SUBSCRIBE March 27, 2019, 6:37 PM GMT By Alyssa Newcomb When Apple announced its own subscription service this week, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Arcade, many people thought: “Great, more subscription services to add to the monthly tab.” Nearly half of consumers in the United States said they are frustrated by the number of subscriptions and services they need to have in order to watch the shows they want, according to Deloitte’s annual Digital Media Trends survey. However, the average consumer still subscribes to three video streaming services, according to the survey. And the complaints about subscription malaise are abundant on Twitter. Apple News+ will cost $9.99 per month. The company hasn’t released details on pricing regarding its other new subscriptions. Signing up for a subscription is a familiar process. Apple says its News app is already the category leader in the App Store, and today it announced a new subscription service called “News+” that includes 300 magazines, as well as the L.A. Times and the Wall Street Journal. Notably missing from the service, however, are the New York Times, and the Washington Post. However, one analyst told me that there’s a good chance those publications will be added later. The magazine section of the News+ service goes heavy on the art and photography. In the app, a Today tab contains curated recommendations for magazines and articles. The News+ contains a broader look at all the magazines available. A Following tabs contains the user’s favorite magazines, and recent content from those titles. The magazine articles feature prominent cover art, with the full table of contents underneath. The News+ subscription is available today inside the regular Apple News app via an update to the app. … [Read more...] about Apple unveils “Apple News+” news and magazine subscription service
By Patience Haggin WSJ Mon., March 4, 2019 Taboola Inc., the “content recommendation” engine best known for placing sponsored links on publishers’ websites to other content across the web, is acquiring an Israeli team to bolster its young news recommendation service for users of Android phones. The company is buying Start Magazine, a similar news service that partners with cellular carriers, from Herzliya, Israel-based Celltick Technologies Ltd., Taboola said. The acquisition will broaden Taboola News’ reach through Start’s carrier partnerships that place it on some 20 million devices. The Start service itself will cease to exist, though Taboola will absorb its staff of roughly … [Read more...] about Taboola Makes Acquisition to Bolster Its Take on Apple News
Apple is a company known for protecting its users’ privacy fiercely, but it turns out Apple’s strict privacy and data collection policies may be hurting the revenue the company and publishers can collect via its Apple News platform. That’s according to a report from Digiday: Today, publishers are still having trouble selling their Apple News [ad] inventory directly, sources said. Three [publishers] cited Apple News’ limited user targeting, which doesn’t allow the use of third-party data or IP addresses, as reasons for them being unable to sell a meaningful amount of ads on Apple News. Matter of fact, of the publications Digiday spoke with, one said it earned less than $1,000 per month in ad revenue from Apple News. That’s pretty shocking considering Apple News has roughly 90 million regular users, according to the New York Times. This puts Apple, publishers, and users in a bit of a conundrum. I’m a huge fan of the Apple News app. It easily … [Read more...] about Apple’s privacy stance is making it hard for publishers to make money from Apple News
By The Canadian Press Fri., Jan. 25, 2019 TORONTO - Apple Inc. will debut its Apple News app in Canada early next week, after years of operating in the U.S. and a handful of other countries. The U.S.-based tech giant’s iOS and macOS app, which curates news based on a user’s interests, will launch with English and French content from publications including CBC, Radio Canada, La Presse, CTV News, the Toronto Star, Hockey News, the Walrus and Global News, but will eventually grow to include stories from other publications. Publications will keep 100 per cent of the revenue from ads they sell in Apple News, but will give up a slice of the revenue they make from subscriptions on the platform. According to a developer page on Apple’s website, publications will keep 70 per cent of revenues in the first year of a new subscription. If that subscriber hangs on past a year, the publication’s net revenue will increase to 85 per cent of the subscription … [Read more...] about Apple News coming to Canada next week after developer debut this week
