Tightrope walkers will flit across a triangular rope, 30 feet in the air. Acrobats will launch themselves between four spinning wheels suspended from stadium ceilings. BMX bikers will spring off a giant trampoline. And a 360-degree set studded with massive video screens and enhanced with sonic spatial technology will envelop audiences in the spectacle. There won’t, however, be any lions, tigers, or bears. Oh my! “When you have a brand called ‘The Greatest Show on Earth,’ you can’t downscale,” says Juliette Feld Grossman, chief operating officer at Feld Entertainment, which acquired the iconic circus in 1984. “You really have to reimagine and reinvent.” Founded in 1871, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus delighted American families … [Read more...] about The Greatest Show on Earth gets a second chance

After a “near-death business experience,” Airbnb’s Brian Chesky is perfecting his home-rentals platform

March 2, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

Airbnb is No. 3 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Spring 2020 felt like a “near-death business experience,” says Airbnb cofounder and CEO Brian Chesky, as bookings dropped 80% within a few weeks . It was also an opportunity to trim back the company’s distracting side projects—tours, hotels, even an airline—and, he says, “focus on the core”: the design and experience of Airbnb’s home-rentals platform. “If not for the pandemic and the crisis, I don’t know how I would have made that pivot,” Chesky says. “But I had to basically rebuild the company a bit from the ground up.” Last spring, that work led to the biggest change to Airbnb in a decade : a top-to-bottom redesign that lets people search accommodation by category, rather than just destination, which has the benefit of introducing travelers to places and properties they might have otherwise … [Read more...] about After a “near-death business experience,” Airbnb’s Brian Chesky is perfecting his home-rentals platform

Cityblock Health is No. 29 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Cityblock Health was founded in 2017 to answer the question, as cofounder and CEO Toyin Ajayi puts it: “Why does it cost so much money to deliver care that doesn’t actually drive the outcomes we would expect?” Cityblock provides healthcare services to Medicaid and dually eligible Medicare beneficiaries, who account for a disproportionate amount of dollars spent on healthcare in the U.S., according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. It blends primary care, behavioral health, and disease management services, taking into account environmental and societal factors—such as insecure housing and living in a food desert—that can lead to chronic health conditions and hospitalizations. Cityblock’s clinics are staffed with teams of doctors, nurses, social workers, and mental health providers, and it … [Read more...] about This startup has raised $600 million to give lower-income Americans better healthcare

Self-care isn’t enough. 3 ways BIPOC leaders can combat burnout

March 24, 2023 by www.fastcompany.com

As a Black woman in an industry—wellness—that’s overwhelmingly white, I know what it’s like to be in classes or scrolling social media accounts that weren’t created with me in mind. Genuine care requires us to clarify where we’re focusing our attention, which allows us to have realistic expectations about impact and accountability. I know that there are ways I can better advocate for myself, and I also know that I live within societal and cultural ecosystems designed not to hear me as a Black woman. Self-care helps us cope with our present external realities, but it won’t always directly change them. As BIPOC leaders, we face unique challenges. Here are some ways to care for yourself amidst those challenges. Ditch the perfectionism The more marginalized identities you have, the more you’ll likely grapple with perfectionism, because we’re socialized to believe that the norm, and those who lead it, look and operate differently than us. For many of us who are … [Read more...] about Self-care isn’t enough. 3 ways BIPOC leaders can combat burnout
