Curtain raiser | Sundance 2023: Screen time for India’s fears and frustrations
Indians showcase at Sundance Film Festival 2023. (Photos courtesy of Sundance Institute) If India's forthcoming run at Sundance 2023 had a theme, it would probably be the wilderness. Elephants, fish, white ants, and nocturnal beasts mark the stories featuring the country that will make their debut at the Utah-based film festival. Sundance platforms independent dramatic features and documentaries and brings some of the first international film showings of the calendar year. Titles that premiere there contend with the most troubling questions of the present moment. Indian filmmakers have regularly taken their work to the festival, particularly after the Sundance Institute began organising screenwriters and directors’ labs in the region. Such interactions have helped produce films including Margarita with a Straw (2014), Lunchbox (2015), and Fire in the Mountains (2021). Of documentary, episodes, and shorts Sundance Film Festival is biggest film festival to start … [Read more...] about Curtain raiser | Sundance 2023: Screen time for India’s fears and frustrations

Getty The U.S. women's national team claimed the mantle of "best in the world" when it won the 2015 Women's World Cup, and nothing has happened in the last three years to change that. On the contrary, the USWNT has only gone on to bolster its resume as the top soccer team on earth. The Yanks are unbeaten since July 2017 and are in the midst of a 10-match winning streak in which they've outscored opponents 39-to-1. Every four years, a World Cup title is expected from the USWNT, both from the supporters and the team itself. New army chief declares he’ll protect Thailand’s monarchy and restore peace
PHOTO: naewna At a time of mass pro-democracy protests, with some activists facing charges for criticising the role of the Thai head of state, the new army chief says he pledges to restore peace and protect the country’s monarchy. In a ceremony formerly saying farewell to retiring generals, incoming army chief Narongphan Jitkaewtae said he would restore peace and be loyal to the Thai Monarchy. His statement comes at a time when many people are speaking out against Thailand’s military-run government and calling for changes to the constitution (voted for by referendum in 2017). A number of protest leaders face charges relating to their actions at protests, like breaking the emergency decree back in July for holding a large public gathering, as well as violating the lèse majesté law for criticising or insulting Thailand’s King or members of the royal family. “Protecting the monarchy with absolute loyalty and supporting the government to resolve national problems and working to … [Read more...] about New army chief declares he’ll protect Thailand’s monarchy and restore peace
Where is everyone getting those AI avatars? How Lensa took over the internet
Since launching in 2018, the app Lensa has been buried in a heap of photo-editing programs available in the iOS App store. It was one of those apps that spams you with promises of the kinds of perfectly beautified mug shots that are 100% guaranteed to disappoint Tinder dates later on. Now, at least judging by the infinite stream of images tagged #lensa , it feels like it’s the most popular app in the galaxy. The reason, I believe, is that it serves as an extraordinary vehicle for self-expression. People are curating and posting idealized versions of themselves, showcasing their inner desires to others like never before. View this post on Instagram A post shared by David Huang ???????? (@h.xcvii) Like many of the truly wonderful (and terrible) things on the internet today, Lensa’s rise through the app ranks happened, thanks to generative artificial intelligence, the neural network magic that conjures … [Read more...] about Where is everyone getting those AI avatars? When bringing your ‘whole self’ to work could be a bad idea
You should never change who you are to fit into a job or company culture. According to an article in Psychology Today , authenticity is linked to self-esteem and can protect against mental illness. But should you reveal all of yourself at the office? While “bring your whole self to work” is a popular HR talking point, in some cases it could do more harm than good, says Erin Thomas, head of diversity, inclusion, and belonging for the talent marketplace Upwork. “The original impetus for [bringing your whole self to work] was an invitation for folks to show up authentically,” she says. “That’s ideal and certainly an aspiration. This one-liner talk track has become shorthand throughout the years as a way to try to be inclusive. But as this tagline is being used more and more, there is less and less nuance or context around it, and that’s what concerns me.” Bringing your whole self to work is like the relationship status “it’s complicated,” says Karina Bernacki, vice … [Read more...] about When bringing your ‘whole self’ to work could be a bad idea
Asian Review: More $000s Than Heroes Of Late
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At this fall’s Forbes Global CEO Conference in Bangkok, I asked a panel of wisemen: Where is the transformative national leader of our day, akin to Lee Kuan Yew in 1960s Singapore or (forgetting Tiananmen) Deng Xiaoping in China? Worldwide, I suggested Abiy Ahmed, the peace-and-prosperity young reformer who is prime minister of Ethiopia. Were he to succeed in a country more populous than the Philippines, Africa’s chronically-beset Sahel region would be transformed. The panelists didn’t offer much. Sinophile Allan Zeman suggested Xi Jinping. Sorry, Allan, but I meant positive transformations. The implication of this exercise for Asia-Pacific in particular is that in an era when vast new possibilities loom, when widespread affluence has replaced common poverty in much of the region, public governance isn’t up to the raised expectations. The most crying shame is Aung San Suu Kyi in Myanmar, a tragedy of missed opportunity. But … [Read more...] about Asian Review: More $000s Than Heroes Of Late
Five simple social media tips to promote your SME business
plan to use a mix of social media platforms to reach out to different segments and learn what works best. Representational image. (Photo: dlxmdeia via Unsplash) In the last edition of Smart Growth, we had outlined the importance of social media marketing for an SME (small and medium enterprise), the starting point for which is a good plan. Plan slow and act fast should be the mantra here. Once the plan is decided, start the execution. Social media is changing by the day, so start small, and learn what works for your company and industry. In order to do so, first identify the right platforms for your business. Should you be using Facebook (FB), Instagram (Insta), Twitter (TW), or TikTok? If your target audience comprises millennials, you may think that they are not on TikTok or Instagram. Do not make such assumptions. Millennials are more than 35 years old today. Apparently, 41 percent of them only use FB, while 68 percent use Instagram and TikTok. On the other hand, if you … [Read more...] about Five simple social media tips to promote your SME business
WPL boost: Women’s IPL will catapult Indian cricket to newer heights
Indian women's cricket team. (Photo: Twitter) On December 11, an estimated 47,000 people crammed into the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai for a T20 International. The number is remarkable only because it was the second T20I between the women’s teams of Australia and India and had bettered the number from the first T20I — an approximate 25,000 at the same venue. The crowd got their money’s worth. The match was tied after India chased down Australia’s 187-run target before a one-over eliminator decided the match in India’s favour. The visitors won the series 4-1 though. “The fact that we play in front of only, maybe, 5,000 people in WBBL (Women’s Big Bash League); to come out and play in front of a crowd with 47,000 was unbelievable,” ESPN Cricinfo reported Australian player Heather Graham as saying. “This showcases the crowds women’s cricket can get and how exciting it can be.” The rocking numbers were a precursor to what has transpired this week — a proof of the popularity … [Read more...] about WPL boost: Women’s IPL will catapult Indian cricket to newer heights
