Here’s what you should tip Uber, DoorDash, and Instacart workers

· November 6, 2019 ·

Today’s technology is built on people. You may order a product online, but humans have to pack, ship, and deliver it to you. And while Uber and Lyft dream of autonomous cars, it seems that humans will be driving you for the foreseeable future. Aside from the techy interface, the gig economy differs little from the traditional service industries of cabbies, couriers, waitstaff, and store delivery folk. advertisement advertisement So should the same tipping rules apply? This week, drivers for grocery delivery service Instacart staged a strike to demand not better pay, but better tips. The app currently nudges customers with a default 5% tip (or $2, whichever is higher). Instacart’s freelance workers are demanding that it be upped to 10%. They and workers for many other gig companies complain of ever-declining pay that makes tips more important to their bottom line. The hope is that a higher default amount could provide an important nudge to customers, who are … [Read more...] about Here’s what you should tip Uber, DoorDash, and Instacart workers

Quick Take | Gandhi family critic, Raghuram Rajan fan: How CEA Krishnamurthy sees the world

· December 10, 2018 ·

Much has been made of the support given to demonetisation by Krishnamurthy Subramanian, the government’s new Chief Economic Advisor. To be sure, he did write in his columns that demonetisation was a revolutionary act and that the poor were not the worst affected. He had disparaging things to say about the policies of the Gandhi dynasty, just before the elections to the Uttar Pradesh state assembly. He also wrote about the rise of crime in Uttar Pradesh under Mayawati and the Samajwadi Party, again just before the elections there. But while these views may have earned him brownie points among the powers that be, to his credit Subramanian hasn’t shied away from having independent views on several other subjects. For instance, he castigated the move to remove former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan, who had been his teacher; saying we don’t treat our heroes well. He has been critical of the non-implementation of several of the recommendations of the PJ … [Read more...] about Quick Take | Gandhi family critic, Raghuram Rajan fan: How CEA Krishnamurthy sees the world

Policy | Electoral bonds promote what they are supposed to prevent

· December 4, 2019 ·

K RaveendranThe Narendra Modi government has allowed itself to be damned for its electoral bond scheme. The much-fancied scheme has ended up doing whatever it was meant to prevent. Details of the murky manner in which the government evolved and implemented the scheme show why it is so.Electoral bonds were supposed to check the use of black money in funding elections and it was argued that without institutionalised funding, corporate and other interested parties would pay political parties with questionable cash, often by round-tripping and siphoning off money from their businesses.Close In practice, however, the scheme has opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate donations and anonymous financing. Instead of making election funding transparent, the bonds have put a veil of secrecy over donations, at the same time enabling the government to know who has paid whom. This makes the scheme a perfect quid pro quo mechanism for vested interests to please the ruling establishment and … [Read more...] about Policy | Electoral bonds promote what they are supposed to prevent
