BJP desperate to win Gujarat polls, but anti-incumbency, Congress pose challenges: Analysts
(Representational image; Credit: Reuters) The BJP faces an arduous task of beating an anti-incumbency of over 24 years when it enters the Assembly poll ring in Gujarat and the saffron party is expected to encounter tough challenge from the opposition Congress and the new entrant AAP in its bid for a record-equalling seventh straight term in office, according to political analysts. The BJP has reworked its strategy to retain Gujarat, a party stronghold where polls are due by 2022-end, and if it succeeds in achieving the goal, it will match the record of the Left Front which won seven Assembly elections in a row in West Bengal. The CPI(M)-dominated alliance ruled the eastern state from 1977 to 2011. Gujarat's ruling party, which was reduced to a tally of under-100 (99 seats) out of the total 182 in the 2017 elections for the first time in the six consecutive elections it won since 1995, has taken major steps to fight anti-incumbency like changing the entire government, … [Read more...] about BJP desperate to win Gujarat polls, but anti-incumbency, Congress pose challenges: Analysts

Not a week has gone by when some "jihadi" incident has not happened in the state, he told a press conference. Killers filmed his killing and made the video viral to terrorise the country, he said, calling it a terror attack. Battleground Gujarat | BJP-AAP tussle intensifies as Arvind Kejriwal goes on the offensive
Prime Minister Narendra Modi (right) and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. (File photo) Denied permission to attend a global conference in Singapore, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has decided to head to Gujarat and campaign for his party in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the upcoming assembly elections. Kejriwal had requested Lieutenant Governor (LG) Vinai Kumar Saxena seeking permission to visit Singapore to attend the ‘Eighth World Cities Summit and WCS Mayors Forum’, but the request was turned down arguing that the Delhi government does not have an exclusive domain over the issues to be discussed at the conference, and hence it would inappropriate for him to participate in it. Kejriwal later directly approached the external affairs ministry, and also wrote to the Prime Minister but still didn’t get the political clearance to travel abroad. The tussle between the Delhi government and the LG has escalated … [Read more...] about Battleground Gujarat | BJP-AAP tussle intensifies as Arvind Kejriwal goes on the offensive

Jayant Sinha BJP leader and former minister of state for finance Jayant Sinha on Monday asserted that there is no 'mehngai' (inflation) and the Opposition has been looking for it but is unable to find it. Participating in the debate on price rise in Lok Sabha, Sinha contended that the government has ensured that the "thali" (plate) of the poor is full of eatables and the people are shielded from the impact of inflation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine crisis. Hitting out at opposition parties for doling out freebies, he said, "There are a lot of the 'revadi' people. In Rajasthan also choorma is being made and ghee is being added to it. We have to be careful of those making choorma, sandesh, jalebi, and those reveriwalas who are destroying the country." In a swipe at the Aam Aadmi Party and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, he said, "Delhi people have got a halwaai who keeps making jalebi and he has taken that to Punjab and now since elections are coming, that … [Read more...] about Opposition looking for ‘mehngai’, but it is not there: BJP leader Jayant Sinha
