Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In the weeks since Anthony Bourdain’s death, I felt compelled to watch episodes of his series Parts Unknown . In Season 3, Bourdain is in Lyon, France with celebrity chef Daniel Boulud. In one particular scene, we find Bourdain and Boulud in the kitchen devouring chicken when Bourdain utters the ominous line: “Even if I weren’t a chicken, I’d want to die like this. Die surrounded by truffles, foie gras and fine wine.” (Photo by Mike Pont/WireImage) Being Anthony Bourdain Bourdain’s death exposed his outsized influence, the kind that most leaders only dream of. Upon his passing, an overwhelming sorrow seemed to blanket the world. I learned of the affair from a friend’s text that morning: Omg Anthony Bourdain ??!!! Omg I can’t believe this I’m so devastated Omg I’m freaking out why are [you] not awake and responding to me” That was the first of many texts I received that day from … [Read more...] about The Authenticity Of Anthony Bourdain

Lies, Damn Lies, Payroll Data
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The big spike in the Payroll data (+517K) was out of kilter with what has been occurring in the rest of the economy and in other labor market data. Financial markets always shoot first and ask questions later, so, on Friday, equity markets fell and bond yields rose on the fear that the Fed would now have a great excuse to raise interest rates even further than what was already priced in. The far-right hand sides of the above charts show the violent up spikes in the yields of the 10-Yr. and 2-Yr. T-Notes on Friday (February 3). As reported by various reliable sources with deep research capabilities, most or all of the +517K job gains wasn’t due to new job creation, but to benchmark revisions, seasonal adjustments, and population controls , all keywords for what we can only describe as statistical magic . Morgan Stanley MS concluded that without the population adjustments, the Household Survey (which was up an even … [Read more...] about Lies, Damn Lies, Payroll Data
A Second Judge Blocks Illinois From Enforcing ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban
An Illinois judge placed a second temporary restraining order on a recently passed gun law that bans so-called assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. White County Resident Circuit Judge T. Scott Webb issued the temporary restraining order Thursday after plaintiffs alleged that the new law, HB 5471, violates the Illinois Constitution. Commonly known as the Protect Illinois Communities Act, the law outlawed the sale, manufacture, possession and purchase of “assault-style” weapons, assault weapon attachments and .50-caliber cartridges, while also limiting magazine capacity to 10 rounds for long guns and 15 rounds for handguns. “It is hereby ordered that a temporary restraining order is entered enjoining the Defendants from enforcing or attempting to enforce any and all provisions of Public Act 102-1116 against the named plaintiffs in this cause,” Webb wrote in the ruling. “The order is binding upon all parties to this action, including their agents, officers, employees and … [Read more...] about A Second Judge Blocks Illinois From Enforcing ‘Assault Weapons’ Ban
Bayern Munich End Bundesliga Results Crisis With 4-2 Win Over Wolfsburg
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On paper, Bayern Munich has ended its mini post-World Cup crisis. The Rekordmeister beat Mainz midweek 4-0 in the DFB Pokal and, more importantly, ended their three games in a row 1-1 draw series with a 4-2 victory over Wolfsburg. On the surface, the results crisis is over. But the triumph over Wolfsburg also showed plenty of shortcomings that a more effective opponent might have better explored. According to Bundesliga.com, Wolfsburg led the xG 2.71 to 0.68. Not surprisingly, Bayern head coach Julian Nagelsmann agreed that his side might have been a bit lucky on Sunday night. "The win was crucial,” Nagelsmann said to the media after the game. “We scored three goals from the first three chances, which made it easier for us.” Those three goals by Kingsley Coman (9’ and 14’) and Thomas Müller (19’) seemed to have killed the game off early, but a late first-half goal by Jakub Kaminski opened the door for Wolfsburg. … [Read more...] about Bayern Munich End Bundesliga Results Crisis With 4-2 Win Over Wolfsburg
Once Secretive Sriracha Factory Becomes California’s Hottest Tourist Attraction
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Although Sriracha, the explosively popular hot sauce, has become a foodie favorite over the last decade, its maker, Huy Fong Foods, Inc., remained shrouded in mystery. Until now. On Saturdays for the last month or so, up to 350 people per hour have donned hairnets for self-guided walking tours of Huy Fong's plant in Irwindale, Calif., about 30 minutes east of Los Angeles. By my mind, that makes it California's newest tourist attraction. Visitors watch up to 40 21-ton trucks' worth of jalapeño peppers, picked just hours earlier, being offloaded, washed, ground, mixed with other ingredients, bottled and crated before their very eyes. Like a Willy Wonka of hot sauce, Huy Fong's founder and CEO, David Tran, has been on hand to greet visitors and pose for photos. The tours take about 20 to 30 minutes and conclude with samples and, naturally, a gift shop. Vancouver’s Haywood Golf Debuts Woods Line
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Golf’s recent boom may feel like it’s approaching the 18 th hole and ready to recede but industry experts retain their bullish stance on the sport’s future. According to a recently published Infiniti Research report , the global market for golf clubs is forecast to grow by over $700 million from 2022-2027, increasing at a compound growth rate of 2.7% per annum. Haywood Golf , a Vancouver based clubmaker run by Joshua Haywood and his fiancée Haley Lloyd continues to ride the wave. Haywood undercuts the prices of the big OEMs by removing the middleman from the equation and going the direct-to-consumer route. They’ve carved out a niche in the marketplace by milling timeless looking premium clubs at a more affordable entry point. A seven-club set of their CB Irons, a cavity back design, go for $799. San Francisco 49ers Coaching Staff To Undergo Some Dramatic Changes
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The San Francisco 49ers are just over a week removed from a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. A lot of things have changed since kickoff from Philadelphia on Jan. 29. Rookie quarterback Brock Purdy was pretty much guaranteed to be the Week 1 starter in 2023 after an historic start to his career. The seventh-round pick then went down to an elbow injury on San Francisco’s first possession and will be out at least the next six months . Just a couple days after San Francisco lost to Philadelphia, defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans opted to accept the Houston Texans’ head coaching job, leaving a major hole for head coach Kyle Shanahan to fill. Ryans is a finalist for the NFL Assistant Coach of the Year award. He led the league’s top overall and scoring defense this past regular season. Not only is the loss of Ryans huge in a vacuum it will also undoubtedly lead to other departures from … [Read more...] about San Francisco 49ers Coaching Staff To Undergo Some Dramatic Changes

Hilary Swank And Her Nine-Year Overnight Success
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hilary Swank recently gave the commencement speech at Savannah College of Art and Design. She focused her speech on the fictitious idea of the overnight success. Having earned an Academy Award at the young age of 25, and a second one five years later, it would be easy to label Hilary Swank as an overnight success, as has been often portrayed in the press. She recounts her story to debunk this idea. SCAD Spring 2018 Commencement Courtesy of SCAD Swank had set out on the journey to be an actress almost eleven years earlier, when she was just 14 years old.
