Book Review: Dana Brown’s Entertaining and Insightful Memoir of Vanity Fair, ‘Dilettante.’

May 18, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Upon return from a family vacation three summers ago, economist Ike Brannon remarked at a subsequent lunch about an individual at the resort who was almost literally covered in tattoos. This was an expensive resort, and Brannon wondered how he and his family were sharing the same pool. To be clear, Brannon’s wonderment about the inked up vacationer wasn’t of the nose-upturned variety; rather he wanted to know what profession afforded so much individuality and disposable income. It turns out his poolmate was a chef. To younger readers, the mention of chef likely elicits a “so what?” response. For those born in the 1970s or earlier, the response is different. We remember . We remember when chef was a “dead end” job for, yes, people with tattoos. They were referred to as cooks then. It’s a long or short way of saying that the economic thinker in Brannon was celebrating a happy truth about prosperity: it elevates all manner of … [Read more...] about Book Review: Dana Brown’s Entertaining and Insightful Memoir of Vanity Fair, ‘Dilettante.’

How the space industry can appeal to Gen Z

May 19, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

The space industry is one of the most future-focused fields, intent, in part, on seeing humankind achieve a robust off-planet existence. Whether it’s settling on Mars, finding more efficient ways to grow food or searching for life beyond Earth, space exploration has captured the minds of young people for decades. But it has been somewhat of a challenge to encourage Gen Z, who are as of this writing about 10 to 25 years of age, to choose aerospace careers as they enter the workforce. advertisement advertisement During their early years, Gen Zers witnessed unprecedented technological transformation. They also saw firsthand the devastating results of global warming and systemic inequality. On track to be the highest-educated generation yet, their unique experiences and skills could revolutionize the way we think about space. Young adults working in the industry have already made clear what needs to happen for Gen Z to embrace the new era of space … [Read more...] about How the space industry can appeal to Gen Z

Why Israel Drew 28 Times More Venture Capital Per Capita Than the U.S.

March 29, 2022 by www.inc.com

Despite the flourishing of work from anywhere during the pandemic , it still matters where a startup is located. That's because, as I wrote in Startup Cities , regions of the world differ in the vitality of their local Startup Commons -- a collection of regional resources that at best provide an irresistible attraction for capital and talent or at worst repel both. This comes to mind in considering the flow of venture capital around the world in 2021. A striking conclusion is that on a per capita basis, capital flows into Israel were a whopping 28 times more than those in the U.S. To be sure, 2021 venture capital flow into the U.S. was way larger than into Israel -- up at 154 percent in 2021 to $330 billion versus 136 percent higher to $25.4 billion, according to NoCamels But Israel's population of about nine million is a fraction of the U.S.'s 330 million people. Hence, Israel's $28,000 in venture capital invested per capita in 2021 is far above the … [Read more...] about Why Israel Drew 28 Times More Venture Capital Per Capita Than the U.S.

USCG Commandant Karl Schultz Finishes Strong, Releasing A New People-Focused Strategy

May 19, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The outgoing Coast Guard Commandant, Admiral Karl L. Schultz , is in the home stretch, cheerfully running from one meeting to the next. Today, just two weeks from retirement, the Admiral is busy preparing for a smooth handoff to the incoming Commandant, the newly confirmed Admiral Linda Fagan, as they both bear down on the “long game” of building a resilient Coast Guard cadre, capable of handling America’s increasingly complex maritime environment. “Nothing has gotten simpler,” quipped Schultz, as he moved piles of documents about his memento-strewn office, reflecting on his 39 years of Coast Guard service. In highlighting how the Coast Guard’s operational environment has changed, the service-tested Commandant cautioned that “the pace of technological change in the maritime has never been faster,” and warned that the “scope and scale” of maritime activity has shifted in ways that may stress the Coast Guard in the future. … [Read more...] about USCG Commandant Karl Schultz Finishes Strong, Releasing A New People-Focused Strategy

Simply put, people just want to be around and be friends with popular people. Clearly being popular has its advantages. So even if you weren't in the popular group in high school, it's not too late to get your popularity mojo on! Here are seven things the truly popular do naturally every day that enables them to continue their successful and happy journey. 1. A US$60 bil crypto collapse reveals a new kind of bank run

May 19, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A NEW YORK (May 19): Last fall, on the advice of a friend, Odosa Iyamuosa invested his life savings of US$4,000 in a cryptocurrency called Luna. The 28-year-old, who lives in Abuja, Nigeria, researched the coin himself online, and what he found seemed promising. Luna’s price was soaring, thanks to the success of another coin with which it was deeply intertwined, TerraUSD. Some of the crypto industry’s biggest names had already invested, including Galaxy Digital Holdings Ltd, the high-frequency-trading firm Jump Trading, and venture investment arms of the exchanges Coinbase Global Inc and Binance. For Iyamuosa, it seemed like his best hope to get out of Abuja, where he says many jobs pay just US$2 a day, or less. He’d scraped together a little money selling knockoff Nike and Adidas sneakers to local buyers he found on Instagram. He wanted to increase his savings to US$16,000 and enroll in a data-analytics programme at a college in Toronto so he could get a job … [Read more...] about A US$60 bil crypto collapse reveals a new kind of bank run

‘The Baby Boomer Dilemma’ Documentary Exposes America’s Failed Retirement Experiment

May 18, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At long last, a full-length documentary film focused upon the greatest financial challenge facing our aging Baby Boomer population today, as well as younger workers: How to fund a secure retirement that may span decades. For some, retirement may last longer than their working years. The Baby Boomer Dilemma, An Expose of American’s Retirement Experiment (PG rated) was released late last year and is currently playing in hundreds of US theaters. The producers of the film are also counting on financial advisers to host licensed free showings of the film in communities across the nation to Boomers for financial literacy purposes. Doug Orchard, the film’s director, recently told me, “I made this movie because I was deeply concerned my own father—a retired CalPERS participant also collecting Social Security—had no idea what’s coming and needed to be prepared. The truth of the matter is that the retirement benefits he and … [Read more...] about ‘The Baby Boomer Dilemma’ Documentary Exposes America’s Failed Retirement Experiment
