Here at Glassdoor, we preach that following up with every candidate who applies to your company–whether you’re going to hire them or not–is a crucial part of your recruitment process. But why? Is it really that important? advertisement advertisement We dug deeper into this best practice to see what following up with candidates really says about your organization and if it’s worth taking the extra step. Following up with candidates is the action of responding or replying to them during the interview process. This is typically done before and after the interview when you set up interview times, answer any questions relative to the company/position, or inform the candidate on whether or not they were hired. Here are five reasons why we believe candidate follow-up is critically important after interviews. 1. Candidate follow-up up after an interview closes the loop When you’re applying to jobs, the worst feeling in the world is uncertainty. Anti harassment policies for the workplace an employers guide
The trolls are teaming up—and tech platforms aren’t doing enough to stop them
What do trans women gamers, Jewish journalists, academics of color, and feminist writers have in common? All of them could find themselves targets of coordinated harassment campaigns simply because they have a presence online. advertisement advertisement Take the story of Trista (all names have been changed to protect privacy), a trans woman gamer. When she began streaming her games on Twitch, bands of harassers arrived en masse to jam up her channel with what she called “low effort, hateful memes.” Another woman gamer was called an “eBeggar,” the misogynistic gaming equivalent of “gold diggers.” On 4Chan, where harassers organized their attacks, posters organized “raids” of “SJWs” (or “social justice warriors”) against gamers like Trista, planning to “post many swasticas” [sic] and hurl ableist insults to threaten and belittle them. Or take the story of Keith, a white Jewish man, comedian, … [Read more...] about The trolls are teaming up—and tech platforms aren’t doing enough to stop them
75% of staff at this successful IT company are on the autism spectrum
Things started to click into place for Jamie Davila after she discovered she was on the autism spectrum five years ago this summer. advertisement advertisement She had already worked in accounting for more than a decade before starting her own website development business but struggled in traditional workplace settings. Not only was … [Read more...] about 75% of staff at this successful IT company are on the autism spectrum
The modeling industry is filled with exploitation—this labor activist is fighting back
In her two decades as a professional model—appearing in campaigns for designers such as Stella McCartney and Tommy Hilfiger—Sara Ziff has seen the industry’s glamorous side and its underbelly, which is rife with child labor, low wages, and sexual harassment. Model Alliance, the nonprofit she founded in 2012, advocates for fair labor standards and safer workplaces for models. Under Ziff, the alliance has pushed lawmakers in New York and California to protect underage models, partnered with researchers to study human trafficking and other issues, and launched a high-profile campaign—signed by close to 140 models—to get Victoria’s Secret to commit to safeguarding its models from sexual misconduct. Here, she talks about how modeling agencies have enabled the likes of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein, and why the exploitation of models should concern us all. advertisement advertisement Fast Company: Modeling has always seemed so aspirational. … [Read more...] about The modeling industry is filled with exploitation—this labor activist is fighting back
I don’t have a retirement plan, and I don’t care
When I tell people, particularly older people, that I’m a freelance journalist, I can tell by the look on their face that many are thinking the same thing, though few are bold enough to say it: “What about retirement?” advertisement advertisement I have to admit that question used to give me a lot of anxiety. The reality is that I don’t have a retirement plan, no 401(k), pension plan, or employer-matched contributions. But I’ve come to the conclusion that I don’t care—or at least I don’t need to. Since the term “retirement” was popularized in the U.S. in the mid-1800s, it’s become part of a trade-off that most now accept as the natural progression of life. If you work your butt off for 50 years or so, you should have enough money to never work again by the time you reach old age. Work is no longer a race to the finish line But there are a few problems with that proposition, at least from the perspective of a … [Read more...] about I don’t have a retirement plan, and I don’t care
