In May 2016, a group of national health experts issued an urgent plea in a private letter to high-level officials in the Obama administration. Thousands of people were dying from overdoses of fentanyl – the deadliest drug to ever hit U.S. streets – and the administration needed to take immediate action. The epidemic had been escalating for three years. The 11 experts pressed the officials to declare fentanyl a national “public health emergency” that would put a laserlike focus on combating the emerging epidemic and warn the country about the threat, according to a copy of the letter. “The fentanyl crisis represents an extraordinary public health challenge – and requires an extraordinary public health response,” the experts wrote to six administration officials, including the nation’s “drug czar” and the chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. TULSA, Oklahoma — On a fall morning in 2018, veteran technology teacher Abraham Kamara was working with his robotics team at Memorial Junior High School when Tulsa school superintendent Deborah Gist entered the classroom with a TV news crew. Gist was there to surprise Kamara with the school year’s first Golden Apple Award, recognizing him as one of Tulsa’s “outstanding teachers.” “We have heard so much about everything you do … making sure your kids have all the tools they need to be successful,” Gist said, her exuberance matched by the candy-apple red blazer she wore for the occasion. Handing him the palm-sized trophy, she continued, “We also recognize that you go above and beyond in this room, often at your own expense,” adding that the award comes with a $500 classroom grant.Story Continued Below Gist launched Tulsa’s Golden Apple Awards when she took the helm of the district three years ago, partnering with the … [Read more...] about Deborah Gist Used to Fight Teachers Unions. Julie Hinds Detroit Free Press Published 9:53 AM EST Jan 11, 2019 They've seen the movie, and now they're reading the original "Bird Box" book. The 2014 novel by Ferndale author/musician Josh Malerman has landed for the first time on the New York Times best-seller list, thanks to the overwhelming success of the Sandra Bullock-starring horror movie from Netflix. It ranks fourth for combined print and e-book fiction — and it's on the rise. Last week, it debuted at seventh place. The novel also bumped former First Lady Michelle Obama's memoir "Becoming" from the top of the Apple books list. As of Thursday, "Bird Box" was at No. 1, with "Becoming" in second place. For a book that debuted modestly five years ago, it's the publishing world equivalent of going viral (just like "Bird Box" memes and jokes have).
