Biden’s Climate Goals Are Unrealistic. Does That Help Or Hurt Emissions Reduction?

April 23, 2021 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Does setting an ambitious goal encourage concerted efforts to reduce emissions, or is it more likely to make the public more cynical about the intractability of the problem? You might love or hate Franklin Delano Roosevelt, but I wish that subsequent presidents would forget about his “100 days” program which was intended to be an emergency action addressing the Great Depression. It has left at least some of his successors feeling they need to show similar verve in designing policies to address the most salient problems of the day. Most such have not been a success, with the Clinton effort to quickly fashion and enact a health care plan one of the most obvious failures. In keeping with tradition, the Biden Administration has come up with a goal of reducing American greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. Biden’s vision has met with the usual degree of praise, scorn and skepticism, validating the old maxim ‘where you … [Read more...] about Biden’s Climate Goals Are Unrealistic. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The legal industry has been remarkably buoyant in a tumultuous world. It has weathered 9/11, the global financial crisis, economic downturns , automation, digital transformation , domestic and international instability, and the Pandemic. RBNZ chief warns New Zealand home prices will keep falling

August 17, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (Aug 17): The Reserve Bank of New Zealand forecast home prices will keep sliding, as it hiked interest rates by half a point for the fourth straight meeting, with Governor Adrian Orr saying the central bank has clearly signalled risks to homebuyers. “The central projection assumes that prices will continue to decline until the September 2023 quarter,” the RBNZ said in a release. “This would result in a total decline of 15% from the December 2021 quarter peak, slightly more than assumed in the May Statement.” The Real Estate Institute’s price index slid 2.9% from a year earlier, the first fall since 2011, the group said last week. The gauge has dropped for five consecutive months. At a press briefing in Wellington, Orr was asked what he would say to those who have bought homes only to see prices drop and mortgage-servicing costs rise. Recent buyers should expect some belt-tightening, he said. “First and foremost we aren’t heartless,” Orr said, underlining … [Read more...] about RBNZ chief warns New Zealand home prices will keep falling

China warns US against sailing warships through Taiwan strait

August 17, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

Qin Gang - A + A WASHINGTON/HONG KONG (Aug 17): China called on the US to refrain from sailing naval vessels through the Taiwan Strait, saying Beijing would take further action in the wake of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei. China’s ambassador to Washington, Qin Gang, said on Tuesday that China viewed such Taiwan transits as an escalation by the US and an effort to support the “separatist” government in Taipei. He delivered the warning after Senator Edward Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, wrapped up the second trip to the island in less than two weeks by a US congressional delegation. “The US side has done too much and going too far in this region,” Qin said in response to a question about potential naval patrols. “I do call on our American colleagues to refrain, to exercise restraint, not to do anything to escalate the tension. So if there’s any moves damaging China’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, so China will respond. China will … [Read more...] about China warns US against sailing warships through Taiwan strait

August 16, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Meetings get a bad rap. However, their lousy reputations aren’t unwarranted since most people consider meetings a waste of time alongside stoking a lack of motivation and energy-sapping feelings. According to these sentiments, most meetings are terrible, and they’re getting more time-consuming and even less liked. advertisement advertisement If you’re a blatant opponent of meetings, you are not alone. A study by Atlassian found U.S. businesses waste $37 billion in salary costs for unnecessary meetings, and the average person attends a whopping 62 meetings per month. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) started its science mission just a few weeks ago, surpassing all expectations while astonishing scientists and the public alike. Its infrared instruments and a light-collecting area 6.25 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope are delivering sharper photos that go further into the Universe’s past than ever before. advertisement advertisement And yet, it will soon feel like a toy camera. The Webb is just the beginning of a new golden age of astronomy that is bringing us devices that will capture images that we can’t even imagine right now—the aggregate of which will change our perception of existence itself. Two of these future machines are very different from the JWST, each representing two completely different design philosophies. One is the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT), a titanic device equipped with seven 27.5-foot mirrors that will be housed inside a 12-story building on top of Las Campanas Observatory … [Read more...] about These next-gen telescopes will make the James Webb look like a toy
