Welcome aboard, one and all—and mind the dip. Another wave of selling crashed into U.S. equity markets last week, with all three of the major averages suffering their fourth losing week in five. That summer comeback rally that started in mid-June is starting to smell more and more like a bear market bounce . The Dow dropped 4.1% last week, the S&P 500 fell 4.8%, and the NASDAQ was down 5.5%. Yikes! That summer fling, which started on June 16, topped out on August 15—and since then—according to our pals at YCharts, the Nasdaq is down nearly 13%, while the S&P 500 and Dow Industrials are down more than 9% each. The S&P 500 has now closed below its 200-day moving average for the longest stretch since the Great Financial Crisis . Get used to that refrain. With the three major market averages now approaching those June lows again, market technicians are warning that if those levels don't hold, stocks could be headed down at least another 5 to 10%, and maybe more. - A + A (Sept 28): The S&P 500 fell to its lowest level in almost two years on Tuesday (Sept 27) on worries about super aggressive Federal Reserve policy tightening, trading under its June trough and leaving investors appraising how much further stocks would have to fall before stabilising. Stocks have been under pressure since late August after comments and aggressive actions by the US Federal Reserve signalled the central bank's top priority is to stamp out high inflation even at the risk of putting the economy into a recession. The S&P 500 touched a session low of 3,623.29, its lowest point on an intraday basis since Nov 30, 2020. A late rally helped push the index off its worst level of the day, but the index still closed lower for a sixth straight session as it lost 7.75 points, or 0.21%, to 3,647.29. After the benchmark index fell more than 20% from its early January high to a low on June 16, which confirmed that the retreat was indeed a bear market, … [Read more...] about S&P 500 falls to two-year low, bear market rally snuffed out

- A + A NEW YORK/BENGALURU (Sept 27): Wall Street's main indexes sank deeper into a bear market on Tuesday as an early rally in stocks faltered after Federal Reserve policymakers advocated more interest rate hikes, even at the risk of slowing economic growth. The benchmark S&P 500 erased gains of up to 1.7% by early afternoon trading to hit lows last seen in late November 2020, leaving investors worrying about how much further stocks would have to fall before stabilising. St Louis Fed President James Bullard made a case for more rate hikes, while Chicago Fed President Charles Evans said the central bank will need to raise rates by at least another percentage point this year. Analysts at Wells Fargo now see the US central bank taking its target range for the Fed funds rate to 4.75%-5.00% by the first quarter of 2023. "It's just a continuation of Jerome Powell's digging in and trying to really let markets, investors and the world know that we are going to have … [Read more...] about Wall St deep in bear market as S&P 500 hits new two-year low
- A + A MANILA (Sept 27): Philippine stocks tumbled to a two-year low as foreigners dumped equities, with the peso weakening to a record low against the dollar, driving inflation concerns. The Philippine Stock Exchange Index slumped 3.8% to close at 6,020.07, its lowest level since October 2020. The gauge dropped nearly 5% earlier, bringing its decline from a February peak to more than 20% intraday. The market was closed due to a typhoon on Monday, as global stocks sank on worry over the impact of US Federal Reserve's (Fed) tightening. The dollar's strengthening on hawkish Fed policy has sunk the peso, raising concerns on soaring prices for imported goods and countermeasures by the central bank. The Philippine currency's "downbeat near-term outlook" could lead to a "potential off-cycle rate hike for the Bangko Sentral or much higher rate hikes — more than 50 bps (basis points) — toward the end of the year", said Carlos Temporal, an analyst at AP Securities … [Read more...] about Philippine stocks flirt with bear market, fall to two-year low
