The 7 Deadly Sins Of Corporate Black History Month Programming

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For many organizations January is a time of renewal—setting goals, welcoming new team members, establishing a fresh start, etc. But unfortunately, January can also trigger anxiety and discomfort for many organizations as they scramble to prepare for what may feel like an obligatory pivot into unfamiliar territory—Black history. As a result, many organizations miss an important opportunity to acknowledge and honor Black history and culture and instead awkwardly stumble through a series of disjointed events that feel like afterthoughts and tragically reinforce the absence of any holistic, sustained commitment to antiracism. If your organization is like many—scrambling to assemble Black History month (BHM) programming in the days, hours, minutes before the month begins—please consider these all too common yet tragic missteps. Sin #1 Waiting until the last minute Companies regularly plan conferences months, even a year, in … [Read more...] about The 7 Deadly Sins Of Corporate Black History Month Programming

8 Black-Owned Wines To Try This Black History Month—And Beyond

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At Michelin-starred Esmé in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood, the 50-strong wine list is as considered as the restaurant’s vibrant food menu—boasting predominantly women and BIPOC producers, in addition to wineries with a philanthropic bent. And it’s mighty refreshing to see: Not nearly enough restaurants put this much thought and intention into their wine lists, mostly preferring to impress diners with volume (picture: leatherbound, bible-thick tomes) or shock (think: near-offensive markups that hover way above the 200–300% industry standard ). But Tia Barrett, Esmé’s exacting beverage director, is having none of that. Her abbreviated wine list conveys a deep sense of adventure, where profitability isn’t always top of mind. Even her own personal consumption isn’t governed by the trends of the day. “ Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Gnarly Wine Zinfande l is my all-time favorite. Brenae Royal is an inspiration as a … [Read more...] about 8 Black-Owned Wines To Try This Black History Month—And Beyond

Psychologists Support Jewish Students After Professor Allegedly Said ‘It’s Not Your Fault You Were Born In Israel’

January 31, 2023 by dailycaller.com

Psychologists Against Antisemitism announced its support of Jewish students that filed a Title VI complaint against George Washington University professor Lara Sheehi after she allegedly told “one Israeli student that it was “not your fault that you were born in Israel,” in a letter posted on Facebook Tuesday. The letter criticized other organizations that had immediately extended support to Sheehi without looking into the details of the situation. “Rather than demonstrate any interest in what your students, our future psychologists, have said about your experience of being treated differently because of your Jewish identity, Dr. Sheehi is portrayed and labeled as the victim,” PAA said. Psychologists Against Antisemitism (PAA) sent a letter Tuesday in support of Jewish students at George Washington University (GWU) after other organizations attempted to delegitimize claims that Professor Lara Sheehi had made antisemitic comments in her class, including telling one Israeli … [Read more...] about Psychologists Support Jewish Students After Professor Allegedly Said ‘It’s Not Your Fault You Were Born In Israel’

Lawmakers Will Renew Police Reform Push After Tyre Nichols Killing—Here’s Why Negotiations Stalled In The Previous Congress

January 30, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Lawmakers are renewing calls for law enforcement reforms in the wake of the police killing of Tyre Nichols in Memphis, and some Senate Republicans have expressed openness to negotiating, but the legislation faces long odds of passing the GOP-controlled House after attempts at a bipartisan compromise failed more than a year ago. Key Facts Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) said in a statement that he would reintroduce the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act in the coming days after five Memphis officers who were caught on video beating Nichols, 29, were charged with murder. Senate Republicans blocked the legislation–which would make it easier to sue police for misconduct–last year over concerns about its limitations on qualified immunity, which shields individual officers from civil lawsuits over misconduct. Staffers for Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), who helped lead talks on police reform legislation on behalf … [Read more...] about Lawmakers Will Renew Police Reform Push After Tyre Nichols Killing—Here’s Why Negotiations Stalled In The Previous Congress

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Toni is a successful, celebrated executive who has been promoted twice within the past year. Throughout the organization, from board members to contractors and across teams, everyone who meets Toni becomes a big fan. But as engaging as Toni seems to be, there’s a major part of his life that no one at work knows about. Toni has been playing what he calls “the role of normal” so as to not jeopardize his career plans or his reputation within the company. Toni is covering, and he believes that it is for the best, especially based on some of the comments and even jokes he’s heard in certain “off the record” conversations. Toni’s story is an example of what the employee experience can look like when workplace cultures have only shards of a sense of belonging. Belonging has been called a DEI (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion) buzzword lately. And that may be true in some circles, but on a more serious note, it is important to … [Read more...] about 3 Ways To Boost Your Organization’s Culture Of Belonging

I Am America: Tracee Ellis Ross Talks New Podcast Celebrating Community Heroes

January 31, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For as long as America has existed conversations have taken place globally exploring the country’s unique identity. Within these conversations, America is often noted for serving as a melting pot of rich cultures adhering to the ideals of equality, freedom, individualism, and hard work. However, while promoting these values, America’s identity has also been called to question during times when these ideals have been a mere hope for select populations. The need to fight for civil rights, gender and marriage equality, and equal opportunities for those differently abled are prime examples of departures, for some, from these rich ideals. But at America’s core, is the power of everyday people putting humanity first to steer the country closer to the best it has to offer.
