Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
Larry Page (Image: Reuters) Last month, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google’s founders, held several meetings with company executives. The topic: a rival’s new chatbot, a clever A.I. product that looked as if it could be the first notable threat in decades to Google’s $149 billion search business. Mr. Page and Mr. Brin, who had not spent much time at Google since they left their daily roles with the company in 2019, reviewed Google’s artificial intelligence product strategy, according to two people with knowledge of the meetings who were not allowed to discuss them. They approved plans and pitched ideas to put more chatbot features into Google’s search engine. And they offered advice to company leaders, who have put A.I. front and center in their plans. The re-engagement of Google’s founders, at the invitation of the company’s current chief executive, Sundar Pichai, emphasized the urgency felt among many Google executives about artificial intelligence and that chatbot, … [Read more...] about Google calls in help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. fight
Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon
Not just Bengaluru, many towns and cities across India — Jodhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Silchar, Surat, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Gurugram (above), to name a few — were flooded after spells of intense rain that overwhelmed their poor and choked urban infrastructure. (Image: @ashwinning/Twitter) While there are a host of manmade and natural factors behind the increasing incidence of floods in Indian cities, it is the former that is more to blame, experts have warned, emphasising that the environment must be respected and things set right before it is too late. Unplanned construction in low-lying areas and wetlands, rampant concretisation, choked and overwhelmed storm-water drains, as well as disappearing water bodies and natural water channels are responsible for urban floods, which throw life out of gear in cities every monsoon. A spurt in spells of very heavy rainfall in short durations triggered by erratic weather patterns is a double whammy for already-choked urban infrastructure, … [Read more...] about Intense rain, choked infrastructure: Why urban India sinks every monsoon
A mother’s legacy of love
BACK HOME Carmelita Salcedo Dec. 12, 1949 – Feb. 1, 2023 —Contributed photo It is the first Sunday of February, the month of love. So let’s talk about love: the mystery from yore and yonder, from time immemorial to ever after. I am blessed to have received the truest kind of love, the kind described by St. Paul—patient, kind, does not envy, does not dishonor others, does not delight in evil, is not self-seeking, is not easily angered, keeps no records of wrongs, rejoices in the truth, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Of course I received this not from a lover but from my mother! My mother, Carmelita Vargas Salcedo, was called home by the Lord and gracefully departed in her sleep on the first of February. But her legacy of love will last forever. She was my biggest food influencer. First, she ingrained in me the best flavors of home: Sta. Maria Bulacan’s chicharon, sinampalukan, embotido, monghe, achara. Then we traveled the world for food: she was my date in … [Read more...] about A mother’s legacy of love
FM Nirmala Sitharaman interview | New tax regime the future, old tax regime to stay
FM Nirmala Sitharaman breaks Budget 2023 down in an exclusive interview with Network18. While giving a boost to the new income-tax regime, the government has set no time frame to phase out the older tax regime that offers popular exemptions and deductions under various sections, said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in an exclusive interview with Network18 Group Editor Rahul Joshi . Sitharaman stressed that the new tax regime offers reasonable tax rates and simpler compliance. The new tax regime, which offers lower tax rates but minimal exemptions, was introduced in Budget 202 0. “The Prime Minister was clear that the tax-payer should know how much they are paying actually and feel the comfort of not paying much and file tax returns from the comfort of their home,” she said. She expects around 50 percent of tax-payers in "certain layers" to switch to the new tax regime voluntarily. With the new income-tax regime having completed three years, and the FM making big … [Read more...] about FM Nirmala Sitharaman interview | New tax regime the future, old tax regime to stay
Crypto is worth fixing. Regulators should get moving
After the demise of the FTX empire, the latest casualty is crypto lender Genesis Global Capital. (Representative image) The once-burgeoning realm of crypto and decentralised finance keeps imploding, presenting policy makers with a quandary: Should they just let it burn, or step in to address its now-obvious flaws? I’m with the second group. To maintain their credibility, and to derive the greatest benefit from blockchain technology, regulators should intervene and crack down on scams, protect investors and ensure market integrity. The dominoes keep falling after the demise of the FTX empire. The latest casualty, crypto lender Genesis Global Capital, probably won’t be the last. Each failure further undermines trust, reduces activity and revenue, and puts pressure on the rest of the industry. With no lender of last resort to provide emergency support — as the Federal Reserve does for traditional banks — there’s little to stop the rot. Some think that’s just fine. They argue … [Read more...] about Crypto is worth fixing. Regulators should get moving

What To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, HBO, Disney+, Amazon Prime And More
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s the weekend and that means that at least some lucky folks get to take a break from the 9-to-5 grind and relax. It’s also the middle of winter, which is a perfect time to chill out with a good movie or a binge-worthy show. This isn’t the busiest weekend for new movies and shows, but I have some suggestions along with a full list of new content coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO and more below. Wakanda Forever (Disney+) As you can see in the image above, Wakanda Forever is finally streaming. The Black Panther sequel dropped on Disney+ this week, and if you haven’t gotten around to seeing it now you have no excuses. I actually . . . still haven’t seen this movie somehow. I think when I saw the run-time (2 hours and 41 minutes) I just balked at going to it in theaters. I’d seen The Batman recently and it was too long. I knew I’d be going to Avatar: The Way Of Water soon and it was way too long. … [Read more...] about What To Stream This Weekend On Netflix, HBO, Disney+, Amazon Prime And More
