Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As Gods: A Moral History of the Genetic Age is precisely what its title claims it to be. Biologist Matthew Cobb ( The Idea of the Brain) has examined both the potential and dangers of genetic engineering and has created a history of the world’s inept attempts to appropriately regulate the new science. As Gods functions as a warning, but not a hysterical one. As Cobb points out, humans have been changing nature since the dawn of agriculture. Since the 1953 discovery by James Watson and Francis Crick of the double helix structure of DNA (the stuff of genes), matters have gotten both more promising and more dicey than they were for thousands of years before. In 1972 at Stanford University, scientists successfully added a mammalian virus to DNA taken from the E. coli bacterium. “Recombinant DNA technology” has since taken off, altering medicine impressively, all the while conjuring up hellish images from Frankenstein … [Read more...] about Book Review – As Gods: A Moral History Of The Genetic Age By Matthew Cobb
The Los Angeles Rams are waving the white flag on their 2022 campaign. The Rams announced on Saturday that quarterback Matthew Stafford is being placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, which will likely put an end to his season. However, considering that the Rams are in last place in the NFC West standings and are all but eliminated from postseason contention already, it is very unlikely that Stafford will take another snap again this season. The Super Bowl winning quarterback has been in concussion protocol twice this season. The last time Stafford was seen on the field, he was removed from the Los Angeles’ 27-20 loss to the New Orleans Saints in week 11 during his first ballgame back from returning from a previous … [Read more...] about Matthew Stafford Heads To Injured Reserve With Neck Injury. A teenager in Oakdale, California saved his father’s life in November by lifting a truck off of him as they were working on it. After returning home late on a Monday night, Matthew Wilkinson needed to fix his work truck and so he asked his son to help him, a job they had done many times before Wilkinson told KCRA 3. Because the rotor was stuck, Wilkinson “couldn’t get a good angle,” so he went under the truck to hit it. The rotor came off, and the truck fell. America’s most hated Christmas candy is the Christmas Nougat. Chewy texture suggests to many a rich caramel or chocolate experience. Maybe the minty flavor is just at odds with what your brain expects. Brain-mouth dissonance?” The runner up is reindeer corn, followed by … [Read more...] about Survey: America’s Most Hated Christmas Candies
India will be hoping their key bowlers, Harshal Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal, are back to their best when the hosts take on Australia in the series-deciding third T20 International here on Sunday. India were able to plug the gaps in Nagpur to level the three-match series with a comprehensive win in the eight-over-a-side contest. But they will need their bowlers, especially Harshal and Chahal, to overcome their struggles ahead of the T20 World Cup. India had got off to an electric start in the last game with Axar Patel bowling a fiery two-over spell that included a couple of wickets but they are struggling at the back end of the innings. While Jasprit Bumrah is sure to carry the responsibility, senior seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s poor show at the death overs is a real concern. He struggled in the Asia Cup and in the opener against Australia. He was dropped for the second T20, perhaps, because skipper Rohit Sharma felt he needed only four bowlers for the eight overs but Bhuvneshwar’s … [Read more...] about Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal’s form in focus ahead of series decider against Australia
After winning a national championship, is it time for Georgia Head Coach Kirby Smart to make a change at quarterback for the future of his team? Last football season, the Georgia Bulldogs shocked the world by winning the national championship with a quarterback who started as a walk-on, Stetson Bennett. Bennett marched the University of Georgia to victory over Alabama , a team they hadn’t beaten since Matthew Stafford started for Georgia in 2007. Although this is a remarkable accomplishment, Bennett would not have come close to winning without Smart’s unmatched defense. Without players like Jordan Davis, Lewis Cine, Trayvon Walker and many more players drafted after the championship season, the Georgia season could have ended in utter disappointment. While Bennett is a great quarterback, he also had a lot of help from an offensive line that helped him make more plays and have more time in the pocket. Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A portrait of David Bowie taken in 1983. (Photo credit RALPH GATTI/AFP/Getty Images) David Bowie, a rock-n-roll icon and groundbreaking artist, passed away on Sunday at the age of 69. In a global outpouring of grief, mourners are remembering Bowie as a musical visionary, someone who was once hailed as "music's most exquisite artifact," and an artist who made a real difference to the lives of his fans. He was also, as it happens, a financial pioneer. In 1997, Bowie -- then the world's most valuable musician, worth an estimated $917 million -- became the first artist to package and securitize the rights to his future royalties. That year, Bowie struck a licensing deal with record company EMI for the 25 albums he recorded between 1969 and 1990. The deal allowed EMI to release these records and any related unreleased live or studio recordings over the following 15 years. But rather than slowly earn the … [Read more...] about David Bowie, Musical Visionary And Financial Pioneer? A Look Back At ‘Bowie Bonds’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin December kicked off with upbeat news that a record number of Americans went shopping over Thanksgiving weekend, starting with Black Friday and ending on Cyber Monday. “The numbers shattered NRF’s initial expectations by more than 30 million,” the National Retail Federation reported , adding that in-store shopping was up 17% from 2021. However, online shopping advanced “at a slower pace,” up only 2% year-over- year. Average holiday-related spending rose about 8% over the weekend, from $301 in 2021 to $325 this year. However, the push-pull of inflation and discounting, both of which are rampant this year, complicates the overall spending picture, NRF warned. With inflation running about 8% according to the Consumer Price Index, NRF CEO Matthew Shay cautioned against subtracting inflation from the spending numbers to conclude that inflation accounts for growth. “It’s not that simplistic,” he said in the press call. … [Read more...] about Be Skeptical About The Headlines On Black Friday Holiday Weekend Retail
So, 2022. There was a mountain of exceptional jazz-based expression released in the past year, and while I’ve heard a good deal of it, of course I didn’t absorb it all. And there are artists I admire whose music deserves to be heard, all of it, by as many “friendly experiencers” (to lift a phrase from the mighty Anthony Braxton) as possible. But some of these creatives release so much sound that it’s challenging to keep up. There are relentlessly brilliant musicians like saxophonist Ivo Perlman , whose new digital release, “Reed Rapture,” presents multiple hours of saxophone duets without a rhythm section. Is it compelling? You bet. Will I get a chance to listen to the whole shebang attentively before the end of this year? Not likely. These are the albums I actively enjoyed and returned to in 2022. But this thought hangs above my head as I write: This was the year Denver (and the rest of the world) lost trumpeter-educator-bandleader-excellent-human Ron Miles, an irreplaceable … [Read more...] about Favorite jazz albums of 2022 , plus a few local performances to look forward to
