The clever way strapped transit agencies are saving cash

· February 25, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement Lot 9 at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport is an ocean of asphalt, typically occupied by thousands of parked cars. Soon it will be covered with 16 acres worth of solar panels, generating enough electricity to power the AirTrain that links the nearby subway station to the airport’s terminals, while also meeting the electricity needs of hundreds of homes in the surrounding neighborhood. advertisement advertisement Like a more central version of the vast solar arrays that get built on empty fields in the hinterlands, it’s a relatively new kind of solar power project that brings the generation and storage of solar energy right where it’s needed most. SunPower , a solar energy company. It’s one of several projects SunPower is building on sites owned by transportation agencies around the country, including the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority and the Delaware … [Read more...] about The clever way strapped transit agencies are saving cash

The U.S. plans to release all the COVID-19 vaccines. Experts are worried

· January 13, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement This week, the Trump administration announced that it would release all the available COVID-19 vaccines from its stockpile to ensure more people over the age of 65 can get a shot. The move followed President-elect Joe Biden’s declaration last week that he would release all the existing doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in order to get more people vaccinated faster. Both plans raise lots of questions for health researchers and public health experts. advertisement advertisement The two COVID-19 vaccines available in the U.S.—from Pfizer and Moderna—each require two doses to be effective. So far, doctors and nurses have been holding back one dose of the vaccine for every dose they administer in order to ensure that there is an available dose on hand when people come in for their second inoculation. However, some public health experts have suggested that all available vaccines should be … [Read more...] about The U.S. plans to release all the COVID-19 vaccines. Experts are worried

The best internet memes about Ted Cruz fleeing Texas for Cancun

· February 18, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement It’s never a good sign when a Senator uses the shrug emoji in a tweet about dropping the ball in a disaster. advertisement advertisement Yet this clumsy attempt at a mea culpa from Texas’s chief culture warrior, Ted Cruz, proved merely an amuse bouche for the hearty meal of his botched response to the power blackouts in his state this week. Fresh off telling Texans to “stay home” earlier in the week, Cruz has apparently fled Texas for the tropical confines of Cancun. It’s not the senator’s first run in with hypocrisy during this crisis. Internet denizens with long memories reaching all the way back to summer 2020 resurfaced some of Cruz’s tweets mocking California politicians for allowing power outages to happen on their watch . Later, journalist Katy Tur asked Cruz to reconcile his recent request for federal aid after voting against relief for blue-state Hurricane Sandy … [Read more...] about The best internet memes about Ted Cruz fleeing Texas for Cancun

What’s really at stake in Apple and Facebook’s war over user tracking

· February 19, 2021 ·

advertisement advertisement advertisement While the PR and media layer of Apple’s dispute with Facebook over user tracking by apps may still be going, at a strategic level the drama’s pretty much over, and it’s looking like Apple won. advertisement advertisement In a nutshell, Apple will soon require apps that want to track user’s movements within other companies’ apps or websites to get explicit permission to do so from the user. Facebook’s apps have long done this without such explicit permission. When the new feature, which Apple calls App Tracking Transparency , was announced earlier this year, Facebook complained loudly that the loss of tracking data will hurt Facebook—and will hurt small businesses more by reducing Facebook’s ability to carefully target ads for them. Apple said it has a responsibility to its users to give them transparency and choice over the way their personal data is used. Neither of those statements … [Read more...] about What’s really at stake in Apple and Facebook’s war over user tracking
