G7 launches Climate Club in attempt to avoid green trade wars

June 28, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A BERLIN/BRUSSELS (June 28): Leaders of the world's most advanced economies have agreed to start a Climate Club in which members agree on joint rules and standards in the fight against global warming with the hope that it will avoid spats over green tariffs. The Group of Seven (G7) nations reached a deal on the issue at a three-day summit in Bavaria, Germany that ended on Tuesday. It is a significant achievement for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has made better coordination on climate protection measures a key theme of his G7 presidency. "We note with concern that currently neither global climate ambition nor implementation is sufficient to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement," the final G7 leaders said in a statement. The Climate Club will address that by "accelerating climate action and increasing ambition, with a particular focus on the industry sector". Scholz has argued that the Climate Club would help eliminate a chaotic patchwork of national … [Read more...] about G7 launches Climate Club in attempt to avoid green trade wars

What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession

June 27, 2022 by www.investopedia.com

If you're looking for capitulation in 2022, it's in the bond market. And that tells you that investors' confidence in the global economy is very low. Inside the stock market, it's all about defense. Defensive stocks, which include big healthcare companies and dividend-paying value stocks, have been driving the gains. An index of global defensive stocks put together by Goldman Sachs, which is heavy in healthcare giants, has climbed to more than an 18-month high relative to the MSCI AC World Index. Inside the U.S., the defensive ETF ticker DEF has been outperforming the Spider ETF SPY all last week and all year. For market watchers, this feels a whole lot like a recession trade. While investors in the capital markets are battening the hatches for a recession, money in the private markets is also drying up. The value of venture capital deals in the U.S. dropped more than 25% in the second quarter to just $1 trillion, according to Dealogic . M&A activity in the United States … [Read more...] about What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession

Recruiting The Best – Transparency Trumps Theatrics

June 28, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Across all levels and industries, recruiting the best talent remains a challenge in the current market. Tempting new employees while retaining your existing staff and keeping staffing levels high is ever-challenging. At the start of the pandemic, the quick reduction in workforce demand laid bare the fundamentals of the company and employee relationship. The subsequent quick market flip for talent put the power of choice very much at the heart of the employee. With the dynamic of the working environment changing and prospective hires being able to choose when and how they work, companies suddenly had to review every aspect of their business to compete - from mentorship and facetime policies to compensation and benefits - all these softer aspects of work have been turned on their head. Many companies are now trying different tactics to attract new talent with limited success. The most obvious of these are to increase starting … [Read more...] about Recruiting The Best – Transparency Trumps Theatrics

Surprise: The Hiring Manager Is More Anxious Than The Job Seeker

June 28, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Here is a hack that will make you feel more confident in your job search: the interviewer and hiring managers are more nervous than you are. It’s hard to wrap your mind around this concept, as people are indoctrinated to think that job seekers should be the ones who are nervous and anxious going into an interview. They worry about being judged. Job hunters must contend with the shame of not moving onto the next level in the interview process. Even worse, they don’t receive feedback and get ghosted. The hiring process feels—to the job seeker—like the company, human resources, management and internal talent acquisition professionals hold all of the power. What Hiring Managers Obsessively Worry About A supervisor needs to hire. They want to make sure that the applicant possesses all of the requirements listed in the job description. The interviewer also wants to feel that they can click with the candidate and forge a … [Read more...] about Surprise: The Hiring Manager Is More Anxious Than The Job Seeker

Why You Need To Look At Software Outsourcing Like Building A House

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin David is the Co-Founder of Aloa , a platform for outsourcing software development. Aloa has helped 200+ startups/companies build their tech. Software outsourcing is an inherently complicated space, where even highly technical individuals face pain points. In this article, I’ll create a simplified guide by walking through three main concepts that will help you understand what you need to know to kick off your software outsourcing journey. 1. The Analogy “Software development is like building a house.” Let’s look at some of the basic challenges of software development with this analogy in mind. Third-Party Limits: Your house doesn’t control your Wi-Fi signal; your internet provider does. The contractor who built your house is not responsible when you have an issue with your connectivity. With software development, you will have to rely on numerous third parties. Your devs will help implement them, but … [Read more...] about Why You Need To Look At Software Outsourcing Like Building A House

Covid-19 During Pregnancy: Increased Risk Of Preterm Delivery And Infant Neurodevelopmental Issues

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin During pregnancy, a mother’s body suppresses parts of the immune system to help tolerate the growing fetus. This means pregnant women are at an especially high risk of contracting disease, including Covid-19. The risk they face is two-fold: first, towards their own health, and second, towards the health of their unborn child. Still, not much is known about the impacts of SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy. In a previous article , I summarized some of the key findings thus far. Since then, two new studies have been published, offering additional insights into the dangers of Covid-19 exposure during pregnancy. The first findings come from researchers at the University College London. Their work suggests that mothers who catch Covid-19 during their first trimester are more likely to have an early miscarriage. The second study , led by a group at Harvard Medical School, found that infants born to mothers who had Covid-19 … [Read more...] about Covid-19 During Pregnancy: Increased Risk Of Preterm Delivery And Infant Neurodevelopmental Issues

The number of Netflix bulls is dwindling

June 28, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A CHICAGO (June 28): In a year that has seen widespread selling of technology stocks and long-time market leaders fall into bear territory, the woes of Netflix Inc stand alone. The video-streaming company has plummeted 69% this year, abandoned by both investors and analysts as back-to-back disappointing quarterly reports raised concerns about user trends in an industry that’s becoming more competitive and losing its pandemic-related tailwinds. The drop is the most of any Nasdaq 100 or S&P 500 component, and much worse than the former index’s 26% decline. The growth outlook has weakened to the point that Netflix has cut hundreds of jobs and changed its tune on two longstanding principles: it is cracking down on password sharing, and will introduce an ad-based subscriber tier to the platform. That’s on top of a backdrop where high inflation has pushed the Federal Reserve to hike rates sharply, sparking recession fuels and fueling a rotation out of tech. … [Read more...] about The number of Netflix bulls is dwindling

How ‘new collar workers’ can help companies push past the Great Resignation

June 27, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

The past two years have seen more than a tenth of Americans move from low-paying labor jobs to positions in tech. Dubbed as “new collar workers,” many of these people used recent lockdowns to learn new skills that have helped them find higher salary roles with greater flexibility. This workforce of people from non-conventional backgrounds can bridge the tech talent shortage, but only if companies can adapt their recruitment processes accordingly. advertisement advertisement Players like Google, Apple, and IBM have taken the step of dropping college degree requirements to attract new collar workers, but bringing on board new workers requires more than eliminating formal education requisites. Even before the pandemic, nearly one third of developers considered themselves self-taught, meaning the relevance of the college degree had already slipped. With the tech industry adding 12,300 jobs from February to March this year, … [Read more...] about How ‘new collar workers’ can help companies push past the Great Resignation

MASKED CELEBRATIONS Thousands of devotees turned up at a Mass in Tondo, Manila, during the Feast of the Sto. Niño (Child Jesus) on Jan. 17 this year, wearing masks and face shields. —MARIANNE BERMUDEZ MANILA, Philippines — Christianity was introduced to the Philippines 500 years ago, the faithful have found ways to weave the Filipino culture into their expression of faith, particularly through religious festivals or fiesta — joyous occasions that fill communities with color, hope and a sense of unity. “Although Christianity — the prayers, rituals and devotions — comes from Europe, the past 500 years have shown that the Filipino people have not only embraced Christianity; we have given it a ‘Filipino flavor,’” said former Manila Archbishop Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. In “Fiesta: Ang Makulay na Pananampalatayang Pilipino,” a documentary film produced by Jesuit Communications to commemorate the 500 years of Christianity in the country, some Filipino festivals and traditions are … [Read more...] about Fiestas survive pandemic albeit on socially distanced, masked or virtual scale
