Several reports last year indicated that there was a growing rift on the New England Patriots between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. Brady even skipped voluntary workouts to work out at his facility around the corner from the Patriots. According to one report, when Brady did return to the team, some felt that Belichick went out of his way to praise Brady and handled him differently. After winning another Super Bowl, things seem to have largely been patched up. It was no secret that things were strained between Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, and Robert Kraft with the New England Patriots last season. Several reports, including one bombshell, expose from ESPN, detailed the rift between the three men, from feeling underappreciated, to differences in opinion on the direction of the franchise. After losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, questions persisted in the offseason about the viability of the team going forward, especially as Brady seemed to protest things … [Read more...] about Tom Brady sent a loud message to the Patriots by skipping offseason workouts, and some think it caused Bill Belichick to lighten up on him
We know a lot about Patrick Mahomes, budding superstar NFL quarterback. Just not as much as we will know, perhaps soon. We know he’s been downright awesome in his second NFL season and first as a starter, joining Tom Brady and Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks to throw 50 touchdown passes in a single season. We know he throws the best no-look pass since Larry Bird. We know he has a good nature, a great hairdo, and a voice like Kermit the Frog. We might even know that his dad, Pat, had a 6.85 ERA in two seasons as a Red Sox relief pitcher. Maybe he should have been a quarterback too. What we don’t know, as he prepares to take on Brady and the Patriots in Sunday’s AFC Championship game, is whether he’s ready for this moment. He was very good in the Chiefs’ thumping of the Colts in the divisional round, but for the first time since Week 4 he did not throw a touchdown pass, and in fact it was just the third game this season that he did not throw multiple … [Read more...] about Where will Patrick Mahomes rank among the quarterbacks Tom Brady has faced in the AFC title game?
It’s easy to tell Dan Koppen spent nine seasons playing under Bill Belichick. In November, the former New England Patriots center opened a brewery in Rhode Island, and in a recent phone conversation Koppen makes clear that in his new venture, he’s taking cues from his former head coach and doing his job. “The only way to learn how to do it is to do it,’’ Koppen says of launching LineSider Brewing Co., in East Greenwich. “We’ll take it step by step, we’re not going to rush things. At each stage we’ll do it as best as we possibly can.’’ Learning for Koppen means graduating from a 5-gallon home brewing kit to 300-gallon industrial batches. Along with business partner Jeremy Ruff (their kids go to school together) and Koppen’s father-in-law, Koppen brews the beer himself. During our phone call, he’s in his truck, driving to pick up a load of grain. “My wife told me I was too young to retire,’’ … [Read more...] about Dan Koppen brings lessons from Bill Belichick to his brewing career
Ted Johnson, who won three Super Bowls as a linebacker for the Patriots from 1995-2005, has never been afraid to say what he thinks. In 2007, Johnson – who suffered both documented and undocumented concussions while playing for the Patriots – was an early voice in the ongoing discussion about head injuries in football, telling the New York Times, “There’s something wrong with my brain.” He’s continued to openly discuss his post-NFL struggles, telling CNN in 2009 that he barely left his house for two years after retiring from football. Given his personal experience with the lingering damage caused by head injuries, Johnson was not a fan of Tom Brady’s recent comments about his brain’s relationship with playing football. “Your body gets used to the hits,” Brady told Westwood One’s Jim Gray in a December interview. “The brain understands the position that you’re putting your body into, and my brain is wired for … [Read more...] about Former Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson criticized Tom Brady’s claim that his ‘brain’s wired for contact’
