In Dobbs v. Jackson, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, the half-century-old precedent that guaranteed federal abortion protections. After the controversial June decision, the matter was kicked back to the states, leading to a tangle of laws. It’s an ever-evolving landscape. Cost varies. Abortions are less expensive in the first trimester than later in the pregnancy. According to Planned Parenthood, the procedure can cost up to $750 in the first trimester, though it’s often less, and that amount climbs up to $1,500 later in the pregnancy. According to the latest available data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Abortion Surveillance System, the vast majority of abortions happen in the first trimester, with 92.7% occurring at or before 13 weeks of gestation, which is the beginning of the second trimester. However, as discussed below, advocates say that sending the matter to the states has increased costs in some circumstances, potentially putting … [Read more...] about How To Pay for and Access a Legal Abortion

Walmart, Walgreens, CVS ordered to pay $650.6M in US opioid case
A federal judge ordered Walmart, Walgreens and CVS on Wednesday to pay $650.6 million to two Ohio counties plagued by the US opioid crisis. The penalties will account for the companies’ “roles in failing to control the spread of deadly and addictive prescription opioids,” said plaintiffs’ lawyers at the Lanier Law Firm. “The award will allow Lake and Trumbull counties to fund education and prevention programs and reimburse local agencies and organizations for costs incurred to manage the crisis.” More than 500 opioid overdose deaths in the two counties between 2015 and 2019 “could be directly or indirectly linked” to prescription opioids or prescription painkillers, the Lanier firm said, citing testimony presented during the litigation. The order from US District Judge Dan Polster follows a November 2021 jury verdict against the same companies that found the three acted illegally in creating an “oversupply” of the drugs. The case had been the first instance in which … [Read more...] about Walmart, Walgreens, CVS ordered to pay $650.6M in US opioid case

5 Tips to Fund Your Company Without Asking Family or Friends for Money
If you're in the process of bootstrapping a company, chances are you've read content online on how to do it. In nearly every piece of content on bootstrapping, it's recommended that the business owner ask friends and family for money in the beginning. While this is certainly not intended to be exclusive, it does alienate entrepreneurs who may not have access to such resources. For the people out there who don't have wealthy relatives or friends, here are some alternatives to consider. 1. Keep your day job and save up. "I would get a job, 9 to 5, that pays you the most but that you have to do the least. And then I would build your business in the two hours during work because you can do that, and then from 6PM to 3AM in the morning. Do that until your business provides you enough revenue where you can just work on your own thing." -Gary Vaynerchuk on the topic. If you aren't fortunate enough to secure outside funding for your business, keeping your day job … [Read more...] about 5 Tips to Fund Your Company Without Asking Family or Friends for Money
Biden DOJ Takes A Big Bite Out Of Big Meat With Eight-Figure Legal Settlement
Three major US poultry producers will pay over $84 million dollars to settle a suit filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) which alleged the group shared payroll information to collaboratively lower costs, according to a Monday press release by the DOJ. The lawsuit alleged that Cargill Meat Solutions, Sanderson Farms, and Wayne Farms collaborated with one another by sharing information about employee wages and benefits, according to the complaint filed by the DOJ. The data consulting firm Webber, Meng, Sahl and Company (WMS) is alleged to have acted as a go-between, sharing this information amongst the defendants via a series of “surveys” that shared identifiable information, according to the complaint. The lawsuit was both filed and settled on Monday, with no defendant admitting any wrongdoing, according to The Wall Street Journal . “Through a brazen scheme to exchange wage and benefit information, these poultry processors stifled competition and harmed a generation of … [Read more...] about Biden DOJ Takes A Big Bite Out Of Big Meat With Eight-Figure Legal Settlement

Can You Have a Pension and a 401(k)?
You can have a pension and still contribute to a 401(k)—and an IRA—to take charge of your retirement. If you have a defined benefit pension plan at work, you have nothing to worry about, right? Maybe not. While pensions used to be a staple ingredient in the recipe of retirement planning, fewer companies today offer them. What's more, the benefits aren't as reliable as they used to be . Now is a good time to start thinking about where your pension fits into your overall plan for retirement. It’s dangerous to rely on any pension—even a generous one—to cover all your retirement needs. Key Takeaways A pension provides a fixed monthly benefit upon retirement for the rest of your life. 401(k)s and IRAs provide income in retirement, too. But the amount depends on how much you contribute and how well your investments perform. A good retirement strategy is to contribute to a variety of retirement investments, including 401(k)s and IRAs—even if you already have a pension. … [Read more...] about Can You Have a Pension and a 401(k)?

His hedge fund Third Point LLC in 2020 call ed on the company to suspend its dividend and go all-in on streaming. Days later, the company announced it was betting big on growing its trio of streaming services, Disney +, the sports-focused ESPN + and adult-focused Hulu. Just two years later, Disney surpassed streaming pioneer Netflix Inc in total subscriptions. Now, after a brief hiatus, Loeb is back and investing $1 billion in Disney , emboldened by making the right call on streaming.
