Coronavirus Could Be A $12 Billion Hit To Entertainment And Audiences May Never Be The Same

March 18, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin They’re all closed. Movie Theaters. Bars. Nightclubs. Arenas. Cafes. In New York, Broadway and museums are shuttered. In San Francisco it’s even more dire. Across the country and the world, cities are shutting down, leaving humans from Seattle to Shanghai without traditional ways of finding distraction. The mandate for social distancing that has proven essential at slowing the spread of the coronavirus will cut about $12 billion of entertainment revenue from the U.S. if the shutdown lasts until July, as President Trump signaled . Billions more are not being spent on creating new content as film and television production is frozen. Things could get a lot worse. “ This is definitely unprecedented and turning everyone's lives completely upside down,” says Ryan Borba, managing editor at concert tracker Pollstar. The concert and live event industry brought in $34 billion last year, according to … [Read more...] about Coronavirus Could Be A $12 Billion Hit To Entertainment And Audiences May Never Be The Same

Reflections on Marcos’ 1st 6 months

February 5, 2023 by business.inquirer.net

ILLUSTRATION BY ALBERT RODRIGUEZ It’s been six months since President Marcos was sworn into office. If we liken Mr. Marcos’ six-year term to the well-loved game of basketball, we are now in the second half of the first of six games. The first half of Game 1 was filled with many challenges. A Pulse Asia survey last September 2022 showed that the top concerns of Filipinos are controlling inflation, increasing the pay of workers and creating more jobs. Unfortunately, these continue to burden Filipinos into halftime of Game 1. Before the first “game” ends on June 30, 2023, we’d like to share some of the administration’s notable wins during its first six months and some reflections on how to sustain the fight against these challenges. Wins First among Mr. Marcos’ wins is the appointment of credible and experienced economic managers. This means that we have a strong team to overcome the pandemic’s lingering effects on the economy. Second, several executive actions were made … [Read more...] about Reflections on Marcos’ 1st 6 months

Elon Musk Will Share Revenue With Twitter ‘Creators,’ If They Pay Him

February 4, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There is one idea that Elon Musk has for Twitter that on the surface, actually sounds pretty good. He subscribes to the notion that Twitter users are “creators” for the site, and like places like Twitch and YouTube, the company should share some portion of the revenue they’re helping to generate. Of course, in practice, the implementation of how he says he’s going to do this sounds…terrible. Yesterday, Elon Musk announced that “starting today,” creators would be able to share in the revenue generated from the newly-inserted ads in reply threads. By the end of the day, there was no indication that program had actually gone live, and there were no further details about what kind of revenue split there would and who was eligible, other than one point of clarity: This would only apply to Twitter Blue members. So, in effect, what Elon Musk is saying is that if you pay him $8-11 a month for Blue, or at minimum … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Will Share Revenue With Twitter ‘Creators,’ If They Pay Him

Microsoft Microsoft Corp on Wednesday rolled out a premium Teams messaging offering powered by ChatGPT to simplify meetings using the AI chatbot that has taken Silicon Valley by a storm. The premium service will cost $7 per month in June before increasing to $10 in July, Microsoft said. OpenAI-owned ChatGPT will generate automatic meeting notes, recommend tasks and help create meeting templates for Teams users. Microsoft, which announced a multi-billion dollar investment in OpenAI earlier this month, has said it aims to add ChatGPT's technology into all its products, setting the stage for more competition with rival Alphabet Inc's Google. The chatbot, which can produce prose or poetry on command, is at the forefront of generative AI, a space where more and more big tech companies are funneling their resources in. How climate change is helping invasive species thrive in India’s waterbodies

October 16, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

Arapaima are now found in Kerala (Photo: Jeff Kubina via Wikimedia Commons) Think about it. The origin story of the brown trout in India dates back to just over 100 years. It was introduced to the cold waters of the Kashmir Valley by the British . The fish has since flourished in the erstwhile state.  It has also snagged a spot on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN’s) 100 of the world's worst invasive alien species (IAS) and emerged as one of the biggest threats to the indigenous snow trout and 150 other native fish species found in the Himalayan waters. An internal study by the Wildlife Institute of India pins the blame on climate change. “This particular breed inhabits cold waters, but rising temperatures are pushing native fish species northwards, leading to a conflict with the brown trout. It is a conflict that the brown trout will dominate,” says Arjun Singh, who has been working towards the conservation of the snow trout in the Kashmir region for … [Read more...] about How climate change is helping invasive species thrive in India’s waterbodies
