A new breed of investment platforms has cropped up in recent years allowing users to buy and sell company shares without incurring a broker charge. Commission-free share trading is one of the latest exports from the US, where the rapid growth of zero-fee platforms like Robinhood is eating into the margins of Wall Street banks. At present, there are only two investment platforms in Britain offering this: Trading 212 and Freetrade. For the full fiscal year, Best Buy’s comparable sales increased 4.8%, its fifth consecutive year of growth, the company said Wednesday. The retailer’s comparable sales, which include revenue from stores, websites and call centers operating for at least 14 months, rose 3% for the three months ended Feb. 2. The chain has turned around its fortunes in recent years by matching prices, offering more services and using stores to fulfill online orders. It has also been picking up market share in appliances and electronics from competitors, such as Sears Holdings Corp., which have closed stores. A strongly worded report from the regulator appears to have torpedoed this supermarket mega merger. What a difference a day makes. Until this morning, Sainsbury's (LSE:SBRY) was the best-performing supermarket stock over the past 12 months by some margin. Now, after the regulator's report on its proposed merger with Asda, it's the worst! After months of deliberation, the Competition and Markets Authority issued a damning report on the plan as part of its Phase 2 investigation, finding "extensive competition concerns". Market reaction was predictable, sellers sending Sainsbury's shares crashing as much as 16% in quick time. The deal could "lead to a worse experience for in-store and online shoppers across the UK through higher prices, a poorer shopping experience, and reductions in the range and quality of products offered," the CMA said, adding that prices might also rise at a large number of Sainsbury's and Asda petrol stations.
