’s has exported woven textiles and garments that blended art and utility. —EV ESPIRITU BAGUIO CITY—Imelda Cadaweng, a Baguio-based weaver who hails from Mountain Province, has matched a terra-cotta art piece rendered by Luisa Galang with a woven tapestry that is on display at the University of Baguio. Cadaweng belongs to a group of weavers trying their hands at producing woven art for a project called, “Art Weave,” which features handwoven tapestries that interpret nine paintings being exhibited at this year’s crafts show, “Mandeko Kito” (Ibaloy for ‘Let’s sell’). In a video documentation, Cadaweng admitted being a little apprehensive about producing a companion tapestry for Galang’s piece, which has snake-like terra cotta heads leaping off the canvas. With the help of fellow weaver Leticia Bacolong, Cadaweng’s “translation” was a brown woven textile embossed with cartoon-like brown heads attached to elongated necks. How I beat Wall Street for 103 consecutive months
Wall Street, New York City (File image: Reuters) From 1999 to 2019, I managed money for some of the largest hedge funds in the world ( Millennium, Brevan Howard, ExodusPoint ). During that time, I generated positive returns for 103 consecutive months, which is quite possibly the longest such streak in hedge fund history. This extraordinary feat was made possible by my strict adherence to three key principles. First, I made sure that I had a method that turns the odds in my favour. Second, I had the discipline to stay with that system in good times, and bad times. Finally, it is vital to play with a bankroll that is large enough to ride out market fluctuations. Lose any one of these three things, and it becomes impossible to beat the market for any length of time. Have A System : As a professional gambler who accidently landed on Wall Street way back in 1993, I have always had a keen sense of the odds in any game. I played blackjack because it is the only game where a … [Read more...] about How I beat Wall Street for 103 consecutive months

Testing The New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The E-Class Estate enjoys a bit of a cult following among quite a few friends, including my sister. In its diesel format, and usually at least two decades old, Mercedes-Benz’s grand and grown-up motor car appears to win over its station wagon German rivals — the likes of Audi A6 Avant and BMW 5 Series Touring. These super fans all have young families and lead active lives, so abundant space is a key seller. They also want their cars to fuse function with a touch of old-school class and certainly not be showy. Which is one of the reasons I’m keen to try out the all-new Mercedes E-Class Estate. The other is that I’m drawn to the station wagon aesthetic — the elongated sedan that maintains the elegance, but adds extra function, as in rear and trunk space. The car sent to me is also diesel-powered, albeit a refined engine that passes the stringent new London emissions regulations which forced the above-mentioned friends and … [Read more...] about Testing The New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate
