Her American Airlines flight from California to Fort Walton Beach turned into a nightmarish weekend of flight delays, cancellations and intermittent sleep in airport terminals. She spent an extra night at DFW International Airport because of a delayed flight, then an extra day at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport on her return trip. When she got a ticket back home, her plane dripped water from an overhead leak until a fellow passenger stopped the leak with feminine pads. “The flight attendants didn’t care that water was dripping on me and I wasn’t getting off the plane because I had to start a new job the next day,” said Paine, a 28-year-old project developer recently hired at a commercial solar company. Cyprus’ Cobalt Air, Pakistan’s Shaheen Air, and Primera, based in Denmark and Latvia, collapsed in October. In February, Flybmi and Germania filed for bankruptcy. For most, rising fuel costs and overexpansion led to their demise. Budget airlines are appealing to travelers because they offer much lower prices than major airlines. The airline is holding a two-day sale to commemorate the new flights, with one-way tickets between the US mainland and Hawaii available for as low as $49. Tickets for flights within Hawaii are on sale for as low as $29. All sale tickets, for travel by June 19, must be purchased by 11:59 p.m. PT on Tuesday. Southwest Airlines is going to Hawaii.
