Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of the great chefs and hunters of Tuscany, Omar Barsacchi of Osteria Magona , took a deep breath as his boisterous and playful demeanor melded into a peaceful calm. Presenting the final dish from a wonderful Tuscan wine lunch in the heart of Soho, in New York City, he spoke about a good friend and fellow chef who gave him the recipe for the exquisite apple tart that was beautifully enhanced by a cream made with a rare sweet wine that the great Super Tuscan producer Ornellaia makes in minuscule quantities. But then, when he stated with a grieving heart that his friend passed away last year, it became apparent that this final dish was a heartfelt pause to remember all those who have died in the past couple of years. One of the many fascinating things about New York City is that some of the most inconspicuous buildings usually have the most wondrous surprises behind their doors. Sometimes it can be an enchanting garden, a … [Read more...] about Famous Super Tuscan Wine Producer Brings Tuscany To New York City While Displaying Age-Worthy Quality Through Verticals

Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai
A leopard is seen walking across a ridge in Aarey colony near Sanjay Gandhi National Park overlooking Mumbai. Los Angeles and Mumbai share many superlatives as pinnacles of cinema, fashion, and traffic congestion. But another similarity lurks in the shadows, most often seen at night walking silently on four paws. These metropolises are the worlds only megacities of 10 million-plus where large felines mountain lions in one, leopards in the other thrive by breeding, hunting and maintaining territory within urban boundaries. Long-term studies in both cities have examined how the big cats prowl through their urban jungles, and how people can best live alongside them lessons that may be applicable to more places in coming decades. In the future, there's going to be more cities like this, as urban areas further encroach on natural habitats, said biologist Audra Huffmeyer, who studies mountain lions at the University of California, Los Angeles. If we want to keep these large … [Read more...] about Big cats in urban jungle: From mountain lions in Los Angeles to leopards in Mumbai
Colman Domingo, Charles Busch, films galore and more at Denver’s CinemaQ Film Festival
Colman Domingo was taking a break from a feature film shoot in upstate New York to talk about his life and career, and the upcoming CinemaQ Film Festival at Denver’s Sie FilmCenter, at which he will be given the inaugural LaBahn Ikon Film Award. His life, while not an open book, he has generously shared in the terrific solo play “A Boy and His Soul,” about growing up in Philadelphia to the sounds of his mother and stepfather’s soul music LP collection. Not long ago, he talked to GQ magazine about how he met his now-husband, Raul Domingo (nee Aktanov). (If you’re hankering for an authentic version of the cute rom-com meeting, look it up.) As for his career, the multi-hyphenate has already had a doozy of a ride. Well-known — and oft reviled — for his turn as Victor Strand in AMC’s zombie-apocalypse show, “Fear of the Walking Dead,” Domingo also played Ralph Abernathy in “Selma” and trombonist Cutler in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” He was a scene-stealer as X, a pimp in Janicza Bravo’s … [Read more...] about Colman Domingo, Charles Busch, films galore and more at Denver’s CinemaQ Film Festival
Special military cell flows weapons and equipment into Ukraine
The Russia-Ukraine war erupted on February 24, 2022 (AP file photo) It takes a village to help Ukraine fight the Russians. Consider a recent shipment of 105-millimeter howitzers. Britain donated the weapons, and New Zealand trained Ukrainian soldiers how to use them and provided spare parts. The United States supplied the ammunition and the vehicles to tow them and flew the load to a base near Ukraine’s border. Choreographing the sequence was the job of dozens of military logistics specialists ensconced in a large, secure attic room at the U.S. European Command headquarters in Germany. The little-known group is playing a pivotal role in keeping the Ukrainian military armed and equipped as its battlefield needs become more complicated. Think of the cell as a cross between a wedding registry for bombs, bullets and rocket artillery, and a military version of FedEx. Uniformed officers from more than two dozen countries try to match Ukraine’s requests with donations from more … [Read more...] about Special military cell flows weapons and equipment into Ukraine
How Enamul Haque smuggled cattle by the thousands into Bangladesh for years
The first bovine Enamul Haque smuggled to Bangladesh was a calf. In the summer of 1994 he carried the animal in his arms and walked across the border into a village in Bangladesh in broad daylight. A frail figure then, Haque was not checked or stopped by anyone, earned Rs 3,000 and did not share the spoils. It was his first income, a cent per cent profit — he had stolen the calf from an Indian village. Haque was testing the waters, he had heard from his neighbours how cow smuggling was lucrative and buyers wanted more supplies. This was a new business; Haque had started his career as a rider of fake currency and gold bars. He picked up bundles of fake Indian currency and gold bars from Bangladeshi smugglers and handed them over to passengers from Murshidabad heading for Kolkata. This continued for a decade, and around 2004, Haque slowly shifted to cattle smuggling. He had observed the trade up close and groomed himself by mingling with cow smugglers. The ones in the trade … [Read more...] about How Enamul Haque smuggled cattle by the thousands into Bangladesh for years

Apple TV+ counts its ‘Luck’ as fallen ‘Toy Story’ exec makes comeback
U.S. actress Eva Noblezada, U.S. actress Adelynn Spoon, U.S. actor John Ratzenberger, and Irish actor Colin O’Donoghue attend the Apple TV+ Global premiere of “Luck” at the Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on July 30, 2022. Image: AFP/Lisa O’Connor Like all good animated family movies, “Luck” has a thoroughly optimistic premise: that no matter how hopeless or dire your circumstances may seem, something good will eventually come of it. Apple TV+ will be hoping the same is true for John Lasseter, the former Pixar guru who resigned under a cloud of #MeToo harassment claims, and later became head of the new Skydance Animation. “Luck” is that studio’s first film, available to stream Friday, which follows 18-year-old girl Sam and a talking black cat called Bob on their adventures in the fantastical Land of Luck. Editors Daily Rundown: Another Inflation Explosion
ANOTHER INFLATION EXPLOSION… CNBC: Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected, as price pressures intensify Shoppers paid sharply higher prices for a variety of goods in June as inflation kept its hold on a slowing U.S. economy, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Wednesday. The consumer price index, a broad measure of everyday goods and services, soared 9.1% from a year ago, above the 8.8% Dow Jones estimate. That marked another month of the fastest pace for inflation going back to December 1981. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core CPI increased 5.9%, compared to the 5.7% estimate. On a monthly basis, headline CPI rose 1.3% and core CPI was up 0.7%, compared to respective estimates of 1.1% and 0.5%. Taken together, the numbers seemed to counter the narrative that inflation may be peaking, as the gains were based across a variety of categories. Where the Cobbled Path Leads book review: A rich addition to the expanding world of writings from Nagaland
Dzükou Valley Trek, Kohima, Nagaland. Avinuo Kire's latest novel melds folk fantasy with present-day lived reality. (Representational image: Varun Nambiar via Unsplash) Pegged as a folk fantasy novel interweaving fantasy fiction with Naga spirit stories and folklore, Avinuo Kire’s latest novel Where the Cobbled Path Leads is a cleverly crafted work. For, apart from the fantasy and folk elements, Where the Cobbled Path Leads is also about the close-knit kinship in Naga society, the way people live in shared intimacy and being attuned as one with nature. The narrative includes all things familiar to readers of literary fiction by most authors from Nagaland: the oral story of spirits dwelling in animals and humans, passing references to military occupation by the Japanese forces during the Second World War and its after-effects in present-day Nagaland, the shift from indigenous practices to Christianity and the politics behind the Naga freedom movement. This means that … [Read more...] about Where the Cobbled Path Leads book review: A rich addition to the expanding world of writings from Nagaland
