Hong Kong's new Palace Museum, a gift from Beijing to marks 25th anniversary of the territory's return to Chinese rule, aims to engage the city's younger generation with Chinese culture, its director said recently. Spanning more than 30,000sq m, the museum showcases more than 900 artefacts on loan from Beijing's Palace Museum in the Forbidden City, including portraits from the Qing dynasty, calligraphy and ceramics. Of those, 166 works are considered "national treasures". "We need to promote the transmission and dissemination of Chinese culture," museum director Louis Ng said ahead of the museum's opening on July 2, a day after Hong Kong marks the anniversary of its handover from British to Chinese rule. "Especially for young people, we need to give them more opportunities to understand and appreciate Chinese culture." I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened
What makes A24 a cultural powerhouse is not that it released a film last spring in which an inter-dimensional assassin impales himself on an Auditor of the Month trophy, inexplicably shaped like a certain sex toy, although it most certainly did. It’s not that most cinephiles would immediately guess A24 as the company who put out that film, Everything Everywhere All at Once , even if its logo didn’t appear before the credits, although they probably would. No, what makes A24 a steady, sturdy phenomenon is that it started selling $60 designer candle replicas of that unlikely trophy just after the movie’s early-June digital release. advertisement advertisement Whether enough fans purchase the item—a collaboration with Brooklyn-based design studio, Joya —to justify its overhead cost is incidental. Everything Everywhere is now A24’s biggest hit ever , its $89 million box-office haul rendering the digital release a victory lap. The very existence … [Read more...] about I spent six weeks living in A24-world. Here’s what happened
See The Provocative Designers Who Might Be The Next Nobel Peace Prize Winners At The Cooper Hewitt Museum
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Joe Biden is unlikely to dine with Kim Jong-un anytime soon. If he did, he might enjoy naengmyeon with a side of oi muchim . If Biden were to sit down with Ebrahim Raisi of Iran on the other hand, they might share a plate of khoresht-e hulu . A meal with Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela? Chivo al coco con mofongo might be on the menu. Over a seven-year period starting in 2010, residents of Pittsburgh could enjoy all of these delicacies at a take-out restaurant known as Conflict Kitchen . The premise was stunningly simple: Seven days a week, the proprietors served traditional dishes from nation-states in conflict with the United States. From Palestine to Cuba to Afghanistan, they rotated menus based on current events. For most of the proffered cuisines, Conflict Kitchen was the only option within driving distance. Although Conflict Kitchen is no longer open – and Pittsburgh is no longer a prime destination for chivo … [Read more...] about See The Provocative Designers Who Might Be The Next Nobel Peace Prize Winners At The Cooper Hewitt Museum
Why Brandalism Has Become A Luxury Brand’s New Best Friend
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With the blueprint for luxury fashion retail sprouting unprecedented new contours - fueled both by streetwear’s freshly gilded edge and millennials’ disregard for heritage without innovation, edge or obvious purpose - it’s perhaps unsurprising that an appreciation of off-piste brand behavior is booming. From bastardized logos to rough and ready email marketing - galvanized by a coterie of potshot-taking Insta-famous artists that are even buddying up with the brands they satirize - subverting or dismantling formerly sacred brand codes is swiftly becoming a fast-track to modernity While a respect for heritage (as we traditionally know it) isn’t dead, it’s certainly no longer solely enough to satisfy younger, ‘digitally native’ luxury appetites, who according to a globally-reaching 2017 survey by Deloitte have more impulsive spending habits than ever before ( almost 20% buy simply to treat themselves ) and regard quality and … [Read more...] about Why Brandalism Has Become A Luxury Brand’s New Best Friend
Woman From India Leads As Winemaker At Beloved Napa Winery To Build A Better Tomorrow After Tragedy
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As the terrifying words and shocking photos showing fierce fires destroying thousands of acres of land flooded social media, it was hard to not feel helpless. The over 50 mph winds assisted the fire in covering so much ground in such a short time that people who thought they were out of harm’s way would quickly realize within the same hour that they needed to evacuate as soon as possible. The direction of the wind changed constantly making it impossible for anyone within Napa Valley and Sonoma County to know if they were truly safe, as fleeing one’s home had many downsides since temporarily living in a crowded community center seemed to be a torturous alternative, or much worse, one could accidentally drive into the heart of one of the fast and furious fires, trapped with no way out. Many living outside of northern California stayed glued to the internet to see if friends or colleagues in the wine industry were doing okay. … [Read more...] about Woman From India Leads As Winemaker At Beloved Napa Winery To Build A Better Tomorrow After Tragedy

The State of the Nation: Hospitality industry struggling to cope despite borders reopening, brighter prospects
This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 20, 2022 - June 26, 2022. - A + A DESPITE the reopening of borders since April 1, when Malaysia allowed quarantine-free travel for fully-vaccinated travellers into the country, it will be some time before the hotel industry regains a strong footing following the debilitating lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. In fact, it may well take another year at least before operators can operate at their full capacities at pre-pandemic levels, Malaysian Association of Hotel Owners (MAHO) president Tan Sri Teo Chiang Hong tells The Edge. “Average occupancy rates are an estimated 30% to 50% of pre-pandemic levels,” says Teo, who is owner and director of One World Hotel in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. He notes that resort destinations are seeing full occupancies while city hotels still face low occupancy. As at November 2020, a total of 204 tourism and hotel operators had shut down following the impact of the … [Read more...] about The State of the Nation: Hospitality industry struggling to cope despite borders reopening, brighter prospects
The State Of The Nation: What the Fed’s 75bps hike and near 4% terminal rate mean for the OPR
This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 20, 2022 - June 26, 2022. - A + A IF Bank Negara Malaysia’s eight-member monetary policy committee (MPC) raises the overnight policy rate (OPR) by 25 basis points (bps) at its next scheduled meeting on July 6, it will mark its first back-to-back increase since mid-2010, when interest rates were normalised following the recovery from the 2008 global financial crisis. It will not be the first central bank to do so. Compared with just a month ago, more economists now (at the time of writing) reckon that a 25bps hike will happen in July, but many still think a pause is possible in July ahead of the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebrations. In any case, at least one more rate increase (if not two) is expected to take place by the conclusion of the Sept 8 meeting to bring the OPR to at least 2.25% (if not 2.5%), consensus data show. “Our house has also shifted expectations for Bank Negara to frontload … [Read more...] about The State Of The Nation: What the Fed’s 75bps hike and near 4% terminal rate mean for the OPR
Bruised bitcoin due relief after crypto wipeout, charts show
- A + A (June 27): The wipeout in Bitcoin may have run its course, a range of technical indicators suggest. Momentum measures and insights from options bets signal ebbing selling pressure and a possible trading range of US$20,000 to US$25,000 — though the usual caveats apply about the mercurial nature of cryptocurrencies. The largest digital token has slumped about 70% from a November record and was little changed at US$21,343 as of 8:38 a.m. Monday in London. It slid below US$18,000 earlier this month, before retaking the closely watched US$20,000 level. Tightening monetary policy, withering speculative ardor and collapsing digital-asset projects have spurred a broad crypto rout in 2022. But the mood in global markets is turning less dour on tentative hopes that the price pressures driving interest-rate hikes may be cresting. The lessons of Bitcoin’s past swoons suggest it’s in the vicinity of its bear-market low, according to Glassnode. This “bear market is now … [Read more...] about Bruised bitcoin due relief after crypto wipeout, charts show
