India At G7 | Expectations from and support for India will rise rather than fall

June 24, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

(Representative image: Shutterstock) We need to look at India’s presence in the forthcoming G7 summit on June 26-27 beyond the positive hypes and negative hopes set by domestic constituencies and global narrative peddlers. On its own, there is nothing exclusive about this invitation. Apart from India, the German presidency has invited Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal, and South Africa to the summit to be held at Schloss Elmau, Bavaria. Yet, if some folks take Western pressures seriously (we don’t), India is expected to be on the back foot because it did not toe the G7 line and stood its own on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The dominant narrative today is that India needs to be punished. So far gone are these voices that global news agencies have forgotten basic journalism. They are mixing wishful thinking with facts, using the convenience of unnamed sources as cover. When they report that “ Germany is debating whether to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Group of … [Read more...] about India At G7 | Expectations from and support for India will rise rather than fall

June 24, 2022 by thethaiger.com

As Thailand Pass prepares to meet its end come July 1, it looks as if Malaysia is in line to replace the kingdom’s current tourist king, India. Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said yesterday that once Thailand Pass is no more, a larger number of Malaysian tourists than Indians is expected to make their way to the ‘Land of Smiles.’ Indians have so far made up Thailand’s biggest tourist group this year, with 100,884 arriving between January 1 and May 24. But earlier this month, Malaysians flooded into Phuket . Daily AirAsia flights from Kuala Lumpur to Phuket were fully booked. Other hotspots for Malaysian travellers were Bangkok, Krabi, Koh Samui, Phattalung, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Dannok, Had Yai, Betong, and Sungai Golok – the final three on or near the northern Malaysian border. The Tourism Authority of Thailand says 78,523 Malaysian visitors entered the kingdom in the first 5 months of the year. The Eastern Window | Shangri-La Dialogue: A missed opportunity for India?

June 20, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

there was no one to express the Indian viewpoint when the Chinese minister Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe roundly criticized India for the border clashes. (File image) One of the issues that stood out during the recent Shanghri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier security summit on June 10-12, was the absence of India at the political level. This is significant because there were defence ministers from 32 countries and also because the US and its allies tried using the event to corner China. Why did India choose to miss out on what some would regard as a "golden opportunity" to challenge Beijing's influence at an international gathering? More importantly,... … [Read more...] about The Eastern Window | Shangri-La Dialogue: A missed opportunity for India?

Forget a four-day workweek, bank employees in India want a five-day week

June 13, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

State Bank Of India As the world debates the pros and cons of adopting a four-day workweek, hundreds of thousands of bank employees in India are demanding a five-day system. At least nine unions of bank employees will go on a day’s strike on June 27 to press their demand. They want time off every Saturday and Sunday, saying the technology at the disposal of banks would allow a smooth transitioning to a five-day workweek. “We have been talking to all stakeholders for the last seven years. But things have not moved as desired. A five-day work week is a basic demand from us and it’s for the betterment of health, and work-life balance of bank employees,” C.H. Venkatachalam, general secretary of the All Indian Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), told Moneycontrol. “Nearly 900,000 bank employees will shun work and protest on 27 June to drive this message and a few other demand points,” Venkatachalam  said.
