Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin After years of intrigue and anticipation, and of course speedbumps that has been the norm for a long troubled sport in a goldmine of a location, Major League Cricket was spectacularly unveiled in Houston on Sunday. With a pool of overseas stars limited - due to international commitments and India's contracted players unable to play beyond their homegrown Indian Premier League - the MLC did well to recruit several well-known players still at their peak. Salary caps were reportedly around $1 million per team with top players set to receive similar remuneration per game to cashed-up start-up leagues in the UAE UAE and South Africa. Also drafted were a host of expat players, who are flying the flag for a pro cricket league hoped to finally fuel the rise of cricket in the world's biggest market. While born and bred players were perhaps predictably outnumbered, MLC is hoped to spark interest in the younger … [Read more...] about America’s New Major League Cricket Has A Footprint From Cashed-Up India

Retail Real Estate Development Looks To India
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Ajay is a Managing Director at Taurus Investment Holdings and leads the Boston-based global investor's India business . After higher holiday sales than expected in 2022, it would be tempting to imagine that all is well again in the retail and retail real estate industries, which were ravaged worldwide by two years of pandemic-related closures and restrictions. The truth is, however, far from rosy; retailers across the U.S. are, in fact seeing muted sales (registration required) as inflation makes shoppers apprehensive about opening their wallets. With a long-term glut of shopping center space and widespread pain among stalwart mall tenants, many malls across the country may close or be converted to other uses, including residential units and offices. The outlook for malls across Western Europe also remains cloudy. Data (registration required) from retail footfall tracking specialist Sensormatic shows that … [Read more...] about Retail Real Estate Development Looks To India
New Study: Hungary, Paris Have Best Tourist Attractions
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Naming the world’s best and worst tourist attractions is certainly subjective and an inexact science. A new analysis by a United Kingdom-based luggage storage service yields some surprising choices. The world’s best attraction is the Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest, Hungary, according to analysts at Stasher who ranked 99 tourist destinations based on Google reviews, quality of accommodations, distance to the nearest international airport, tourist safety and TikTok popularity. The neo-Gothic building, home to the National Assembly, stands next to the Danube River and has been a World Heritage Site since 2011. It is one of the world’s “most stunning” buildings, “an invaluable part of our national treasure and the pride of the Hungarian nation,” Hungary’s government website says. The building, according to Stasher, scored highly for Google reviews, TikTok popularity and quality local accommodations. Asia shares hope for best as Fed decides on rates
A woman walks past a screen displaying the Hang Seng Index at Central district, in Hong Kong, China March 21, 2023. REUTERS/Tyrone Siu SYDNEY – Asian shares staged a cautious bounce on Wednesday with hopes a global banking crisis would be averted vying with uncertainty over the outlook for U.S. interest rates as the Federal Reserve holds a high-stakes meeting on policy. Efforts by U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to calm nerves seemed to be working with bank shares rallying overnight. Government officials were also pondering increasing the limit on deposit insurance, though there was no agreement on this as yet. Strains were still evident among regional U.S. banks with shares of First Republic Bank sliding on suggestions the government might be involved in a rescue deal, perhaps disadvantaging shareholders. The unease left both S&P 500 futures and Nasdaq futures barely changed. EUROSTOXX 50 futures edged up 0.2 percent, while FTSE futures rose 0.1 percent. SVB, The Banks, The Economy, And The Market
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin What happened with SVB, and what is happening with banks? On March 10, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) closed Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank. You may have seen that investors are concerned about First Republic Bank, and that UBS has acquired Credit Suisse – a Swiss bank. The failures of SVB and Signature (and current concerns about banks generally) illustrate a fundamental banking problem – a mismatch of expectations between bank depositors and bankers. Depositors want to be sure that their money is safe (as safe as money in the bank!). They subconsciously think that their bank is holding their money for them, when in fact they have lent their money to their bank. Bankers earn profits by relending their customer’s deposits. However, bankers do not say to depositors, “we earn profits by lending (and taking risks with) your deposits.” They simply announce the interest rate that they … [Read more...] about SVB, The Banks, The Economy, And The Market

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Rep. David Trone (D-Md.) sold between $450,007 and $1 million in bonds from major U.S. banks last month, shortly before the second- and third-largest bank failures in U.S. history stirred up turmoil in the nation’s banking sector, according to a new filing . Key Facts Trone sold the fixed income securities from Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Wells Fargo on February 16. That was roughly three weeks before confidence in the banking industry crashed as Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank failed and concerns mounted about how large banks’ involvement in the run largely targeting regional banks could spread the contagion. Trone—who sits on Congress’ joint economic committee and the House appropriations committee—has no added “insight into the financial markets” from his committee membership and the transactions were “unaffected by the stock market’s behavior” and the … [Read more...] about Rep. The Importance Of Benchmarking
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin bench·mark: to evaluate or check by comparison with a standard. /ˈben(t)SHmärk/ verb — gerund or present participle: benchmarking example: “we are benchmarking our performance against external criteria” The entrepreneurial community sometimes views the corporate fascination with benchmarking as a symptom of large company conservatism: when you don’t know what to do, check to see what your peers are doing instead of trying something new. Benchmarking is often dismissed as “paralysis by analysis” hated by fast-moving startup CEOs and institutional VCs. But benchmarking against best practices occurs for good reason. Over time, best practices emerge based on the experience of what actions led to successful outcomes. This is especially important in a field where there is little to no formal education, no certifications, and relatively distant regulatory agencies. In real estate, law, or … [Read more...] about The Importance Of Benchmarking
Leading Disney Ride Manufacturer Puts Itself Up For Sale
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The manufacturer of the ride systems which power many of Disney's most beloved theme park attractions has been put up for sale after over-spending in a bid to build the world's most cutting-edge roller coaster. Unbeknownst to many guests, theme park giants like Disney and Universal Studios don't tend to build their own attractions. Instead they rely on specialist engineering firms to make rides to their specification or they buy off-the-shelf systems so that their designers can give them a magic touch. This trend dates back to the early days of the theme park industry when Walt Disney himself bought six ride mechanisms from California-based manufacturer Arrow Development so that they could be part of the opening day line-up for Disneyland in 1955. Arrow made rides for small-scale amusement parks but they were given a sparkle by Disney's design wizards who are known as Imagineers due to their expertise in imaginative … [Read more...] about Leading Disney Ride Manufacturer Puts Itself Up For Sale
