Opinion: Why Putin puts his neighbor Georgia on edge
Lincoln Mitchell ( @LincolnMitchell ) teaches in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. His most recent book is "The Giants and Their City: Major League Baseball in San Francisco, 1976-1992." The opinions expressed here are his own. View more opinion at CNN. Tbilisi, Georgia (CNN) Upon arriving in Tbilisi, Georgia's capital, for the first time since the pandemic began, I dropped my bag off at my Airbnb, strolled out and noticed the words "F**k Putin" graffitied in English on my building. A few meters away, a similar sentiment was scrawled in Russian and not far from that, my friend pointed to the same phrase painted on the wall in Georgia's distinctive alphabet . Lincoln Mitchell This is a country where anti-Russia sentiment runs very strong today and signs of support for Ukraine are everywhere. On Rustaveli Avenue, Tbilisi's picturesque and bustling main drag, elderly women sat selling pins, flags, wristbands and other … [Read more...] about Opinion: Why Putin puts his neighbor Georgia on edge
Rupiah nears breach of support with palm oil ban hurting trade
- A + A (May 16): The rupiah risks weakening to its lowest level in almost two years as Indonesia’s ban on palm oil exports adds to headwinds from interest rate hikes in the US. The currency fell to a one-year low last week, despite an assurance from the central bank that it would stabilize the currency. Technical support at its April 2021 low is now in danger and a breach of this level would pave the way for a decline to its September 2020 low. Investors are watching for further export restrictions and rising demand for the dollar, said Divya Devesh, head of Asean and South-Asia FX research at Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore. He sees the rupiah depreciating to 14,800 to the greenback by the end of June, from 14,613 on Friday. Palm oil accounted for 1.5% of Indonesia’s gross domestic product in 2021 and the prohibition on shipments could cut US$2 billion from the nation’s exports for each month it stays in place, according to estimates from Goldman Sachs … [Read more...] about Rupiah nears breach of support with palm oil ban hurting trade
Hong Kong becomes world’s must-watch market
FOR global investors trying to the gauge the fallout from surging interest rates and slowing economic growth, Hong Kong is quickly emerging as a must-watch market. Perhaps nowhere else is as exposed to two of the biggest worries roiling global asset prices – the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) rapidly tightening monetary policy and China’s sputtering economy. While Hong Kong’s US$466bil (RM2 trillion) foreign-reserves stockpile and plentiful interbank liquidity suggest little chance of an imminent crisis, signs of financial stress are building. This week saw the city intervene to prop up its pegged currency for the first time since 2019. Its stock market has tumbled this year at one of the fastest rates globally. Home prices in the world’s least affordable property market are falling and signs of capital flight are multiplying, after portfolio outflows last year topped US$100bil (RM440bil) for only the second time since Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to China. “There’s a lot the city … [Read more...] about Hong Kong becomes world’s must-watch market
Technical View | Nifty forms Doji candle, weakness can resume on breach of 15,735
The Nifty ended on a positive note after six straight days of losses in a highly volatile session on May 16, with gains in auto and financial names lifting the market. Amid mixed Asian cues, the Nifty opened marginal higher and, extended gains as the day progressed and closed in on 16,000 but profit booking at higher levels dragged the index down. The Nifty closed at 15,842.30, up 60.10 points, or 0.38 percent, and formed a Doji candle on the daily scale. "For the last three trading sessions, the index is trying to defend its recent low of 15,735. Hence, as long as the Nifty sustains above the said low, the hopes of a pullback attempt from the bulls will remain alive, which will be confirmed on a close above 16,100 levels. In that scenario, a decent target of 16,400 can be expected," Mazhar Mohammad, Founder & Chief Market Strategist, Chartviewindia.in, said. As volatility has remained high, if the index breached 15,735 on a closing basis, weakness shall resume with a … [Read more...] about Technical View | Nifty forms Doji candle, weakness can resume on breach of 15,735
Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When the Covid-19 pandemic first hit, in March of 2020, colleges everywhere (including Johns Hopkins University, where I teach and conduct research) shut down and sent everyone home. Within two weeks, we switched all of our classes to Zoom. It was a remarkable pivot, and necessary at the time. But we’re now more than two years into the pandemic, and many colleges and universities are still holding classes on Zoom, or offering a Zoom option for students who want it. This has become, to put it bluntly, a disaster for students. The Chronicle of Higher Education published a lengthy article in April that surveyed faculty all over the country. It paints a grim picture: students are reporting mental health problems in record numbers, grades are low, and attendance is even lower. Depression is widespread. College life, it seems, is not good. Most universities returned to in-person classes this past fall, and some … [Read more...] about Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.
