Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “I’ve always been attracted to the momentum of institutions,” begins the art historian Tim Marlow. “I like a busy place. I want to bring different audiences and for them to have communal experiences in a shared space.” He clarifies: “This is what museums do best.” As director and chief executive of the Design Museum in London, a position he’s held since 2019, he’s in a prime spot to achieve this. I’m meeting Marlow at the museum west of the city in Kensington, housed in the former Grade II* listed Commonwealth Institute. A curious building with its place in time, it opened in 1962 to inform and educate about the Commonwealth of Nations. The listing notes say its founding came “at a critical moment in the evolution of the modern Commonwealth out of the old Empire.” Meanwhile, the design and displays conveyed a “sense of idealism and a new start.” It, therefore, feels like a fitting place to be occupied by a museum also … [Read more...] about What Is A Design Institution Today? Banking Turmoil, Cost Cuts, Layoffs And More: How To Manage Through The Current Gloom And Doom
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A senior executive texted me a couple hours before writing this article and encapsulated the present angst in corporate America. “How do I resist going to the dark side during these cost-cutting convos?" she asked. It seemed like it had only been a matter of months since her company pivoted from ambitious long-term goals to short-term contraction. Leaders aren’t alone in feeling more than a little disoriented. After an optimistic start to the year, economic headwinds are building once more as inflation remains stubborn at about 6.4%, higher than the 3.3% long-term average. And that doesn’t even consider what’s happening with banks . The turbulence is prompting CEOs to cut jobs and clamp down on other spending. Given the atmosphere, it’s easy to get the wrong message and overcorrect. Yet, the medium-term market outlook still looks good and many CEOs view current business streamlining as necessary to better … [Read more...] about Banking Turmoil, Cost Cuts, Layoffs And More: How To Manage Through The Current Gloom And Doom

Thai Alex Albon scores podium finish in Tuscan Formula One GP
PHOTO: Sky Sports Red Bull will be grateful for the good PR today as British-born, Thai Formula One racer, Alex Albon, thanked the energy drink sponsors for their “faith” after he came third in last night’s incident-prone Tuscan Grand Prix, his first Formula One GP podium finish. The 24 year old finished in third place behind the Mercedes drivers to become the first Thai on the podium since 1950. His father, Nigel Albon is a former British racing driver who participated in the British Touring Car Championship and Porsche Carrera Cup. His mother, Kankamol, is from Thailand. The man Alex replaced in the Red Bull team, Pierre Gasly, won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza last week, putting additional pressure on the Red Bull team and their faith in the young Thai driver. Albon dropped into 7th place at one stage in last night’s race, battling his way back to a podium finish. “Thanks for sticking with me. The team has supported me since Day One. It’s really good to get a … [Read more...] about Thai Alex Albon scores podium finish in Tuscan Formula One GP
The Best Kept Secret In The Florida Keys
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin An independent luxury hotel in Islamorada is thriving despite increased pressure to sell to big brands. For others, it’s a different story. Locals call him “the most expensive game in town.” He doesn’t actively advertise, because he doesn’t have to. Word of mouth, a string of famous swimsuit model photo shoots, and a lifetime of labor has kept his Moorings Village in Islamorada going since 1987. It has survived devastating hurricanes, financial crises and takeover bids. But owner Hubert Baudoin is a rare breed. Born and raised in Côte d’Ivoire, you’d sooner find him windsurfing in the Bahamas or blazing trails through the desert on a motorcycle before you’d find him hunched over a balance sheet. Like his safari-chasing father before him, he is something of an extremist. One who took root in the Keys, itself a land of extremes: tranquility and raging storms, poverty and wealth, alcoholism and detox retreats. … [Read more...] about The Best Kept Secret In The Florida Keys
In Another Blow To A Healthcare Delivery Industry In Cardiac Arrest, Amazon Just Closed A Blockbuster Deal With One Medical
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Amazon has just officially closed on its highly-anticipated $3.9 billion acquisition of primary care provider One Medical. While companies including Amazon, Walmart and CVS have been slowly moving into the healthcare market for years, this latest blockbuster deal is a potential game-changer. It now gives Amazon the last piece of the puzzle they need to build a solid foundation to deliver fully integrated primary care: a nationwide brick-and-mortar presence. This latest incursion from retail disruptors is continued bad news for a broken U.S. healthcare delivery system that not only continues to fail in a big way, and on every level, but has historically been loath to pivot to a new delivery model defined by better patient outcomes and at lower cost. Together, Amazon and One Medical hope to bring a more patient-centric approach to healthcare delivery in the comfort of people’s homes. With annual memberships starting at under … [Read more...] about In Another Blow To A Healthcare Delivery Industry In Cardiac Arrest, Amazon Just Closed A Blockbuster Deal With One Medical
How To Use Networking To Transform Your Career: A Conversation With Michael Melcher
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin We all know networking is important, but we don’t always prioritize it. Yet we should! The strongest personal brands have rich and diverse networks. I reached out to Michael Melcher, the author of the upcoming book Your Invisible Network: How to Create, Maintain, and Leverage the Relationships That Will Transform Your Career to inspire us to give networking the attention it deserves. William Arruda: There are lots of books on networking and relationship building. Why did you write this one, and what makes it different? Michael Melcher : People “kind of“ know the value of relationships. But they get stuck because relationship building has a lot of nuance and can be quite complex. How do you reach out to someone you haven’t kept up with? When you ask, should you be direct or indirect? What if reciprocity seems impossible, such as when the other person is more senior or more powerful than you? How Business Leaders Can Adapt To The Future Of Innovation
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Thai Son Nguyen is a CEO and cofounder who has spent the last 16 years building a world-class e-commerce service provider through SmartOSC. The current business landscape is turbulent, complex and ambiguous. Of course, although the narrative continues, the biggest influencer of this has arguably been the Covid-19 pandemic, which amplified many challenges and forced organizations to stand face-to-face with the unknown. For a long time, we navigated a world where historical trends built context and gave us the ability to plan for what we knew as “probable outcomes.” We are now faced with the challenge of preparing for multiple potential futures and balancing the complexity of a world where anything can happen. Business leaders should make decisions faster than ever before while continuously evolving in order to stay competitive within the market. Even though the fear of the unknown has always been present, as we reach … [Read more...] about How Business Leaders Can Adapt To The Future Of Innovation
The Aviation Industry Is Investing In Sustainable Fuel, But More Is Needed
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The U.S. airline industry has set an ambitious goal to be net carbon neutral by 2050. To some this may seem like a long way off, but consider this is an industry worldwide that was built on using fossil fuels. Given the long lead time and risk to develop new aircraft, 2050 seems like it’s right around the corner. The two most popular commercial planes in the world, the Boeing 737 family and the Airbus A320 family, first took to the skies 56 and 36 years ago, respectively. The newer models are of course more efficient than these first models, but the underlying engineering for both planes is decades old. Sustainable aircraft fuel, or SAF, is one encouraging development for a more sustainable airline future. SAF uses fossil fuel by-products or plant based sources to create fuel for existing aircraft engines. With enough SAF, world airlines could become almost immediately net carbon neutral because their energy needs would no … [Read more...] about The Aviation Industry Is Investing In Sustainable Fuel, But More Is Needed
