Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Abortion rights advocates and providers asked the Florida Supreme Court to decide whether the state’s 15-week abortion ban should be blocked in court, after an appeals court allowed the ban to stay in effect—the first test of whether the court will overturn its decades-old precedent protecting abortion rights and let the state enact harsher bans. Key Facts The American Civil Liberties Union, Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers asked the Florida Supreme Court to consider a July ruling from a state appeals court, which allowed the ban to remain in effect as the litigation moves forward and denied a request to fast-track the case to the Supreme Court. The plaintiffs said the Florida Supreme Court has jurisdiction to review the ruling because it directly conflicts with its own precedent, as the state’s highest court ruled in 1989 that the Florida Constitution and its right to privacy protects … [Read more...] about Florida Supreme Court Asked To Consider Blocking 15-Week Abortion Ban After Appeals Court Lets It Stay In Place

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The California Court of Appeals has upheld a whopping verdict against Roundup. In 2018, jurors awarded $289 million to a man they say got cancer from Roundup weedkiller . Plaintiff Dewayne Johnson was awarded $39 million in compensatory damages, and $250 million in punitive damages. Later, the Judge reduced the $250 million punitive verdict to just under $40 million That left Mr. Johnson slated to collect $78.5 million, about half compensatory and half punitive damages. But Bayer, which now owns Roundup, appealed. The appeals court refused to reverse the decision, but it did slash the damages again. The court denied Monsanto/Bayer’s motion for a new trial on condition that Johnson accept a settlement of $10.2 million in compensatory damages, plus the same amount in punitive damages. The appeal is still a win for plaintiffs, and it may influence even more suits. There are already vast numbers of cases. This company is putting its high-quality olive oils in Sriracha-style bottles
Graza cofounder Andrew Benin doesn’t want you to be precious about his brand’s extra-virgin olive oil, but he does want you to appreciate it. Since launching in January, Graza has been winning people over with its playful squirt-bottle packaging, and turning them into loyal fans with the quality of the oil inside. advertisement advertisement Graza’s cleverly named duo of extra-virgin olive oils—Sizzle, for cooking, and Drizzle, for finishing—come in packaging that stands out amid the usual green-hued glass bottles. Both Sizzle’s tall, 750-ml bottle and Drizzle’s more squat 500-ml bottle are made of matte green plastic with a tip that looks like it was stolen from a bottle of Sriracha. And while it’s a differentiator, the packaging is only the beginning for Graza . The oil is the real star. Both Sizzle and Drizzle are sourced from Andalusian Picual olives. The ones that are picked and pressed for Drizzle are young and green, while the ones used … [Read more...] about This company is putting its high-quality olive oils in Sriracha-style bottles
This simple, stylish digital picture frame has replaced social media in my life
I’ve long lusted over Samsung’s gorgeous Frame TV , which doubles as a digital picture frame with access to more than 1,400 works of art. The prospect of having the entirety of public domain hanging in my living room is endlessly appealing. So when Aura Frames , a 10-year-old, New York-based company that makes easy-to-use, smart digital photo frames, asked to send me a sample of their Mason Luxe model, I thought it might be the next best thing. I never anticipated it’d be my favorite item in my kitchen. advertisement advertisement The Aura Mason Luxe is one of the brand’s five models; at $250, it’s the midpoint in their price range. ( Aura frames start at $180 and go up to $400.) My only previous experience with a digital frame is one I bought for my grandmother more than a decade ago that eventually became a high(ish)-tech paperweight when SD cards turned into a hassle. But to call the Aura similar to that antiquated model is a disservice, as … [Read more...] about This simple, stylish digital picture frame has replaced social media in my life
Trouble in paradise: ‘House of the Dragon’ showrunners on the Targaryens’ generational war
Milly Alcock in “House of the Dragon” As they say, the past is never where you think you left it. But that’s exactly where the creators of HBO’s “House of the Dragon” (HOTD), the eagerly anticipated prequel of “Game of Thrones” (GoT), wish to take its viewers—a monumental task that is as exciting as it is ambitious. Long before the Starks and the Lannisters found themselves fighting tooth and nail over power, birth right and survival, it was the House Targaryen that once ruled all Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros. And why not? The Targaryens are mystical people with magic in their blood, so why shouldn’t anybody with the ability to control dragons be allowed to sit on the Iron Throne at King’s Landing? Last week, we spoke to HOTD’s showrunners, writer-cocreator Ryan Condal and director Miguel Sapochnik, in a roundtable interview to discuss the 10-episode series. “House of the Dragon”, which launches on HBO Go on Aug. 22, is based on author George RR Martin’s “Fire … [Read more...] about Trouble in paradise: ‘House of the Dragon’ showrunners on the Targaryens’ generational war

China Walks Back Promise Not To Use Force In Taiwan ‘Reunification’
The Chinese government issued an official document Wednesday that removes a previous pledge not to use force should China move forward with Taiwan “reunification.” China promised in two previous white papers, published in 1993 and 2000, that it “will not send troops or administrative personnel to be based in Taiwan” after reuniting the self-governing island with mainland China, a goal China openly pursues, Reuters reported . The updated document, “The Taiwan Question and China’s Reunification in the New Era” under President Xi Jinping, omits that clause, instead advocating for a peaceful reunification but creating the possibility for use of military force as a last resort. “National reunification by peaceful means is the first choice of the CPC and the Chinese government in resolving the Taiwan question, as it best serves the interests of the Chinese nation as a whole, including our compatriots in Taiwan, and it works best for the long-term stability and development of China,” … [Read more...] about China Walks Back Promise Not To Use Force In Taiwan ‘Reunification’
