The Pentagon said a proposed GOP defense budget cut back to fiscal year 2022 levels would be “potentially devastating,” according to a letter sent to Congress on March 17, released Monday. The defense budget could receive a cut of $73.7 billion from its current budget, and even more compared to the Biden administration’s request for fiscal year 2024 under House Majority Leader California Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s still unclear spending proposal, Department of Defense (DOD) comptroller Michael McCord wrote in the letter addressed to House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut. Such a deficit would cut a deep gash into the administration’s strategy to reinforce Pacific defense networks and improve military readiness, McCord argued. “Those who would propose deep cuts to our budget have a responsibility to describe those goals in our strategy they wish to abandon or scale back in the Indo-Pacific, Europe, in the homeland or elsewhere,” McCord wrote. … [Read more...] about ‘Potentially Devastating’: Pentagon Responds To Proposed GOP Defense Budget Cuts

After Collecting Millions From Wall Street, Janet Yellen Now Helps Decide Which Banks Get Bailouts
After raking in over $7 million in speaking fees from financial institutions in the two years before being confirmed, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen now plays a major role in determining which banks are systemically important, according to her testimony at a Senate Finance Committee hearing Thursday. Yellen had received more than $7 million in speaking fees from dozens of companies including Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citi, Credit Suisse, UBS, Charles Schwab and many more, according to Yellen’s public financial disclosure report. Though the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to $250,000, Yellen told the senators the government may insure additional deposits, as it did at the recently failed Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank, if that bank’s failure would present a “systemic risk” to the economy. WASHINGTON, DC – MARCH 16: U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen testifies about the Biden Administration’s FY2024 federal budget proposal before … [Read more...] about After Collecting Millions From Wall Street, Janet Yellen Now Helps Decide Which Banks Get Bailouts

Coinbase Is Considering Diversifying Its Regulatory Risk By Moving A Trading Unit Outside Of The U.S.
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Coinbase, a leading United States-based cryptocurrency exchange, is considering diversifying its risk by establishing a trading platform in another country, according to Bloomberg . The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit in the Division of Enforcement plans to grow its division to about 50 dedicated positions from 30 white-collar regulatory officials. The new headcount will be tasked with investigating, auditing, examining and potentially prosecuting securities law violations related to crypto-related products and trading activities. In the wake of the spectacular implosion of crypto exchange FTX, led by its now-disgraced founder Sam Bankman-Fried, followed by the shuttering of crypto-friendly Silvergate Bank and Signature Bank and somewhat adjacent Silicon Valley Bank, it looks like the SEC is planning to vigorously scrutinize this sector more closely. If digital asset companies … [Read more...] about Coinbase Is Considering Diversifying Its Regulatory Risk By Moving A Trading Unit Outside Of The U.S.
Are The Superrich More Burdened And Paying The Highest Tax Rates?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The 27,000 Americans with more than $10 million of income have lower average federal income tax rates than the 580,000 Americans with income between $1 million and $10 million. And though the share of federal income tax revenue from taxpayers with income in the top percentile rose from 33.2 percent in 2001 to 42.3 percent in 2020, that doesn’t mean the affluent are more oppressed or less well off. That’s because over the two decades spanning 2001 through 2020, their share of total before-tax income has risen, and their average effective income tax rate has declined. Those observations, and others discussed below, add important context to — and counter the thrust of — assertions by the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal . First, about the income tax code, the board noted: “There is no denying that it is steeply progressive.” And second, it said, “The trend over the past two decades is that the income tax burden has … [Read more...] about Are The Superrich More Burdened And Paying The Highest Tax Rates?

What Biden’s ESG Bill Veto Means For Your Retirement
As promised, President Joe Biden vetoed an attempt by House and Senate Republicans to strike down the Department of Labor's (DOL's) ESG rule Monday. "I just signed this veto because the legislation passed by the Congress would put at risk the retirement savings of individuals across the country," Biden said in a video posted on Twitter. "They couldn't take into consideration investments that would be impacted by climate, impacted by overpaying executives and that's why I decided to veto it." The rule allows ERISA retirement plan fiduciaries to consider environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors when making investments or creating offerings. It will remain in effect, barring a 2/3 majority vote to override the veto, which is considered highly unlikely. Key Takeaways Biden's veto of Congressional legislation striking down the new ESG rule means the rule remains in place, barring a 2/3 majority override by Congress. The new rule retains core fiduciary … [Read more...] about What Biden’s ESG Bill Veto Means For Your Retirement
Human Resources And Recruiters Are Getting Axed
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A year ago, a study conducted by Workvivo , an employee experience engagement app, highlighted the challenges human resources professionals had to contend with at the time. The study surveyed more than 520 HR professionals in the United States and the U.K. on burnout in the HR department. Ninety-eight percent of HR professionals self-reported that they were experiencing burnout, while 94% said they felt overwhelmed and 88% of respondents said they dreaded work. As a result of workplace transformations, HR navigated in-office, remote and hybrid work styles. They contended with the Great Resignation, sourcing, recruiting, onboarding and retaining workers. The war for talent took its toll, as HR professionals felt undervalued and under-resourced. Human resources professionals are, once again, experiencing stress and anxiety, but this time for a different reason. Instead of being exhausted from all the hiring, HR, … [Read more...] about Human Resources And Recruiters Are Getting Axed
