Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2020, Harish Kolli, a high school junior from Austin, Texas, was scrolling through TikTok when he came across a viral trend. The viral TikTok trend encouraged women to save videos with fake conversations to use when feeling unsafe (for example: when feeling uncomfortable in an Uber). These videos would have a person talking to you as if they knew you and were expecting to see you soon in order to dissuade potential harassers. Kolli later realized that what made the videos so popular and beneficial was their preventative and discreet nature. More than 80% of harassment crimes are committed by someone the recipient knows, so people often don’t feel comfortable calling the police or using deterrents such as pepper spray. Understanding just how important these underlying concepts are, Harish decided to create an improved, user-friendly solution that deters harassers before they escalate their behavior. Not long after, he met … [Read more...] about How A Teen Entrepreneur Created A Personal Safety App For Women

Microsoft Edge Is Now More Popular Than Apple Safari…And Other Small Business Tech News This Week
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Here are five things in technology that happened this past week and how they affect your business. Did you miss them? 1- Microsoft's desktop browser - Microsoft Edge - is more popular for users than Safari. Microsoft Edge has become the second most popular desktop browser, surpassing Safari according to an analysis done by Statcounter. This increase in the platform may suggest that Mac users are using Safari less frequently due to new design updates that dissuaded many users. The increase could also suggest a rise in Windows users-however-Google Chrome still has a 50 percent lead on the rising platform. (Source: 9to5mac ) Why this is important for your business: Never underestimate the power of Microsoft. Although Chrome still remains the leader by far, it's clear that Edge has become the next best alternative. As usage grows, I expect to see Edge becoming a more recommended browser for applications going … [Read more...] about Microsoft Edge Is Now More Popular Than Apple Safari…And Other Small Business Tech News This Week
A Lack Of Consumer Portability And Choice Are Negatively Affecting The Mobile Experience
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The process of transitioning between mobile app ecosystems can be excruciating. In many cases, these ecosystems were explicitly designed to limit interoperability and portability. Messaging services are one of the greatest challenges along with payments, cloud storage, apps and wearables which also limit user portability between platforms. There are many different mobile ecosystems available today, with varying approaches to user data. Ultimately, Moor Insights & Strategy believes that openness and interoperability enable competition and consumer choice, which drives the industry forward towards better products and consumer experiences. In this brief, the first in a two-part series, we’ll examine the different approaches—how they limit consumer choice and the ability to move freely between ecosystems, and how this affects others. We’ll also explore possible solutions to what we perceive to be the most significant … [Read more...] about A Lack Of Consumer Portability And Choice Are Negatively Affecting The Mobile Experience
Everything-As-A-Service: Why All Brands Must Consider Subscription Models
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the biggest business trends around, I believe the subscription and servitization model will shape the businesses of the future. Let's delve into what this trend means in practice and explore some brief examples of companies that have embraced this business model. The “as a service” revolution Apple is a great example of a company that has transitioned from a straightforward product manufacturer to a subscription-based business – via services like Apple News, Apple TV, and Apple Music. This trend is something I’m seeing across all markets now, probably because it presents such an exciting business opportunity. In fact, research shows that subscription businesses achieve five times faster revenue growth than the S&P 500. A subscription or servitization business can be defined as any business that sells its products or services on a scheduled basis (such as monthly). In essence, then, this trend is all … [Read more...] about Everything-As-A-Service: Why All Brands Must Consider Subscription Models
iPod discontinued: Memories of a shiny Nano that seemed too small to do everything that it promised
Over the years, there have been many versions of the iPod—Mini (in 2004), Shuffle and Nano (since 2005), Touch and Classic (since 2007)—but they have been gradually phased out by the company. (Image: Aegon Boucicault via Unsplash) It fit easily in the palm of my hand; this shiny black thingamajig that seemed too light, too small, too simple to do everything that it promised. Yet, the iPod Nano that I got in 2005, the first version of that model, changed the way I consumed music. The iPod transformed music for many people, particularly for my generation—growing up in the '80s and '90s—that graduated from turntables, to cassettes and CDs before discovering music that could be downloaded. I was a student in the US then, homesick at times when my sister gifted me the Nano, my name embossed in the silver metallic back. It bothered me intensely to cover up that impressive piece of tech and design in a mauve-coloured skin, which would protect it when dropped and came with a clasp that … [Read more...] about iPod discontinued: Memories of a shiny Nano that seemed too small to do everything that it promised
Over All Overalls, SAP Cleans Up Sustainable Supply Chains
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The planet runs on warehouses. Whether we like globalization or not, a huge number of our goods and supporting service items spend an inevitable amount of time somewhere in a warehouse, usually on a wooden palette, moved around by a forklift truck and typically covered in some form of protective plastic coating. The people that shift our goods around inside these facilities usually wear overalls or some form of one-piece jumpsuit type garment designed to protect them. These people are the frontline of modern supply chains and we need to care about them. While we can provide good working conditions, competitive salaries and wellbeing support services to make our supply chain backbone workers' lives better, we can also clearly now use technology to improve the way these systems run. People & planet German softwarehaus SAP used its annual Sapphire user convention this year to focus on this aspect of the world economy … [Read more...] about Over All Overalls, SAP Cleans Up Sustainable Supply Chains

- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (May 15): As the only second external chief executive officer in Faber-Castell’s company history, Stefan Leitz was thrown into the deep end when he was appointed just as the Covid-19 pandemic kicked off. Armed with a background in the fast-moving consumer goods industry, he managed to guide the stationery company through the big hurdle. On his first official visit to Malaysia since joining Faber-Castell, Leitz said that his focus is to get to know the team, especially as localisation — listening to individual market needs and paying attention to the know-how of the team in the market — is a key goal. True to the essence and history of the stationery brand, he also emphasised the importance of sustainability to both the environment and community. “Many companies talk about sustainability, but you hardly find a company that is so deeply rooted in it, and this makes me proud,” he said. Also in this issue is a behind-the-scenes look at the newly … [Read more...] about Business of colour
Rejuvenation key to building sustainability
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (May 15): Paramount Property Development Sdn Bhd is not afraid to do the unconventional with its latest project — the 20-storey The Atrium — which was formerly known as Ambassador Row Hotel Suites by Lanson Place in Jalan Ampang here. It decided to keep the structure, but replace the mechanical and electrical systems and piping, the lift system and the façade. Chief executive officer (property division) Chee Siew Pin — who recently took the helm at the company — said such a move helps reduce the carbon footprint. The Atrium, which has a gross development value of RM212 million, offers 241 serviced apartments on a 0.95-acre (0.38-hectare) plot. It is also competitively priced from RM1,010 psf. Read more about it in The Edge Malaysia weekly’s May 16 edition. Save by subscribing to us for your print and/or digital copy. Tips For Starting Up Today
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Carl Rodrigues is President, CEO and Founder at SOTI , a trusted provider of mobile and IoT management solutions. Recently, I was asked how I'd start up if I was starting today. There are tech hubs all over the world now; Nairobi alone has more than 20 of them. I could build a team of all-stars from Turkey, São Paulo and Singapore and beyond — but I probably wouldn't. It's not just a myth — there really is magic in the garage. There's something special in the "garage" approach, something magical in that battle. We started SOTI in a cramped basement. I'd blurt out a half-baked idea, someone would riff off it, and seconds later, we'd be whiteboarding an exciting new idea into the world. There was no process, and that was the process. It was similar to the Beatles' Let It Be documentary, as talented people worked closely together. I'm not saying you can't collaborate online. We're now a global … [Read more...] about Tips For Starting Up Today
The Growing Global Movement For Fair Cost Recovery On Broadband Networks
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The pandemic has exposed inequality of those who lack broadband, connected devices and digital skills to work, learn, and receive healthcare online. Policy research has emerged to study why broadband infrastructure and adoption shortfalls remain in a multi-trillion market. The short answer is a lack of business models. More largely, broadband policy has been slow to evolve, and the largest and richest internet platforms have lobbied to insulate themselves from financial obligations for universal access. Admittedly the notions of universal access differ across time and country and can be addressed in different ways. Presently the costs of connectivity are borne by end users and broadband providers, and yet, a class of companies profit disproportionately from the internet but do not contribute to the cost recovery of middle and last mile networks. Notably tech companies like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Amazon, Apple, and … [Read more...] about The Growing Global Movement For Fair Cost Recovery On Broadband Networks
