NATO deputy chief ‘confident’ of finding consensus on Finland, Sweden membership
Mircea Geoana - A + A BERLIN (May 15): North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is confident that it can overcome objections by Turkey and quickly admit Finland and Sweden, its deputy chief said on Sunday, as the alliance prepares for a historic enlargement in the Nordic region prompted by Russia's war on Ukraine. In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees , and for good reason. Forests take up a large amount of the planet-warming carbon dioxide that people put into the atmosphere when they burn fossil fuels. But will trees keep up that pace as global temperatures rise? With companies increasingly investing in forests as offsets , saying it cancels out their continuing greenhouse gas emissions, that’s a multibillion-dollar question. advertisement advertisement The results of two studies published in the journals Science and Ecology Letters on May 12, 2022— one focused on growth , the other on death —raise new questions about how much the world can rely on forests to store increasing amounts of carbon in a warming future. Ecologist William Anderegg , who was involved in both studies, explains why. What does the new research tell us about trees and their ability to store carbon? The future of forests is on a … [Read more...] about In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
The next role Charo Santos-Concio wants to play
Charo Santos-Concio “I’m now focused on trying to understand the human mind better,” said Charo Santos-Concio, who, after retiring from corporate work, opted to revive her acting career and, at the same time, take on the role of an educator. Inquirer Entertainment asked the former CEO of ABS-CBN about the interests she is taking on and is enjoying now that she is no longer busy with office work. Kyiv residents call for iconic Soviet-era monuments to be renamed
Kyiv recently renamed an iconic Soviet-era arch symbolising ties with Moscow to "Arch of the Freedom of the Ukrainian People", the mayor said. The symbolic move comes after the city demolished a statue of two workers - one Russian and the other Ukrainian - under the arch last month. "The city council today decided to 'de-communise' the name of the Arch of the Friendship of the Peoples. It will now be the Arch of the Freedom of the Ukrainian People," the capital's mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram. He said officials had also "approved a list of more than 40 monuments and memorial plaques that will have to be removed from streets and buildings of the capital and transferred to a museum of totalitarianism." He said renaming them all would take time and involve "specialists", mainly historians, "so as not to take a hasty decision". The arch is an imposing 35m-high monument that towers over central Kyiv. It was erected in 1982. Many Kyiv residents have called for plaques … [Read more...] about Kyiv residents call for iconic Soviet-era monuments to be renamed
Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction. These Strategies Can Help
In my line of business, which involves the sale of drug testing kits, I run into many a sad story about how addiction has ruined lives and caused an immense amount of grief among people who get hooked on any number of substances, especially opioids . And while you may think I am talking about people who were born into poverty and were down on their luck and looking for an escape (and I've heard those stories, too), I'm not. I'm talking about people who have lived privileged lives, earned college degrees, started successful practices and followed their entrepreneurial dream. David J. Linden, professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, says there is some evidence that the traits that make a good entrepreneur also make one susceptible to addiction. It can also be a rather lonely road entrepreneurs walk as they get their businesses off the ground and that, coupled with a constant fear of failure hanging over their heads, may also lead to … [Read more...] about Some Traits That Make You a Good Entrepreneur Also Make You Susceptible to Addiction.
