You could argue that China recently pulled a loyalty check on Thailand, and you could argue that it got what it wants. After releasing a statement to Thailand regarding Taiwan, Thailand responded by saying it backs a One China Policy. The Chinese embassy in Thailand issued a statement following Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan. The statement read, quote “China is convinced that Thailand, as a friendly neighbour of China, will continue to uphold international justice, support China’s efforts to safeguard state sovereignty and territorial integrity, champion China’s great cause of reunification, and work with China to jointly maintain the peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the region.” Thailand responded, with Foreign Ministry spokesman ธานี แสงรัตน์ said saying quote “Thailand stands by the ‘One China’ policy. We do not wish to see any actions that would aggravate tensions and undermine peace and stability in the region. “We hope that all parties concerned … [Read more...] about Thailand News Today | Thai airlines told to avoid airspace over Taiwan

Bank of Thailand Hikes Benchmark Policy Rate By 25 Basis Points

August 12, 2022 by www.chiangraitimes.com

The Bank of Thailand raised the benchmark policy rate for the first time in more than three years. This signalling it would stick with measured moves going forward to fight inflation without derailing the economy’s recovery. On Wednesday, the bank’s monetary policy committee decided to increase the one-day repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 0.75%, as forecast by 24 of 27 economists in a Bloomberg survey. The remaining three had predicted a 50-basis-point hike. The rate was last increased in December 2018. According to the Bank of Thailand, the policy rate should be normalized to a level that is consistent with sustainable growth. “Normalizing monetary policy should be gradually and measuredly following growth and inflation outlooks.” The Central Bank raised rates Wednesday in response to months of discussion about raising them sooner rather than waiting until inflation rises above the target. August 2, 2022 by thethaiger.com

On Thursday, Thailand recorded its second case of monkeypox. In the second case, a Thai man in Bangkok suspects he caught the virus from a Belgian man who he had close relations with. However, the Ministry of Health suspects the Belgian man has already fled Thailand. A total of 18 people in contact with the Thai man all tested negative for the monkeypox virus. However, the Thai man says he suspects that a Belgian man he had sex with is the source of his infection. Officials have tried to track down the Belgian man to test him for the virus, but they can’t find him. He is suspected to have left the country already, said the Director-General of the Department of Disease Control Dr Opas Karnkawinpong. Thailand’s first case of monkeypox, recorded in a 27 year old Nigerian man in Phuket on July 18, also fled Thailand and was arrested in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on July 23. FDA says Thailand unaffected by contaminated Haagen-Dazs

August 13, 2022 by thethaiger.com

Ice cream lovers of Thailand can rest easy tonight, knowing that their Haagen-Dazs won’t kill them. The Thai Food and Drug Administration confirmed that none of the batches of cancer-linked contaminated ice cream discovered in other countries were imported to Thailand. Known for their high-quality premium ice cream, a recent batch of Haagan-Dazs was discovered in France with a less desirable ingredient – 2-Chloroethanol – a compound found in ethylene oxide. The chemical compound is used as a cleaning agent and pesticide but is known to be carcinogenic and damage DNA. The French first detected traces of the chemical last month and requested the EU’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed put out an alert to warn of the contaminant. After the alert, several European countries pulled the at-risk Haagen-Dazs stock from shelves and recalled them. General Mills, the American manufacturing company that owns the Haagen-Dazs brand, produced the suspect ice cream which has an expiry date … [Read more...] about FDA says Thailand unaffected by contaminated Haagen-Dazs
