Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Despite ongoing silent runs on the Regional and Community Banks, it appears that both Fed Chair Powell and Treasury Secretary Yellen view the events of the recent past (SVB VB , Signature Bank, First Republic, Credit Suisse, and now Deutsche Bank) as one-off events and not symptomatic of stress in the world’s financial system. The dictionary defines “obtuse” as “annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand.” We can’t think of anything more precise! The chart at the top shows the continued decline in the value of S&P’s Regional Banking ETF through the close of business on Friday (March 24 th ). On Wednesday, the Fed raised interest rates 25 basis points despite liquidity issues in the banking system and the apparent loss of confidence in that system by a significant portion of the public. During his press conference, Powell acknowledged some FOMC concerns over banking issues, said that they had considered a "pause,” … [Read more...] about Obtuse: The Fed & Treasury View Of Banking Issues

By using the bones of old buildings, this company lowers the carbon footprint of skyscraper construction
3XN is No. 32 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Last year, the Sydney skyline got a strikingly modern addition: a 49-story office tower, built from a decades-old structure. The Quay Quarter Tower , in the city’s historic Circular Quay, stands on the site of a 1976 skyscraper that Danish architecture firm 3XN repurposed to create the new building. More akin to a face-lift than a birth, this kind of large-scale structural reuse has clear environmental advantages. By incorporating 65% of the original building’s floor plates and 95% of its concrete elevator shafts and stairwells into the new tower, 3XN reduced the overall material needs of the project. That slashed the so-called embodied carbon emissions that would have resulted from creating new concrete and steel for construction. The architects estimate that this approach saved 13,000 tons of embodied … [Read more...] about By using the bones of old buildings, this company lowers the carbon footprint of skyscraper construction
This startup is reviving American manufacturing with robots as a service
Formic is No. 39 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Formic ’s insight about automation comes from a very human observation: Many of the business owners who could benefit from robots don’t have the time to research their options because they’re maxed out dealing with their humans. “What I realized was that 99% of places that need robots don’t have robots,” says CEO Saman Farid. “The vast majority of manufacturers in America are these SMBs,” he says of his small- and medium-size business customers. “All of these people have very little automation but are extremely short-staffed.” That results in expensive downtime for factory equipment: “They have to pay for all the time where everything’s just sitting around.” Formic’s solution offers robots-as-a-service. The Chicago-based company, founded in 2020, formally launched in August 2021; and now past its 50th … [Read more...] about This startup is reviving American manufacturing with robots as a service

How Loom became TikTok for enterprises
Loom is No. 45 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Video communication has become de rigueur since the pandemic, but rather than just moving a meeting from a conference room to a screen, Loom does something different. It takes the short-form video phenomenon and turns it into an effective way for businesses to pitch clients, explain how a product works, or share information internally. Think of it like TikTok for enterprises. By allowing customers to create short videos (up to five minutes long) that can be watched anytime and shared as needed, the eight-year-old company helps its 18 million users across 350,000 businesses eschew time-sucking scheduled video meetings, both internally and externally. Those clients—which include Netflix, HubSpot, and P&G’s Tide brand—have been using it a lot. As of December, more than 215 million “looms” had been … [Read more...] about How Loom became TikTok for enterprises
US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Refilling the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve may take years, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week, reversing plans the Biden administration announced late last year to repurchase at lower prices oil it sold from the reserve in 2022. However, the relatively limited size of the planned repurchases in proportion to global oil demand makes assessing the impact on U.S. crude oil markets somewhat difficult—especially amid current global economic trends and geopolitical challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week it may take years for the government to replenish its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It's a reversal of plans the government announced last year to repurchase oil it sold from the reserve at lower prices. Current global economic concerns and geopolitical conditions, however, present challenges in assessing the market impact of the decision. Granholm told a House panel Thursday that the U.S. likely would not … [Read more...] about US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Handyman Who Allegedly Had Affair With Brutally Slain Woman Charged With Murder
Police officers arrested David Bonola, 44, Wednesday and charged him for the brutal slaying of his alleged lover, Orsolya Gaal, who was stabbed upwards of 55 times, according to authorities. NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig confirmed Bonola was hired as Orsolya’s handyman and said the two were entangled in an affair for roughly two years prior to the brutal murder, according to video of the police press conference , released by Fox 5 . Police charged Bonola with “murder in the 2nd degree, criminal tampering in the 1st degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the 4th degree,” according to Essig. While canvassing for video as part of their investigation into Orsolya’s murder, police “observed the male that was wanted for questioning,” according to Essig. Review: Trettitre TreSound1 Wireless Speaker
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There is no shortage of cheap Bluetooth speakers from manufacturers that you’d never see on store shelves in North America, but far fewer that make a play for the high end wireless speaker market. It’s difficult to get consumers to part with big money on a speaker that doesn’t carry a familiar name. China’s Trettitre is giving it a go with the $699.99 TreSound1, a sample of which was sent to me by distributor Linsoul Audio . Premium – But Polarizing – Design The TreSound1 has a very unusual appearance, one that draws immediate attention. Trettitre says it incorporates a “mountain” design. To me it looks like a warhead. It’s not just the form factor that makes the design polarizing; the controls take minimalism to an extreme. There are no buttons to mar its surface. On/off and volume control is accomplished by twisting the metal end of the cone, with no option for pausing or skipping tracks. The very tip is an LED that … [Read more...] about Review: Trettitre TreSound1 Wireless Speaker
