Don't make the mistake of thinking it's all about you. TED Talks are not memoirs. This may sound harsh, but it’s not about you. Don’t get caught up in your own story. Rather, focus on your impact and sharing meaningful knowledge with the world. Ask yourself, how will your talk … [Read more...] about 10 Dos And Don’ts To Jumpstart Your Journey To The TED Stage

Automation Is A Strategy, Not (Only) A Means Or An End
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Romi Stein is CEO & cofounder of OpenLegacy , leading its strategic vision of digital-driven integration for legacy systems. In previous blogs, I have touched on automation from different aspects or levels. On the micro level, we have seen that back-of-house activities can, and should, be as automated as possible for various reasons, such as economic efficiencies and compliance. But at the customer-facing side of things, automation should support human activities. On the macro level, combining AI and automated processes can provide startling new abilities and opportunities. Machine learning and neural networks utilizing existing resources and processes are already beginning to make waves (Walle and ChatGPT are just the beginning). There are many ways to look at technological development, most often in three or four stages: invention, innovation and diffusion—or R&D, growth, maturity and decline. … [Read more...] about Automation Is A Strategy, Not (Only) A Means Or An End
Bank of England hikes rates by half-point to tame inflation
Bank of England, London (File image: Reuters) The Bank of England raised interest rates by half a percentage point Thursday as it sought to tame double-digit inflation that is fueling a cost-of-living crisis, public-sector strikes and fears of recession. The bank’s monetary policy committee voted 7-2 to push its key rate to 4%, approving the 10th consecutive rate increase since a post-pandemic surge in the world economy and Russia’s war in Ukraine drove inflation to 40-year highs. Economists suggest this may be the last big rate increase for Britain’s central bank as inflation begins to slow. “The extent to which domestic inflationary pressures ease will depend on the evolution of the economy, including the impact of the significant increases in Bank Rate so far,” the bank said in a statement. “There are considerable uncertainties around the outlook.” The U.S. Federal Reserve has already started tapering its response, boosting its key rate by just a … [Read more...] about Bank of England hikes rates by half-point to tame inflation
4.5-Acre Oceanfront Maui Property Hits The Market For $5.5 Million
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In Maui, life revolves around the beach. The $5.5-million plantation-style residence in Wailuku on Hawaii’s second-largest island takes full advantage of its oceanfront setting. The 4.5-acre property at 490 and 497 Lilihua Place was custom-built in 2020 to maximize access and views. The beach lies right outside the backyard, a perfect location for surfing, kitesurfing, standup paddling and just kicking back and watching sunsets. “There’s big wave activity out there that’s just amazing,” says listing agent Brad MacArthur of Hawaii Life. Love horses? There’s plenty of room for equestrian activities too. Views abound inside the elevated main house. “As soon as you walk in the front door, all the glass around the hall showcases the ocean view,” MacArthur says. There’s not a bad view from any window in the five-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home. The property also has a one-bedroom cottage with a private entrance. The main … [Read more...] about 4.5-Acre Oceanfront Maui Property Hits The Market For $5.5 Million
When The College Of Last Resort Is A Resort
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin My grandmother Estelle Craig was a remarkable woman. She was a journalist in the 1940s; a letter to her from J. Edgar Hoover hangs on my office wall. In the 1950s she founded a travel business – World Adventure Tours – that marketed tours via celebrity talks on exotic locales; a signed photo of Sir Edmund Hillary hangs right above J. Edgar. When the Duke of Bedford came to town – presumably to sell tours of Bedford and environs – she got media attention by starting a rumor that he was planning to buy Toronto’s only castle . She loved travel, hobnobbing, and making trouble, in that order. She was also generous. Before she passed away at the age of 103, my kids would send her thank you cards for birthday gifts. Even at that remarkable age she was as sharp as a tack, but had trouble seeing and hearing. My son Leo liked to type his on an electric typewriter, leading to this exchange: Leo: Dad, should I type her thank you … [Read more...] about When The College Of Last Resort Is A Resort
Opinion: Border security won’t quell the crush of humanity seeking safety in the U.S.
The humanitarian crisis on the Southwestern border has reached a critical stage. El Paso, Texas, is struggling to handle the influx of migrants. It converted a convention center and two middle schools into migrant housing facilities because the city shelters were overwhelmed, but hundreds of migrants still sleep on the city streets. And the challenge is not confined to the border towns. Hundreds of miles away, New York City, Chicago, and Denver, among others, find their resources strained to address the needs of the migrants. The crisis cries for a solution, but none is in sight. Critics call for securing the border, and deterring the illegal crossers, including giving border patrol authority to immediately expel them, strictly enforcing the immigration laws, and reinstituting former President Donald Trump’s harsh policies such as “Stay-in-Mexico” and separation of children from parents and families. Deterrence has not worked, and the surge of migrants continues unabated. … [Read more...] about Opinion: Border security won’t quell the crush of humanity seeking safety in the U.S.
The Best Roombas: Here Are The Top 5 Models
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin iRobot’s line of Roomba robot vacuums are every busy homeowner’s dream. Like all robot vacuums , they promise to whip around the house, automatically cleaning up life’s messes with the push of a button—no vacuum bags or nozzle attachments required. But which is the best Roomba? The brand makes four different core models: the Roomba 694 , Roomba s9+ , Roomba j7+ and the Roomba i3+ EVO . They’re not all created equally: some Roombas are smarter and more powerful than others. Before selecting one, make sure to assess how often you plan to use it and the level of autonomy you want your robot to have. Some models can map and “learn” your house, while others can target specific messes and avoid obstacles. (I tested the Roomba 694 over three weeks to see how well Roomba’s most affordable model cleaned our floors; here’s my full Roomba 694 review. ) Roomba now offers a subscription service for the j7+, too, should you … [Read more...] about The Best Roombas: Here Are The Top 5 Models
Make Panettone Bread Pudding For Your Valentine
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to bake heart-shaped desserts and indulge your sweet tooth. And, I can’t think of a better thing to make than a decadent bread pudding studded with strawberries and chocolate. Bread pudding is one of those desserts that eats like a warm hug. It is so easy to make that even self-proclaimed non-bakers can make it. My version uses a blender to make the custard and that means if you can make a smoothie, you can make this bread pudding! This recipe is very adaptable. I use different kinds of bread based on what flavors I am looking to bake into my bread pudding and I sometimes add sautéed or dried fruit to the mix. I often use raisin bread, but this year I discovered something even better! A candied wild strawberry and dark chocolate panettone from Olivieri 1882 and it’s the ultimate bread for bread pudding. The strawberry-chocolate San Valentino Panettone is a limited-edition heart-shaped … [Read more...] about Make Panettone Bread Pudding For Your Valentine
World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye
Dr Sewanti Limaye, Director, Precision Oncology, HN Reliance Hospital and Research Centre. Cancer is among the most researched diseases in the world. For most cancers, early detection is rare, and there isn’t enough consensus among oncologists, researchers and practitioners of non-Western medicine on its exact causes. Overall, a few broad causes have been conclusively established: Cancer may arise as a consequence of genomic abnormalities such as mutations, or when the body’s immune system weakens or collapses, or due to external assaults to the body such as tobacco use, exposure to chemicals and radiation and certain infections. But much like the human body, much of this disease is a mystery. There is no one cause and there is no one cure. As Pulitzer Prize-winning author and oncologist Siddhartha Mukherjee has written in his cancer magnum opus The Emperor of All Maladies , “That this seemingly simple mechanism—cell growth without barriers—can lie at the heart of this … [Read more...] about World Cancer Day 2023 | Precision oncology is a new way of looking at cancer treatment: Dr Sewanti Limaye
Women’s Under-19 World Cup Final: Shafali Verma’s India and their tryst with destiny

Nearly 18 years on from their first qualification for a World Cup final, an Indian women’s team is in sight of the world champions’ crown again. The dream the senior side couldn’t fulfil against a relentless Australia in the 2005 Women’s ODI World Cup final in South Africa now awaits realising with the junior team of the same country. When Shafali Verma leads India out to the JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom for the title bout of the inaugural Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup against England on Sunday, she’ll have a shot at reimagining history and writing it anew — for herself and India. “Leading India in a World Cup final means a lot to me,” said Verma, a senior T20 World Cup and Commonwealth Games finalist, after India’s final nets session at the U-19 World Cup, on match eve, which was also her 19th birthday. “Many years ago, my papa had told me, ‘You will … [Read more...] about Women’s Under-19 World Cup Final: Shafali Verma’s India and their tryst with destiny
