- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 21): Digital business operator PUC Bhd is partnering with Cover Touch Sdn Bhd (CTSB) and KH Lim Capital Sdn Bhd (KLCSB) to undertake online general and life insurance aggregation service business. In a bourse filing, PUC said the joint venture (JV) agreement was inked among its wholly-owned subsidiary Presto Universe Sdn Bhd (PUSB), CTSB and KLCSB. They would undertake the business through a JV company, Presto Assure Sdn Bhd (PASB) (formerly known as Founder Qube Sdn Bhd). Under the agreement, PUSB will hold a 40% stake in PASB, while CTSB and KLCSB will hold 30% each. The parties agreed to contribute RM500,000 each as share capital of PASB over a period of 12 months. The lender had reported a standalone net profit of Rs 378 crore in the October-December quarter of the previous year. However, total income fell to Rs 5,772.86 crore during the quarter compared to Rs 6,003.91 crore in the same period of 2020-21, the private sector lender said in a statement. The bank’s net interest income rose by 31 per cent to Rs 2,383 crore during the reported quarter as against Rs 1,817 crore in the year-ago period. Net Interest Margin (NIM) improved by 86 basis points to 3.65 per cent as compared to 2.79 per cent in Q3 of the previous fiscal, it said. Devastation has hit Haiti as a catastrophic 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked the struggling Caribbean nation at 8:30 am local time (7:30 pm last night in Thailand time). At least 300 people are dead but experts predict that number could rise to the tens of thousands. There is widespread destruction with homes and buildings collapsed, and Prime Minister Ariel Henry has declared a month-long state of emergency after flying over the country to survey the damage. The epicentre of the earthquake was about 5 kilometres from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes in the western part of Haiti, about 150 kilometres from the capital Port-au-Prince. Churches, hotels, schools and other buildings in the area have been turned to rubble and it’s feared that many remain trapped. Police are looking for a suspect in an attack and stabbing of 2 British men in Kanchanaburi that killed one and seriously injured the other. The attack took place early this morning at 3:55 am in front of a house in the Muang district of the western province of Thailand. Police, tourist police, and forensic officers led by the chief to the Muang Police Station raced to the crime scene. According to police, the two British men were playing loud music on a radio in front of their house as they sat at a table drinking beers. They were surprised by a Thai man with a long sickle-shaped knife confronting them and attacking them. The bulk of the loan money handed out through the government’s $800 billion Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) didn’t go to workers—it helped business owners and shareholders. That’s the finding of a new study published by top economists at the National Bureau of Economic Research. The group, which includes 10 professors and researchers—among them MIT economics professor David Autor and several Federal Reserve economists—writes in their paper that the vast majority of PPP loans given out during the first round of disbursements, in 2020, weren’t used to offset employee paychecks. Based on the numbers they crunched, primarily coming via data from payroll-management behemoth ADP, they estimate that somewhere between 23% and 34% of PPP dollars went to workers who would’ve otherwise lost their jobs.
