VDI centralized the delivery and management of Windows desktops and apps from data center servers, providing anywhere access over a LAN or internet connection. It improved security while supporting a workforce that worked largely within reasonable proximity of an enterprise-operated data center. However, VDI was time-consuming, capital-intensive, complex and hard to scale. With the introduction of Cloud PCs—an enterprise desktop experience delivered from the cloud—it's now possible to modernize legacy VDI. VDI Has Run Its Course Over the last few years, increased security threats, the mainstreaming of hybrid work and a more globally distributed workforce have driven a … [Read more...] about The Cloud PC Is The New Road To Virtual Desktops

Why Amazon’s “dead grandma” Alexa is just the beginning for voice cloning
Earlier this summer, at the re:MARS conference—an Amazon-hosted event focusing on machine learning, automation, robotics, and space—Rohit Prasad, head scientist and vice president of Alexa A.I., aimed to wow the audience with a paranormal parlor trick: speaking with the dead. “While A.I. can’t eliminate that pain of loss, it can definitely make their memories last,” he said, before showing a short video that starts with an adorable boy asking Alexa , “Can Grandma finish reading me The Wizard of Oz ?” advertisement advertisement The woman’s voice that reads a few sentences from the book sounds grandmother-y enough. But without knowing Grandma, it was impossible to evaluate the likeness. And the whole thing struck many observers as more than a little creepy—Ars Technica called the demo “morbid.” But Prasad’s revelation of how the “trick” was performed was truly gasp-worthy: Amazon scientists were able to summon Grandma’s voice based on just a … [Read more...] about Why Amazon’s “dead grandma” Alexa is just the beginning for voice cloning

The US-led drive to isolate Russia, China falls short
Viktor Vekselberg (Photo by Andrey Rudakov/Bloomberg) - A + A The soft power tussle was on show in Africa last month, when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov won praise for Moscow’s nuclear power technology BERLIN/HONG KONG/JOHANNESBURG (Aug 8): When Group of Seven leaders gathered in the Bavarian Alps in June, they pledged to stand with Ukraine for the long haul. Their Group of 20 counterparts are proving less supportive. Comprising nations that account for some 85% of global economic output, the G-20 is supposed to be more reflective of the world. Yet only half its number has joined the international sanctions imposed on fellow member Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Senior officials from the smaller group of wealthy nations have been traveling the world to make the case for a tougher economic net around Russia. Jack Ma Is Criticized For Endorsing 12-Hour Days, Six Days A Week — But He’s Right About One Thing
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin (AP Photo/Susan Walsh, File) Jack Ma, the billionaire founder of Alibaba, has come under fire for his views on the controversial practice known as "996." This number refers to Ma’s belief that everyone in his company should happily work from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., six days a week. From his earliest days in the late '90s, Ma preached to a small scrappy group of employees that they must emulate the “hard-working spirit of Silicon Valley” to compete against them. “If we go to work at 8 a.m. and go home at 5 p.m., this is not a high-tech company.” His message is the same today: "I personally think that 996 is a huge blessing," he said. "How do you achieve the success you want without paying extra effort and time?" Ma added that the real 996 is not overtime work. He declared that everyone does have the right to choose. However, that option may be frowned upon in the eyes of management. He chastises those who … [Read more...] about Jack Ma Is Criticized For Endorsing 12-Hour Days, Six Days A Week — But He’s Right About One Thing
