Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As a fan of school-based TV series - from Room 222 , Welcome Back, Kotter and The White Shadow to The Bronz Zoo , Coach and Beverly Hills, 90210 - I was cautiously optimistic about ABC midseason entry Abbott Elementary . But what I did not expect was it to immediately rise to my “must see” list. Set in the fictional Willard R. Abbott Elementary School in Philadelphia, the premise behind Abbott Elementary follows the daily doings of a group of teachers as a documentary crew is recording a feature on underfunded schools. Naturally, comparisons to The Office are inevitable. Both comedies are rich with a diverse array of interesting - and humorous - characters. And both half-hours are set in a workplace. But, unlike The Office , which centers on Steve Carell on the not always likeable Michael Scott, at the core of Abbott Elementary is the immediately relatable Quinta Brunson (who also created the series) as … [Read more...] about The Best New TV Show You Should Be Watching: ABC’s ‘Abbott Elementary’

Long COVID is still draining many workers. Here’s how it affects productivity
Since the very first cases of COVID-19 were identified, this new virus has largely confounded the scientific community. But perhaps even more mysterious are the wide-ranging symptoms that many who contracted the virus continue to experience long after the expected recovery period. This phenomenon is known as long COVID, or long-haul COVID. advertisement advertisement The severity of long COVID runs the gamut, with some people experiencing relatively minor but somewhat disruptive symptoms and others feeling completely incapacitated. Long-COVID symptoms can linger for a few weeks or months; some people have been living with them for more than two years now. Debilitating long-COVID symptoms occur in a small minority of cases, but they are devastatingly real for the individuals experiencing them. Despite emerging scientific and abundant anecdotal evidence, there are many people—even in the medical establishment—who remain skeptical of the potential … [Read more...] about Long COVID is still draining many workers. How, Why And When To Photograph ‘Fireballs’ From The Perseid Meteor Shower
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The peak of the Perseid meteor shower this week won’t be the best one ever . It coincides with the full Moon, which will hide all but the brightest shooting stars. In fact, while the peak of this famous summer meteor shower can deliver as many as 100 shooting stars per hour under ideal conditions, you're not likely to see more than a few per hour. So why bother trying to photograph the peak of the Perseid meteor shower this year, which happens overnight on Friday/Saturday, August 12/13? The answer is fireballs. The Perseids occur because our ever-faster spinning planet is this week moving through a dense stream of dust debris left in the inner solar system by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. A big comet with a nucleus 16 miles/26 kilometers in diameter, Swift-Tuttle last rounded the Sun in 1992 and will visit next in 2126. However, because it's made many visits to the solar system it has, over the centuries, left a lot of … [Read more...] about How, Why And When To Photograph ‘Fireballs’ From The Perseid Meteor Shower
How To Build A Progressive Brand Using Modern Media (Part II)
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Whether you know what you’re talking about or not, if you’re a guest on TV, everyone will believe you know your stuff. (Psst … you’re less likely to get a guest appearance if you don’t know what you’re talking about!). Part I of this blog series was all about using different platforms to build your personal brand. Part II here is about leveraging the brand you built online to appear before a larger audience. Another way to think of this is that using social media (i.e., blogs, podcasts, YouTube, and Facebook/Instagram) serves as a foundation or springboard. That’s not to say that you can’t have an amazing, and lucrative, brand using any one of the platforms listed in Part I , because you can. But depending on what your goals are, you might also want to explore appearances on radio, television, or TEDx stages. Let’s unpack how this could look for you... 1. A New Year and a New Leader, but Germany’s Focus Remains on COVID
Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholz There was a new face delivering the chancellor’s New Year’s Eve address, but for COVID-19-weary Germans, the focus was all too familiar. Under normal circumstances, Chancellor Olaf Scholz — the first person in nearly two decades other than Angela Merkel to deliver the address — would have used the occasion Friday to lay out his vision and wish people a happy new year. But these are not normal circumstances, so while he was able to touch on a variety of issues like climate change, the economy and European security, the spotlight was on the coronavirus and the country’s response to it. In writing the speech, Scholz and his staff appeared keenly aware that their best hope of pushing through their agenda was to inspire a sense of national cohesion in a country where the differences have often been on vivid display. “What I perceive everywhere is a huge solidarity, an overwhelming willingness to help and a new sense of pulling together and … [Read more...] about A New Year and a New Leader, but Germany’s Focus Remains on COVID

Finally, A Safe Way To Play The Market — Upside Investing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Upside Investing represents a revolution in investment/spending strategy. It lets you set a living standard floor that only rises as a result of investing in stocks and other risky assets. The higher your floor, the lower your upside and vice versa. The stock market is, once again, going nuts — dropping relentlessly, then bouncing back, only to plunge again, but then recovering, well, kind of, and … This is, in short, excruciating times for those counting on the market to see them through retirement. Stocks have always been a high-reward, high-risk ride. But since the Great Recession, the market seemed reliable. No longer. Today’s economic and geopolitical world is crazzzy and the stock market doesn’t like crazzzy . We now face raging inflation, round three of COVID, lingering supply-chain disruptions, on-again-off-again Chinese production, global energy and food shortages (curtesy of Vladimir the Excrement), … [Read more...] about Finally, A Safe Way To Play The Market — Upside Investing
The 2022 Perseid Meteor Shower Is Happening Now And The Nearly Full Moon Need Not Spoil It
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s a big week for sky watchers around the world with the famed Perseid meteor shower peaking now. The peak comes around the same time as a so-called “sturgeon supermoon,” which was officially at its fullest Thursday. Full moons have a nasty tendency to both be bright enough to wash out shooting stars and also stay above the horizon for much of the evening. While this is certainly less than ideal for what is typically the best time of the year for spotting meteors and fireballs, at least in the northern hemisphere, there are measures that can be taken to mitigate the effects of our biggest satellite. First of all, you can plan ahead a bit and check moonrise and moonset times for your location. The forecasts for maximum meteor activity vary a bit, but generally speaking, any time between now and Sunday morning gives you a decent chance to catch plenty of shooting stars. Something that’s much more … [Read more...] about The 2022 Perseid Meteor Shower Is Happening Now And The Nearly Full Moon Need Not Spoil It
Apple Is Getting Called Out Over the Worst Thing About the iPhone—By Google
The blue and green bubble controversy is real. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you probably don't use an iPhone--or you don't use one to send text messages to anyone else who doesn't use an iPhone. If you did, their messages would appear in little green bubbles , a sign that even though you're using the Messages app, many of the features you get when you send iMessages to another iPhone user aren't available. A lot has been written about the whole green bubble situation , including claims that Apple uses the green bubbles in order to flag non-iPhone users as second-class messaging partners on its platform. If that sounds ridiculous, consider that the stigma is real. Mostly that's because sending messages from an iPhone to any other device is a really bad experience. Your messages are sent and received as basic text messages, instead of using Apple's encrypted protocol, which is called iMessage. I know, it's confusing--iMessage is the service, and Messages is … [Read more...] about Apple Is Getting Called Out Over the Worst Thing About the iPhone—By Google
