Now that ‘Roe’ has been overturned, it’s up to the tech industry to protect our data

June 29, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Roe v. Wade is no more, but this is not 1972, the year before it was passed. In some ways, it’s even worse. advertisement advertisement When the Supreme Court ruled last week that banning abortion is not unconstitutional, abortion immediately became illegal in several states with “trigger laws” primed to take effect with just such a ruling. It’s about to become illegal in several more states in which previously passed laws restricting abortion had been blocked by federal courts. Millions of people are about to lose access to safe, legal abortions, and those who provide abortion access or support will face consequences ranging from civil suits to arrest in some states. These are grim times for abortion access. And the forecast is even more grim because we now live in an era of unprecedented digital surveillance. I’ve spent most of my career helping to protect activists and journalists in authoritarian countries, where it is often wise to think … [Read more...] about Now that ‘Roe’ has been overturned, it’s up to the tech industry to protect our data

Ongkili: PBS to continue pushing for anti-hopping law

June 30, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) will continue to push for the passing of the anti-hopping Bill as it has been a party that values honourable politics since its inception, says Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili ( pic ). The PBS president said although they had been in and out of the government and was also once an opposition party, it had never accepted "frogs" (party hoppers) before. “PBS has been against party hopping and will continue to push for the law to be passed and we hope our counterparts will also support it,” he said. Ongkili said there have been too many leaders who left PBS for their own gain and if the law was passed, it will make things difficult for those who want to switch allegiances. The push for the Bill was among several resolutions from the ongoing PBS Congress here on Thursday (June 30). The other resolutions were to continue pushing for state rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), protect the natives of Sabah, stop the influx of … [Read more...] about Ongkili: PBS to continue pushing for anti-hopping law

Oakland Museum Of California Will Host ‘Hella Feminist’ Exhibit

June 30, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Riot girl summer is just kicking off, and Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) is on board with the movement. A new exhibition, “Hella Feminist” will feature newly commissioned artwork, interactive elements, and never-before-exhibited historical objects and artifacts from the museum’s collection. The exhibit will open on July 29 and explore the lesser known stories of feminism in the Bay Area and beyond. Designed as a response to the current moment, Hella Feminist is rooted in the idea that discrimination against all elements of identity (gender, class, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, education, age, etc.) is interlinked and that no element can be addressed alone. Posters, pins, photographs and more illustrating the feminist movement’s rise and shifts will be on display. The exhibition will highlight the spectrum of feminist actions, from the political movements shifting national policy, to the everyday … [Read more...] about Oakland Museum Of California Will Host ‘Hella Feminist’ Exhibit

Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever

June 30, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A (June 30): It was an unusually frigid December weekend when Cheng Wei summoned his inner circle to his Beijing office. The founder of Didi Global Inc, dressed entirely in black, told his lieutenants to slash spending by a fifth in 2022 and begin layoffs after staff return from Lunar New Year vacations. He delivered his bombshell flanked by a giant Powerpoint slide that read: “Don’t live with illusions. Face reality.” “We had a tough year,” said the reserved billionaire known as Will, who that day seemed even gloomier than normal, according to people briefed on the gathering. “But next year will be even tougher.” That sombre gathering encapsulated what many in the room already suspected — the ride-hailing champion once feted for running Uber Technologies Inc out of China was no more. In its place was a defeated shell worth a fifth of its value at the peak, bleeding users, blocked from raising funds for cherished projects — and whose executives were constantly … [Read more...] about Inside Didi’s US$60b crash that changed China tech forever

ESG fund launches in doubt as anti-greenwash rules hit industry

July 1, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

Bloomberg filepix for illustration purpose only - A + A COPENHAGEN (June 30): Investment managers are likely to hold back from introducing more ESG funds, as they try to gauge the risks posed by the new regulatory environment, according to Europe’s biggest fund association. “I sense that we will observe a pause in the launch or repurposing of funds, pending further regulatory developments,” Marc-Andre Bechet, deputy director of the Association of the Luxembourg Fund Industry, told Bloomberg . That’s despite “pressure from distributors and intermediaries” to provide more sustainable products, he said. The assessment follows a shift in the regulatory landscape around environmental, social and governance investing since the police raid on the offices of Deutsche Bank AG and its fund unit DWS Group in late May. Despite the absence of clear rules, lawyers advising ESG fund managers have warned that regulators seem to be preparing for a wider crackdown. A slowdown … [Read more...] about ESG fund launches in doubt as anti-greenwash rules hit industry

With 60 independent hotels currently under management (and another 40 expected before year’s end), as well as five Life House-branded hotels welcoming guests (and another two slated to open in 2022), the company is harnessing travel’s triumphant return to drive its ambitious agenda. I recently spoke with Zeidan to learn more about what makes Life House tick, and what the future holds for the company post-pandemic. His responses have been edited for length and clarity. Q: How would you explain Life House and its mission to someone who knows nothing about technology? A: Life House’s mission is to make travel more accessible and reliable for all types of travelers.
