WASHINGTON — Both can be true: Bernie Sanders is running a better campaign than he did four years ago, and he's in worse shape to win the Democratic nomination than in 2016. The better campaign: Sanders has more aggressively worked on his shortcomings with African-American and Latino Democrats. And today he delivers a speech on why democratic socialism is the only way to defeat to oligarchy and authoritarianism (more on that below). But here's how he's in worse shape: He's one of some 20-plus Democrats running instead of Hillary Clinton's main competition. He and Elizabeth Warren are competing on much of the same turf (see Data Download below). The 2018 midterms proved that Democrats can win tough races without democratic socialism — look at Kyrsten Sinema in Arizona, or Gretchen Whitmer in Michigan or Abigail Spanberger in Virginia. And maybe most important of all, the Democratic memories about 2016 - the fights with the DNC, the chaos at the Philly convention, the dispute … [Read more...] about Bernie Sanders has upped his game, but does it matter?

By Andy Sullivan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Almost 500 former U.S. Justice Department officials said on Monday in a joint statement that the Mueller report's findings would justify obstruction charges against President Donald Trump if he were not currently occupying the White House. U.S. Attorney General William Barr has said he found insufficient evidence in Mueller's report to conclude that Trump obstructed justice. Special Counsel Robert Mueller himself made no formal finding one way or the other on that question. "To look at these facts and say that a prosecutor could not probably sustain a conviction for obstruction of justice ... runs counter to logic and our experience," said the statement, signed by Justice Department lawyers who served Republican and Democratic presidents stretching back to the 1950s. As of late Monday, 467 officials had signed the letter. Mueller's report unearthed numerous links between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and various Russians, but … [Read more...] about Mueller report justifies obstruction charges vs Trump
International media groups, journalists and rights advocates have scored the arrest of Maria Ressa, chief of Philippine news website Rappler, as they condemned the blow on press freedom. Renowned journalist Christiane Amanpour, formerly Ressa's colleague at international news network CNN, called the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte "desperate" in taking a journalist into custody. "You know a government is desperate when they arrest a journalist. President Duterte: FREE @mariaressa NOW," said Amanpour in a tweet Thursday night, hours after Ressa's arrest. Former United States Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said the Philippine government's act against Ressa, "a friend," must be condemned by the other democracies of the world. "The arrest of journalist @mariaressa by the Philippine government is outrageous and must be condemned by all democratic nations. I’m proud to call her a friend and to stand with her in defending the principles of a … [Read more...] about Amanpour, Albright, international groups hit Maria Ressa arrest
