Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline More than 70 anti-abortion rights groups called on state lawmakers Thursday to reject abortion bans that would make getting the procedure a felony, saying in an open letter such measures are “not pro-life,” as the anti-abortion movement tries to navigate what bans on the procedure should look like if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade as expected. Key Facts The letter, addressed to “all state legislators in the United States of America,” directs lawmakers to “reject any measure” that would criminalize those who get abortions, calling them “antithetical” to the groups’ mission. The organizations argued “women are victims of abortion” and should receive counseling and support after getting the procedure, due to the possibility of post-abortion trauma. The anti-abortion rights groups still support criminalizing abortion providers performing the procedure, as many states intend to do if Roe is … [Read more...] about Anti-Abortion Groups Warn Lawmakers Against Criminalizing Having An Abortion

Pfizer’s Covid Vaccine Protection Against Omicron Fades Just Weeks After Second And Third Doses, Study Finds
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Immunity against the omicron coronavirus variant fades rapidly after a second and third dose of Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine, according to peer reviewed research published in JAMA Network Open on Friday , a finding that could support rolling out additional booster shots to vulnerable people as the variant drives an uptick in new cases across the country. Key Facts Levels of omicron-specific “neutralizing” antibodies—which can target the virus and stop it from replicating—decline rapidly after a second and third dose of Pfizer’s shot, according to the Danish study of 128 people who had received two or three doses. Antibody levels, which are associated with protection against infection and disease, fell within weeks of getting the shots and were much lower than the level of antibodies specific to the original and delta coronavirus variants, the researchers said. Indonesia to vaccinate herds as foot-and-mouth hits provinces
JAKARTA, May 14 (Bloomberg): Indonesia, which eradicated the foot-and-mouth disease in cattle in the 1970s, is producing its own vaccine for cattle to halt an outbreak that has spread to six regencies in Aceh and East Java provinces. The virus that infected thousands of cattle has been identified as stereotype O of IND2001, a strain that is common in the South-East Asian region, Agriculture Minister Syahrul Yasin Limpo said in a virtual briefing on Wednesday. The local vaccines are currently in production and should be ready within 20 days, said Limpo. In the meantime, the government will use imported vaccines on infected livestock, he said, without giving details of the shots. The outbreak, which hit during the religious Eid festivities, could boost Indonesia’s imports of beef that the government forecast will reach 193,223 tons this year. Beef produced in the country with the world’s largest Muslim population can only meet about 70% of its annual consumption. The rest is … [Read more...] about Indonesia to vaccinate herds as foot-and-mouth hits provinces

Omicron infection turbo-charges vaccinated people’s immunity: study
A Covid-19 testing and vaccination site is open on a Brooklyn street on April 18, 2022 in New York City, US. (AFP file photo) People who are vaccinated and then get infected with Omicron may be primed to overcome a broad range of coronavirus variants, early research suggests. A pair of studies showed that infection produced even better immune responses than a booster shot in vaccinated patients. Teams from Covid-19 vaccine maker BioNTech SE and the University of Washington posted the results on preprint server bioRxiv in recent weeks. The findings offer a reassuring sign that the millions of vaccinated people who’ve caught Omicron probably won’t become seriously ill from another variant soon -- even though the research needs to be confirmed, especially by real-world evidence. “We should think about breakthrough infections as essentially equivalent to another dose of vaccine,” said John Wherry, a professor and director of the Institute for Immunology at the University of … [Read more...] about Omicron infection turbo-charges vaccinated people’s immunity: study
