The US Restaurant Industry Has Bounded Back from Covid At Every Level From Fast Food To Fine Dining
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The doomsayers who predicted the literal demise of the U.S. restaurant industry after Covid—especially at the fine dining level—proved myopic in the extreme. A new study called the “Agency Forward Restaurant Survey” compiled by Nationwide Insurance, which both insures and advises restaurants on coping with inflation to supply chain issues shows that every segment of the industry has not just survived but in many cases is thriving well past pre-pandemic levels of business. To explain the findings I spoke with Peter McMurtrie, President of Commercial Lines at Nationwide: You say reservations have returned to pre-pandemic levels. Does this apply as much to fast food and chain restaurants (which are mainly walk-in) as with higher end and fine dining? While this research study only focused on fine dining, fast casual and family-style restaurants, recent research as well as our interactions with customers have shown fast food … [Read more...] about The US Restaurant Industry Has Bounded Back from Covid At Every Level From Fast Food To Fine Dining

Teriyaki Madness: Building A Japanese Restaurant Powerhouse Through Franchising
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Experts attribute that the fascination with Japanese food in the U.S. started in New York City back in 1964 when wrestler turned restaurateur Hiroake “Rocky” Aoki launched Benihana. Its hibachi steak was prepared right in front of guests on a grill at the table and created quite the stir. In fact, Benihana is still going strong with about 75 eateries in about 25 states. Since then, a slew of Japanese restaurant chains such as Jinya Ramen Bar and Kura Sushi, regaled for its serving sushi on its revolving conveyor belt, have flourished in the U.S. But the Japanese restaurant chain that has been most adept at expanding has been Teriyaki Madness, based in Denver, Co. It has grown due to the power of franchising since 129 of its 130 restaurants are franchised. For example, in 2022 it expanded by 29 locations; every one of which was franchised. Of those 130 locations, 126 of them are based in the U.S., spanning 26 states. … [Read more...] about Teriyaki Madness: Building A Japanese Restaurant Powerhouse Through Franchising

Reviving Retail: The Recommerce Revolution Is Helping Cash-Strapped Consumers
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The cost of living crisis continues to challenge UK shoppers, as prices for food essentials like bread, milk and cheese continue to rise. The stark reality of the impact of food price inflation can be seen in the latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) which tell us that 3 percent of families across the United Kingdom (2.1 million people) used a food bank in the year ending March 2022. In a true north/south divide reality, families in the north of England and Scotland were most likely to interact with a food bank service in the last year. As the appetite for non-essential shopping continues to be suppressed, more consumers are turning to second hand sales platforms and discount retailers as a way to save. UK sales volumes saw a 1.2 percent in February 2023 according to figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS); the most significant increase since October 2022 but nonetheless subdued. … [Read more...] about Reviving Retail: The Recommerce Revolution Is Helping Cash-Strapped Consumers
BIZ BUZZ: The next BSP chief
If veteran banker Cezar “Bong” Consing didn’t have to take over the helm of conglomerate Ayala Corp. following tycoon Fernando Zobel de Ayala’s medical emergency and subsequent retirement, there’s a good chance that he would be appointed the next Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor. From what we gather, there are prime movers in the Marcos administration who are batting for Consing to be the country’s next chief monetary and banking regulator. But now that Consing may be out of the game after accepting the post of Ayala CEO, who could the other candidates be? By this time, it appears that former BSP chief and Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno is comfortably nestled in his position as chief of the economic team. Whether or not he wants to return to the BSP, an influential source says Diokno will likely stay in this current post. Thus, among President Marcos’ options is to keep the status quo: BSP Governor Felipe Medalla (whom we hear has been backed by Diokno himself) … [Read more...] about BIZ BUZZ: The next BSP chief
Oatmilk Cream Liqueur Challenges The Category
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Kevin Burke and Paul Earle set out to create their own alcohol brand, but they knew that for an unknown brand to work, it had to disrupt a category. “My background is beverage innovation, and I worked for Coca-Cola and Beam Suntory, and Paul is a professor at Northwestern, and the two of us asked where can we disrupt a category or what opportunities are out there?” Burke says. “Two things jumped out at us: the rise of dairy-free milks and cream liqueurs, and we realized that no one’s really tried to re-invent that category.” Thus, Dottie May’s Oatmilk Cream Liqueur was born in fall of 2021. Today, they’ve expanded from a handful of bars and liquor stores in the Chicago area to distribution in the entire state of Illinois, as well as Wisconsin and Colorado, as well as shipping through e-commerce to more than 30 different states, with plans for distribution expansion to more states this year. “Illinois, Wisconsin and … [Read more...] about Oatmilk Cream Liqueur Challenges The Category
