Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever
- A + A (June 30): It was an unusually frigid December weekend when Cheng Wei summoned his inner circle to his Beijing office. The founder of Didi Global Inc, dressed entirely in black, told his lieutenants to slash spending by a fifth in 2022 and begin layoffs after staff return from Lunar New Year vacations. He delivered his bombshell flanked by a giant Powerpoint slide that read: “Don’t live with illusions. Face reality.” “We had a tough year,” said the reserved billionaire known as Will, who that day seemed even gloomier than normal, according to people briefed on the gathering. “But next year will be even tougher.” That sombre gathering encapsulated what many in the room already suspected — the ride-hailing champion once feted for running Uber Technologies Inc out of China was no more. In its place was a defeated shell worth a fifth of its value at the peak, bleeding users, blocked from raising funds for cherished projects — and whose executives were constantly … [Read more...] about Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever
Indian corporates brace for delay in receivables, defaults as Russian rouble tanks
Indian corporates may face an elongated receivable cycle, or even default on payments by Russian importers due to the sharp fall in Russian Rouble , bankers said. The Russian Rouble fell nearly 30% on Monday against the US dollar after the country’s premier Vladimir Putin on Sunday ordered his nuclear forces to be on high alert in view of the evolving Russia-Ukraine conflict . Separately, in view of the steep depreciation of its currency, the Bank of Russia on Monday decided to increase the key rate to 20% per annum from 9.50%, the sharpest rate hike since 2014, to compensate for the increased depreciation and inflation risks. “This is needed to support financial and price stability and protect the savings of citizens from depreciation,” the central bank said. Indian companies have a significant presence in Russia. As per data by Indian embassy in Russia, bilateral trade between the two countries between April 2020-March 2021 amounted to $8.1 billion. Gap between AstraZeneca vaccines cut from 16 to 12 to 8 weeks
In response to the spread of the Delta variant of Covid-19, the Public Health Ministry plans to decrease the time between the first and second AstraZeneca vaccines for people. The Delta variant is more contagious and spreads more quickly than the original Coronavirus so the decision was made to accelerate the vaccination process to protect against it. Just a few days ago, plans to stretch the gap between first and second doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to 16 weeks were scrapped. The plan was thought to buy time for the government to give more first doses to push up the number of (partially) vaccinated people in Thailand more quickly. It was called off as no clinical data exists on whether a second vaccine that far after the first would still be effective at all. After conceding the 16 week plan and dropping the gap to 10 to 12 weeks, they are hastening the process further, to just 8 weeks between vaccines. The longer spacing had been chosen based on British research, but that … [Read more...] about Gap between AstraZeneca vaccines cut from 16 to 12 to 8 weeks
