The 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards aired Sunday night honoring the best in film and television acting. A couple of wins were to be expected and even repeats from other award shows, but there were a number surprises, too. "The Favourite," "BlacKkKlansman" and "A Star is Born" were shut out from the awards, despite leading in the nominations. Rami Malek again took home the best actor prize for “Bohemian Rhapsody” as did Glenn Close for her performance in “The Wife.” Mahershala Ali has proven his performance worthy of recognition with three wins already under his belt for best supporting actor for “Green Book.” Emily Blunt surprised fans and even herself for winning best supporting actress for “A Quiet Place." With the announcement of this year’s Academy Award nominations early Tuesday morning, the race to Oscar gold became a lot more clear, with certain films edging out ahead–Roma, which swept with 10 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay—and certain films losing steam. Among the latter is Black Panther, a film that just a few months ago gave Hollywood great hope that finally there was a film that could unite the elite snobs of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences with the masses whom they pray will tune in to its increasingly ratings-challenged telecast every year. Most notably, director Ryan Coogler was overlooked for Best Director. “It feels like an afterthought,” one Academy member tells me. But why, … [Read more...] about What happened to Black Panther’s Oscar momentum?
NEW YORK — Oscar voters on Tuesday showered Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" and Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Favourite" with a leading 10 nominations for the 91st Academy Awards, while two dominant but contentious Hollywood forces — Netflix and Marvel — each scored their first best picture nomination.Though many expected "A Star Is Born," Bradley Cooper's revival of one of Hollywood's most oft-remade show-business myths, to top the nominations, Cooper was surprisingly overlooked as director and the academy instead put its fullest support behind a pair of indies by international directors. With the black-and-white, Spanish-language "Roma," Netflix scored its first best picture nomination, a prize the streaming giant has dearly sought. Marvel, too, joined the club with Ryan Coogler's "Black Panther," the first superhero movie ever nominated for best picture.Cuaron tied the record for most decorated Oscar nominee ever for one film with four individual nods for "Roma," his deeply … [Read more...] about Oscar nods honor ‘Roma,’ ‘The Favourite,’ ‘Black Panther

"Black Panther" on Tuesday morning became the first superhero movie ever nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards, breaking a barrier that's kept decades of popular hits out of the running. The bad news? "Black Panther" didn't get nods in the major acting categories, despite hopes that Michael B. Jordan might score a best supporting actor nomination. Also left out? Director Ryan Coogler, who's credited with giving "Black Panther" such cultural relevancy and emotional heft. "Black Panther" received a total of seven nominations, including a best costuming nod for acclaimed film costumer Ruth E. Carter. The movie also was nominated for sound editing, sound mixing, production design, original score and original song, "All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
