Cyber Threats Beyond Earth: Securing In-Space Manufacturing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Our global society is heavily dependent on space-based technologies. Most of us are aware that space positioning, weather and communications systems are critical to our transportation activities. I’m writing this article on a plane that is using GPS to route my flight safely around severe weather patterns that have been identified by satellites. If I finish this article inflight, I’ll upload it for publication at Forbes via a geosynchronous communications satellite. Still, many people would be surprised to learn that modern factories also depend on satellites . Manufacturing automation systems synchronize the operations of multiple robots on their production lines using the timing signals provided by GPS satellites . In fact, GPS is really a collection of 24 (plus spares) orbiting atomic clocks, each continually broadcasting time data. Your Uber is guided by tiny differences in the time signal emanating from four or more … [Read more...] about Cyber Threats Beyond Earth: Securing In-Space Manufacturing
Roe v. Wade Is No More. What Businesses Need to Know About Covering Abortions
The United States Supreme Court on Friday eliminated the constitutional right to obtain an abortion , casting aside nearly 50 years of precedent that began with the Roe v. Wade case. The highly-charged case, decided by the court's conservative majority, is sure to spill over into the workplace. Business owners who don't already know where they stand on the issue, are likely going to have to figure one out, especially if they want to help employees with covering the costs of getting legal abortions. The 6-3 decision , which has been anticipated since a draft opinion leaked in May, will lead to near total bans on the procedure in about half of the states across the country. Twenty-two states already impose strict restrictions while 18 states are expected to ban abortion outright, or only allow it in limited circumstances. Thirteen states, including Texas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, already have trigger laws in place that took effect automatically, while others are written to … [Read more...] about Roe v. Blue-green eggshell pigments ... [+] protect the embryo from sunlight, which can be adaptive as long as light levels are low enough not to heat up the eggs. (Credit: Daniel Marquard / Creative Commons.) Daniel Marquard / Creative Commons When I was teaching ornithology, there were several questions that my students would invariably ask at some point during the academic term. One was why are robin eggs blue? Even Charles Darwin wondered about the evolutionary reasons that birds' eggshells range in color from white to dark greenish-blue. Since this is such a simple and obvious question to ponder, you'd think someone would have figured out the reason long ago. And indeed, there are a number of … [Read more...] about Why Are Robin Eggs Blue?
