WASHINGTON — Stacey Abrams plans to call the recent government shutdown a "stunt engineered by the President of the United States" in the official Democratic response to follow President Donald Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday night. "The shutdown was a stunt engineered by the President of the United States, one that defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people — but our values," Abrams, the first black woman to deliver the State of the Union response, was to say according to remarks released in advance. Abrams, 45, the former Democratic leader of the Georgia House, became the first black woman in the country to win a major party nomination for governor in the 2018 midterm elections. Although she ultimately lost, she won more votes than any other Georgia Democrat in a statewide election. Pelosi has insisted that the annual address to a joint session of Congress be postponed until the partial government shutdown is resolved. The speaker of the House can prevent Congress from entering a joint session, increasing the likelihood that Trump will not get to deliver his speech on Tuesday. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said on Variety’s “Playback” podcast on Thursday that he could be approved to develop projects for Fox’s Marvel characters in the next six months. The Disney-Fox merger is expected to close in early 2019 and the combination will give Disney access to Fox’s film rights to Marvel characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. Disney’s acquisition of Fox is expected to close in early 2019. Once the merger is finalised, Disney’s Marvel Studios will have access to Marvel characters that Fox owns the film rights to, such as the X-Men, Deadpool, and Fantastic Four.
